  • Here are the essential stretches young hockey goalies should be working on. 8-13 year old hockey goalies don't need the same type of mobility training that a pro goalie does, their bodies are different and this is where they need to start.

      Good to develop the habit and they can work on drills like I laid out in the video (especially as they grow), they do not need to do the type of mobility training older goalies do.

      @@goalietraining Sometimes at that age, if we tell them "Hey this stretch is for you as a goalie" It seems, they work harder at actual doing their stretching rather than the half-lazy stretches. Safety in preventing injuries is in part stretching. So this is good info.

    • @goalietraining
      @goalietraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those can be slow to heal, your VERY best option is to work with a good sport physio. There are several muscles in the Rotator Cuff, so it depends a little which muscle you tore, the degree of the tear, etc.

    I'm an "owner" of an 8 years old goalie! It's a very good suggestion to make them move a little in this pandemic year to keep some sort of mobility! Do you recommend to make a warm-up before the stretching. Like a light jogging, jumping jack or else? Or it can be made from scratch when he woke up in the morning?

    • @goalietraining
      @goalietraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do not need to warm up before doing mobility. The key to keeping them moving is encouraging free play... like we used to do when we were kids - making up our own games to work on puck handling, catching, whatever. I know it can be hard because they can't play with their friends, but still lots of ways to stay active.

    • @maximeboisclair
      @maximeboisclair 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@goalietraining Thanks for the answer! We'll try the routine tomorrow morning. And you're right, at that age they just need to PLAY! It's so important as you said in the video : having smile before, during and after our trip to the arena (when it's going to be reopen!).

    Goalie parent, just found out my 10yo son has KBG syndrome (nothing too serious just answers to why he's shorter than normal) and one of the concerns as he gets older is the potential to develop or discover hip dysplasia. We'll try to work this into his routine but I thought I had saw a vid, or maybe it was a comment, in which you mention hip dysplasia. I bring this up because when he's in a butterfly his upper legs does almost a perfect split with his groin nearly touching the ice. He'll just sit there like that waiting his turn in the net and he's never stretched for that. He never tries to do a full split when actively blocking or kick save. Should we be concerned at this point, just keep an eye out, or be thankful he might have the hips for the splits while keeping an eye out?

    • @goalietraining
      @goalietraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you need to be concerned - like you said he isn't over using it, it's just comfortable for him - kids can be pretty bendy at that age too, so if he is comfortable there it means his hip structure allows him to do it.

    Goalie parents with a brand new 8 year old goalie

    • @goalietraining
      @goalietraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazing! Here's my very best advice - don't worry about off-ice training until he is around 14 years of age. If he can play other sports - perfect - or even skate out as his second sport. Keep hockey a fun treat for your little goalie, they will have to learn to take their lumps - if they can learn that as they develop it will help them when they get playing 'important' hockey if they so desire. Finally - if they are super motivated and just want to do more - then focus on skill - skating (even like the skaters do), catching, puck handling - that is time well spent if they want to.
