- The Si Du River Bridge (Siduhe Bridge, 四渡河特大桥) in China is the highest bridge in the world. The distance from the bridge to the bottom of the steep gorge is 472 m (1,549 ft).
Please note that the Royal Gorge Bridge in America is 955 feet (291 m) high,
and the Millau Viaduct is 890 ft (271 m) in height.

The deck height of a bridge is the maximum vertical drop distance from the bridge deck (the road bed of a bridge) down to the ground or water surface beneath the bridge span. Deck height should not be confused with structural height, which measures the maximum vertical distance from the uppermost point of a bridge (e.g. top of the bridge tower) down to the lowest visible point of a bridge, where its piers emerge from the surface of the ground, foundation or water.
Give China credit for dams ,bridges,rail lines and tall buildings they make some safe good looking projects.
Its nice to be able to separate fact from fiction. Which was why I visited the Si Du River Bridge in China. By the way there is a shoulder high barrier on both sides of the bridge to prevent people from taking a wrong step.

You are right, it is truly an amazing bridge. Yes, getting to the bridge was rather difficult to find. I first took a bus from Yichang to Langpingzhen village which was closest to the bridge, then hired a taxi. My advice to anyone wishing to visit the Si Du River bridge is to take a GPS navigator with you.

Thank you for the comment. There is a lot a confusion in the media as to what is the actual highest bridge in the world. As stated in Wikipedia the Si Du River Bridge is the highest.

@Finestizpro please List_of_highest_bridges_in_the_world on Wikipedia for more details. The Si Du River Bridge has a height of 1,627 ft (496 m), coming 2nd is the Baluarte Bridge in Mexico which is 1,280 ft (390 m) high from the valley floor.
there are lots of foreign engineers in China, if you got the skill you are welcome to work in China and well paid.

@Finestizpro Sorry to disapoint you, it is neither the worlds tallest bridge which is the Millau Viaduct in France, nor is it the highest bridge which is the Si Du River Bridge in China.
On wikipedia it gives two measurements; on the page showing table of highest bridges it is 1050 feet (321m), and on the Royal Gorge Bridge page it is 955 feet (291 m). Which one is right?

Yes the TALLEST is Millay Viaduct in France, but the HIGHEST is Si Du River Bridge beating the Baluarte by 93 m.

Does it really matter HOW high this is, or if it is the ''highest'' [deck above water] or not..it is a really high bridge, and makes our own old Bridge in Bristol, at 72 metres look small...and even that bridge makes people go jelly kneed as they cross it. Especially when it sways and bounces in the wind.

Chesapeake (parrell, notice I did NOYT say "twin") Bay bridges, as in William Preston Lane Jr.Memorial Bridge, or WIlliam P.Lane, are pretty high! 190 ft. (part of the reason they're so scary)

You have know idea what you are talking about. Do you have any evidence to prove this? Chinese infrastructure is now way ahead of many western countries. In America they can't even construct a proper high speed railway from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Compared to the new railway line from Beijing to Shanghai, a 900mile journey that takes just 5 hours, now that's progress !
