Just had a branch fall into my protos yesterday. Helmet and head were great. Should not have put hand up though. Broke finger against helmet. All is well better than being dead. Spend the money.

If it's not comfortable you won't wear it...I love my Protos Arborist Helmet...I bought one 6 months ago based on your negative feedback on the Stihl ... its so comfortable I seriously don't even notice I'm wearing it...👍👍
Gord loved the video today. I cut a fair amount of wood for many years and never wore a helmet. I was really lucky I never go hurt bad got a few goose eggs over the years. I’m older any disabled now and a few years ago an old timer that was a friend ( mid 80s). Was out cutting all day by himself on miles long fence rows and never came home. His wife was disabled and knew he would be home by dark. It took 2 hours for the sherif and rescue to find him but the widow maker got him. The price of safety gear is nothing compared to what we all lost.😮

As my forestry professor told us one of the first days in class. You don’t walk INTO the woods without a hard hat, they don’t call them widow makers for nothing…referring to hanging branches. I learned something new about the service life today; thanks for the PSA!
Happy holiday! I just pulled the trigger on that helmet and I'm 66 yrs old. I've got two old Stihl hats with ear and face PPE and neither of those owe me a dime and both have done their job over and over with primary insults being slash and branches in the face. So IMO make an attempt to spend as much as you can regardless on how much time you spend actively felling.
I personally NEVER run a saw in full PPE, things happen. Word for knowledge: "accidents are caused they don't just happen!" Oh, 'DEAD WOOD," in 2002 I was felling beatle kill in N. AZ. I was 40+ ft up, wedged a saw, second saw up, finishing the job, (last tree of the day, (MISTAKE!!!) barber chair. I was able to drop down a few feet, hit in the hardhat, pushed me over, hit just behind right shoulder pushing me into the tree. I was able to climb down. Damage: compression fx neck, 3 broken ribs and a horrible embarrassment. I knew it was bad from the start and should have modified my topping procedure.
To everyone, PPE should be your first purchase when buying your first saw! At 66 yrs, I'm on my 3rd pair of chaps.
Although expensive you can’t beat the Protos for Tree Work!!!
I have to get into making safety helmets. Wow. Good safety equipment is always worth it.

Same here when i saw Cotontop Tim's video of being hit by the stray falling branch.
Looked at my aged stihl helmets and said time for an upgrade.
Have cut for a week with the Protos. it's extremely high quality and very comfortable.

Old vid but quick comment about sweat bands - the terrycloth ones absorb a lot more sweat and are easy to remove and wash. Cheap too. Avoids the forehead rash.
Hi GP: I have Protos Integral helmet and a Husqvarna Technical helmet. The Protos helmet is by far the most comfortable for all day wear. I like the chinstrap and the low profile design. Running forestry equipment, I like the chinstrap just in case there is an accident with the equipment, with the chinstrap, the helmet should stay on my head. The low profile makes it easy getting in and out of the cabs without hitting the face shield. The Protos is expensive, but a fantastic helmet.

Have a buddy that's a DR. When we first met 30 years ago he rode hair scramble race's with his dirt bike. He brought a new helmet and I asked why pay so much money for it, he said if you have a 10 dollar head you by 10 dollar helmet you have a Dr's brain you buy a Dr's piece helmet cause they are built better. I'm just a retired electrician so I always went cheap. Great video as always 👍 thanks 😊
I’ve got a Protos Integral as well. I love the 🇨🇦 on your face shield! I went boring and just got an orange and charcoal helmet with a plain black shield. The integrated ear muffs that tuck up and under the helmet are my favourite feature, along with the smooth operation of the shield and infinite adjustment to suit your noggin shape. Like a pfd when on the water: a comfortable helmet is one you actually wear.
Yes it is a lot of money, but when you’re out working in the forest, all it takes is one widow maker to come down to ruin your day (or longer). To each their own, but I choose to wear my helmet. For the ultimate in quality and comfort, I chose to pony up the money for a Protos. (edited to fix typo)
There is dead Ash trees everywhere when I'm working in the forest don't like being in there without a helmet
Great information Gord - the evolution of protection has come a long way, glad you found the Mercedes in the helmet world, superior protection and comfort that the company stands behind worldwide. Your Gripo can be used for when you wipper snip or nail it to the wall in your shed as a reminder. Guy has burnt a lot so far this winter, hope March is not that cold for him. That Protos looks good. An arborist I like to watch & his crew wear them. I have a big head and have not been able to find 1 close so I can try on.
In high school 66-69 I had to give a speech about a controversial topic. I chose to talk about motorcycle helmets. I found out a lot of interesting facts.
The Protos is in a class of its own, just superb quality and comfort
Looks and your comments are pushing me in the direction of getting a Protos Arborist helmet. Besides using such a helmet for firewood, my wife and I many times will use the chipper (and is quite loud) for turning the smaller limbs into mulch. We really need a good communication system when the chipper is being used as well as the log splitter. I see the Protos are available with the Sena 4 system and was curious about how well the muffs reduce the sound, as well as the quality of communication if the Sena 4 is installed. My current helmet is an Oregon w/ face shield but does not have any communication system. Perhaps I could install the Sean 4 into it.?.? We currently use Sena 'over the head' headsets, but that doesn't allow a helmet. The mic in the headsets have a very good noise canceling ability and am happy with them. Hey good luck Dave. I am not familiar with the Sena's but the helmet is awesome. I might suggest you email them on the Pfannercanada website and I am sure they can help you further. I am fortunate my neighbour Guy is big on safety so we v=have hand signals between us when working with chainsaws, splitter and chippers. Wish you the best- have a great and safe summer!

The chin strap is removable for ground work; my understanding it’s better to have the helmet move and take the impact force away.
I had the same problems with my Stihl. I also had problems with the muffs popping out away from my head. I decided to purchase a Protos last year but I haven't been able to afford it yet. I will acquire it before spring and cutting season. FYI-A tree service person died due to a limb coming down in Western WA on January 20th. He wore an old-style helmet but I heard it wouldn't have mattered. His friend makes videos for TH-cam under Guilty of Treeson. There is a tribute to Jed there. You can't argue expense when you hear that.

I did not know about service life, for sure my cheaper Stihl version is too old. Secondly when I fist started riding a motorcycle, someone said to me when I was thinking of going cheap “whats your head worth?”, I didn’t buy the cheapie. I certainly don’t cut as much standing wood as you do but the Protos while big bucks will be my choice, I have been ‘brushed’ once this year, thats enuf. Secondly the Protos also offers integrated safety glasses and for those who need to talk to others there is an integrated microphone/headphone option if I recall correctly. Bucks - but whats you head worth if you drop trees, especially standing dead? Thanks Gord!
Makes good sense David! I did also buy the optional safety glasses. Integrated right into the helmet and adjustable two different ways. They put a lot of thought into the helmet. Best of luck!
The extra cost of the Sthil helmet is name brand. I don't know anyone that has purchased one that likes it. The Protos sure looks like a well-made product and I am looking forward to more reviews. Thanks again GP. Cheers

Got to slightly defend Stihl lids. I’ve been using a mid range one for just over 5yrs. and though I’ve got a couple of gripes, rain, snow or hail passing between the visor and the peak, has never been a thing. Not happened and not thought about it really. The gripes of my particular lid, are that the ear defenders occasionally detach in thick brush and the visor when fully open, can catch on low branches of neighbouring growth.
I’m in Brexitania, here and in the EU, industrial helmets including those used in forestry & by arborists. Must be replaced every 5yrs., from date of manufacture. I think a lot of people go over that but for insurance cover, it’s 5yrs. maximum. Even if the lid has an UV indicator.
But the renewal of safety lids, due supposed UV degradation, is overstated. The regs. have not kept pace with the change of construction material type. Yes polyurethane does soften & degrade with exposure to UV light and yes certain safety helmets, notably motorcycle helmets are partially made with polyurethane.
However, the vast majority of industrial safety lids, (including those for chainsaw protection) are actually made from ABS, (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). And one of the notable attributes of ABS, is that it does not soften, nor harden, nor degrade with exposure to UV.
So while the regs. say 5yrs. This is just pandering to the whims of manufacturers. Who are happy to over-sell their products; and safety regulators, who just can’t be bothered to update their outdated knowledge of manufacture materials.

Fantastic video sir…thanks a ton you really did anyone watching a service and saved them some time, i couldn’t agree with you more on the the stihl helmet albeit a different (basic function economy design) but for a 120usd helmet it’s truly underwhelming almost to the point of being insulting ( the ear muffs are the cheapest pieces of crap with the flimsiest plastic connectors ever) not only that the steel mesh cover really obstructs your view and at 110$ usd on Amazon as of 10/2023 so considering the husqvarna is half the price and imo a better helmet overall With some electrical protection as well as better mesh for viewing and much better ear muff adjustments so I can wholehearted and honestly recommend it over the stihl and save yourself 60 bucks…the protos is on another level and out of my needs tbh but a very nice one nonetheless. Hey Gord, thanks for the helmet research. Just like you I have a gripo and stihl helmets. My buddy doesn’t like the stihl…as for me it’s ok. At least once a year something hit my helmet and appreciate the protection.
I liked my Husqvarna helmet. But, it's getting kinda old. So, I ordered the red and yellow Protos.

GP great review, ironically I had a video planned in the near future on my Pfanner helmet as well.
I’ve had my Photos Pfanner for about 2 years, As you pointed out it’s extremely comfortable, my only issue is the chin strap, I find it a bit cumbersome with the magnet and occasionally pinch my neck.

Stihl is a great brand for any saw but ppe is their Achilles heel I go husqy all day for economical forestry ppe
Thanks for your review. Timely since I’m on the hunt for a helmet. It’s been a bit frustrating finding one thats well fitting for my small head. One size fits all helmets generally doesn’t work out well for women. I’m not in the bush cutting on my property enough to spring for the Protos but it’s likely the one that would be the most flexible for fitting. Thanks again

I love my Stihl power equipment, but feel like their PPE is an afterthought. It is also hard to drop $600 on a pair of boots or $400 on a helmet without first trying them on. Thanks for doing the research on these and giving us your opinions. With only a few dealers in the major cities in Canada, your videos offer great insight into this specialty equipment.

Timely video. Was in the market for a new helmet as getting ready to get back in the bush. My Husqvarna helmet's faceshield keep rusting out (3rd one) and have the same problem with them staying on the old noggin. Thank you for the review.

The earmuffs on the Pfanner helmet have an SNR rating of 26db. I use 3M Peltor X4P5 earmuffs which offer significantly more protection (SNR 32db). By comparison a good pair of foam earplugs have 38db SNR. For the price, it seems like Pfanner could do better?
Morning - that's an interesting one. I am not too familiar with SNR, to be honest. Any PPE I have ever used always uses NRR as the spec for Protection. Anything over 22 db NRR is recommended (from previous knowledge). I did see the SNR chart on the manual but didn't pay too much attention to it ( cause I was not sure of it's relative importance to me for ear protection, to be honest). .Thanks for bringing it up - I might spend some time trying to understand it. I have same but the hearing protection sucks ...over $300 one should not have pain and loose hearing from basic only protection!

I tried for a while using the exact same cheap Chinese forestry helmet you have with the "Gripo" brand. I guess this is generic stuff that's sold everywhere under who knows whose brands. I bought mine from the Swedish hardware retail chain Biltema in one of their stores in Finland. The hard hat was relatively usable with a good fit and poor comfort, and did protect from a large branch falling on my head. The visor is not exactly good in less than optimal lighting conditions as you know after trying better options. Quite useless when it snows.
But none of this was The Issue with the cheapo: the hearing protectors lacked sealing pressure and would not do much to actually protect hearing. This is why I tossed it instead of saving for daytime firewood work and other non forestry things. Other than that it would have been OK for at least some light duty use on my yard in bright daylight, or for a spare helmet. The visor wire mesh was nice for blocking a ventilation hole from rodents though, so it saved me a trip to buy something and was eventually worth every ~20 euros I paid for it.
I currently have the same Stihl helmet, and I like it. Probably has to do with head shape too and would not fit everyone. This kit with the regular hearing protectors is around €120 around here which may not be a dream deal, but with a BT headset it's €200. This is less than just a Husqvarna BT headset accessory alone would cost, for their helmet kit you buy separately, so... It depends a lot on what your needs and criteria are.
I guess the chainsaw brand helmets I mention are among the cheapest and most balanced options when looking for safe and fairly usable PPE quality, basic connectivity and a proper visor. Not as much so when looking for the bare minimum. And especially they don't offer anything that could compete with the Protos. That felt just too expensive, let's see how I assess this next time with constantly growing expectations.
Your video almost - almost - seems like a prophecy. I've also used several Husqvarna and 3M hard hats and just might consider the Pfanner Protos as I believe it's better than anything I tried yet. Except currently their extra cost for the very basic feature of BT connectivity costs about €500 extra which is ridiculous. That's a lot compared to Stihl's 80. The actual Pfanner helmet without features at 250 isn't that bad for what you get, but I think one could reasonably expect BT at a total of less than 400. I mean, who buys an expensive pro helmet without connectivity in 2023? That's a minority to say the least. And it's the least expensive, almost bolt on, part of R&D for something like the Protos PPE system.
Good day GP, excellent video. The Pfanner helmet looks great and I have been thinking of upgrading to one. I have been wearing Stihl helmets for decades and I cut all year round, summer, fall, winter until it gets to muddy in the Springtime. I agree, even though I wear Stihl helmets I am not impressed with the quality. They are cheap and not comfortable, I guess I have just become accustomed to them. Have a great day!

service live, in my opinion, is just a ploy to make you buy another helmet in a couple of years. same goes for motorcycle helmets. as long as they havent been abused or impacted, they are pretty much ok......jmho. great info though, appreciate the segment.
UV, ozone, chemical exposure, and impact events(accident & mishandling) are the big issues with helmets. If you keep them properly when not actually in use, they will have a much longer service life. The service life from mfgs. is derived from actual testing for above average to extreme usage conditions, but it is also a liability escape route for them when bad things happen to someone when the product is beyond that time period, even if they did take good care with it.
