Bf 110 Zerstorer

  • As the world transitioned from biplane to monoplane, many new developments propelled aviation forward, and Hermann Göring himself fantasized with the idea of a fleet of brand new Zerstörers, or destroyers, that could take over the enemies of the Reich.
    A revolutionary aircraft concept was then born in the form of a heavy fighter destroyer, a vehicle that was compared to an impenetrable fortress back in the day.
    The Messerschmitt Bf 110 came out victorious after a hard-fought competition, primarily because of its long-range and stout airframe capable of penetrating the opponents' air defenses and protecting bombers along the way.
    However, its design also showed several shortcomings, and it is rumored that it ultimately won because of a petty fight between aviation leaders and the desire to embarrass Messerschmitt.
    Still, this powerful destroyer would eventually become one of the most emblematic aircraft out of Nazi Germany, and it would take the Royal Air Force almost a year to figure out the secret weapon behind an aircraft that was shooting down all of its tail gunners...

    I'm overlooking the Royal Navy slip up at the end!! Glad you mentioned Goering's love of this aircraft, it's one of many baffling decisions that probably contributed to the Nazis downfall. It did find it's niche as a night fighter though, that large cockpit had plenty of room for the radar operator and cannons plus the 110 was basically unopposed at night immediately overcoming it's weakness against single engined fighters. And yet the P-38 Lightning was an excellent twin engine fighter. And let us not forgot that wonderful wooden wonder the British Mosquito! Two engines and was an excellent air plane. But yeah the BF110 had a very short lived glory days.

    • @gort8203
      @gort8203 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yes, because the P-38 implemented the concept correctly as a single seat heavy fighter. If it had a long greenhouse and a tail gunner it probably would have been a failure as a fighter.

    • @uberduberdave
      @uberduberdave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gort8203 You're quite correct. At the end of WWI, two place fighters were among the best for their ability to cover rear attacks with a gunner. By WWII, speeds had doubled and G loading was fierce. Adding gunner positions to Axis fighters made them overweight and nearly useless. The 110, 210, 410, Breda 88 and Japanese twin engine fighters all became targets for Allied fighters.

    • @TyroneSayWTF
      @TyroneSayWTF 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The P-38 was actually the *ONLY* twin-prop heavy fighter (originally designed as a high-altitude bomber interceptor) during WW II that could actually effectively compete against enemy single-engine fighters without being at a *huge* disadvantage during aerial combat (because of their size and weight, all heavy fighters would naturally be at disadvantage against lighter more agile single-engine designs). Its (the P-38) combat record in all theaters of war was nearly 3800 enemy planes in total shot down - well more than half being enemy single-engine fighters.

    • @Alte.Kameraden
      @Alte.Kameraden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      P38 didn't perform much better than the Bf110. As an interceptor and escort it performed quite poorly. The Luftwaffe considered the P38 to be the easiest allied fighter to shoot down when it was in service in Europe. In it's nickname The Fork Tailed Devil was entirely allied Propaganda. The Germans called it Double Tail.
      The P38 thrived in the Pacific however, but it struggled as a fighter in Europe and was entirely phased out by the end of 1944 after really only one year of real service in the Western Theatre. Even the famed Mosquito was only renowned for it's high speed low altitude raids, not because it was an excellent fighter.
      So you guys are giving the P38 way too much credit. It's performance when compared to the Bf110 was actually comparable, Bf110 was actually more agile but the P38 was normally faster. The so called superior dog fighting prowess of the P38 is heavily exaggerated.
      Heck it's even noticeable in simulation games like IL-2 and War Thunder, Bf110 being far easier to fly. They both perform well if using identical tactics but I prefer the Bf110s without question in War Thunder because they handle better.
      No heavy fighter was a match for a single engine fighter if the skill and training if the pilots were equal however. This is why the P38 made a name for itself in the Pacific not Europe. The Pacific in which kill to lose ratios were off the charts in the latter years. So of course the P38 would get a high kill to lose ratio there, the Hellcat blew it out of the water though.... and it was a single engine fighter... Guess what, P38 pilots in the Pacific didn't dog fight, the hit/ran ie energy fought. Same tactic all allied pilots on the Pacific were taught, to deal with their more agile foes. This means the P38 only needed to fly faster and climb higher, didn't need to be a fighter, in this context the Bf110 would of performed relatively well in that same scenario.

    6:45 The British cavity magnetron was an improvement on a German one. WHAT! No, magnetron is a generic term for a tube which employs a magnetic field. The 1940 Randall and Boot magnetron was the first cavity magnetron as such, and was quite different from any predecessor, being able to produce far higher power. The Germans eventually (1945) developed a magnetron radar (FuG 240 Berlin), based on a copy of the British magnetron

    • @proudsnowtiger
      @proudsnowtiger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Came here to say the same. There was a pre-war German magnetron, but it wasn't a cavity design and it didn't have the power of the Ramdall and Boot invention. It was used in test equipment only, and not seen as significant.

    • @virtualinfinity6280
      @virtualinfinity6280 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@proudsnowtiger ...and you are both wrong. True, the first magnetron done by Greinacher did not work properly, but showed the basic design. The first working magnetron was done by Hull in the US , Habann in Germany and Zacel in Prague. The first high-frequency magnetron was created by Okabe in Japan and the first high-power magnetron by Nakajima, also in Japan.
      The work of Randall and Boot was a significant improvement of the Hollman (German) magnetron, patented in 1939. It was significant, as it considerably improved Hollmans design and allowed for several orders of magnitude in better output, thus making it practical for high-precision radar applications. So the statement in the video is correct - it was an improvement of the original german design, although a very significant one.

      Yes, cavity magnetron was a British development early in WW2 by John Randall and Harry Boot developed before rapid development of the idea by British company GEC produced many orders of magnitude more power (e.g. 25KW) than earlier magnetron designs.
      The ability to generate and radiate such high peak power at centimetric wavelengths in a small robust unit was major advancement in RADAR that gave the Allies an advantage until the end of the war.

    The original concept of a heavy escort fighter was a good one, it was radar that doomed it. German fast bombers and the ME110 escorts would enter the target countries air space at altitude, and only be detected visually. Interceptors would then take off to stop them, and the 110s would dive to attack them. They could then zoom climb or dive away, but they have prevented the interceptors from reaching the bombers, who drop their loads on target and speed away. Worked in Poland and France. But in England, they knew they were coming via radar and the interceptors would be at altitude by the time the 110s arrived. Now the advantage is with the single engine fighters, and the 110s couldn't perform their intended role.

    • @TheArgieH
      @TheArgieH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Wind forward a few years and the radar equipped Bf 110 night fighters lay in wait for the RAF heavy bomber streams. Even worse, the RAF's then navigation radar acted like a beacon for the night fighters receivers. Enter the Mosquito NF escort, with its own radar (a lot better than German thanks to the cavity magnetron giving millimetric wavelengths) plus its own cannon and mgs. Evened things up more than a bit - allegedly.

Technical advances were continuous, but apprehension varied depending on which nation. That's a gross misrepresentation. Certainly, the Bf 110s did have some really bad days, usually when they were flying slow, close bomber escort, but they had some very good days as well, inflicting heavy losses on the RAF on occasion, in particular when it was employed to its strengths such as high advance waves that were able to dive on rising RAF fighters and then get the hell out of Dodge - a common fighter tactic on all sides. It's certainly not true that 'few returned'.
      They were withdrawn partly because some were sent to act as night fighters to combat the RAF's raids on Germany itself, and partly because production didn't match losses - as much a reflection of German aircraft production management as in the effectiveness of the Bf 110 as a fighting machine. The real reason that sunk the BF 110 design was rate of climb which is important to any interceptor/fighter design. When you look at Wing loading, low-altitude performance and firepower it handily beat anyting the British or United States could throw at it until late 1943. It wasn't a bad design by any means, it could actually out-turn a hurricane or spitfire in a low speed, low altitude dogfight

Once fitted with DB 601 and eventually DB 605 engines, the Fw 187 had to potential to cause no end of problems for the RAF with its reasonably long range and potentially near 400 mph speed for its initial versions.

    Correction on one of your claims. The cavity magnetron was not based on German original designs. In 1939, Harry Boot and John Randall found a use for the magnetron tube invented by A. W. Hull, of the US, in 1929. They adapted the design, and found that it could generate a signal at 9.8 cm and 400 watts. The Germans were astonished when they discovered a resulting system on a downed British bomber.

    The two engined powered concept did not pay off for almost any airforce. The „schräge Musik“ (you could translate it to „odd music“ - but basically „schräg“ means „angled“) was designed for daytime as the upward firing guns were connected to a photo cell to react to the shadow of a plane flying overhead and then would start firing automatically (Zellendusche = Cell shower). Of course this does not work at night…furthermore, a taken down plane would mean two casualties in the worst case…

      The twin engine heavy fighter concept was fine, but the way it was implemented by the Luftwaffe was not. The added weight and bulk imposed by multiple crewmembers and rear firing armament handicapped the performance of the 110, the 210, and the 410. They finally learned the lesson with the DO-335, but it was too late to make a difference.

    • @booferz4391
      @booferz4391 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Germans had 13mm guns, not 12.7. The airframe itself was heavy, areodynamicslly limited, and armoured. It’s a sledgehammer of combat aircraft, not a scalpel like a 109. The differences in weaponry from 2x20mm and 4x7.92 to 6 12.7mm guns wouldn’t change enough to warrant the aircraft for a role change. This is one of my favourite aircraft of all time, and they are fantastically capable aircraft, especially the later G models. They were just misused once the British had radar installations. However, this is in hindsight, and this was still in the early years of the heavy fighter/support aircraft concept in that form. Sorry for the long message 😂

    During the latter stages of the battle of Britain the 110s did some low level nuisance raids that were quite successful but again its a simple fact that if they had been put to work earlier poking out fighter commands eyes (radar) at every available opportunity things would have possibly turned out quite differently, lucky for us all Goring and his boss were a pair of dim wits who shouldn't be left in charge of anything let alone an airforce.

      True...the 110 should have been used from the beginning to beat up airfields and attack installations, not escort bombers and do fighter sweeps.
