Great car! So glad to see someone putting these cars back to their original condition. I have never liked those "panscrapers" with narrowed beams. I got my first VW almost 38 years ago. I still own it and have done my best to keep it original. I commend you for your efforts.
Awesome video Gav and Sam. So great to here the story of your 49 Gav. Certainly shines throught with your passion and commitment. A few of your comments I certainly can relate too 😂. Great Post 👌
Tbh and please don't shoot me down in flames, as a petrolhead I _understand_ it of course,, and the history goes without saying, but I never really got the VW Beetle thing personally. I've only driven one once(late 60's version) and it tried to hasten my end. Clearly it felt my vibes and tried to teach me a lesson. 😁They have personality, that's for sure. However, I 100% get Gav and Gav's car and it's bloody great to see and hear their journey. And it looks bloody brilliant with it. Subbed.
Haha thanks for subscribing despite your experience :) Maybe give the old VWs another chance. I know one can differ massively to the next. For many, the Bug bites instantly.
Gav, great on you for bringing this back, really unique and very different. I cannot imaging all the stories of finding parts to make it correct, but what a gem! Thank you as a fellow car guy and history buff.
Way to go! That "Brezelfenster" looks great! I like the patina. My ´75 1200 still has original paint on many parts, the interior is all patched up and it´s got the original rebuilt engine and gearbox. 34 horses are enough for me. Still my everyday car during the summer. Bought it in ´87 and will never sell it... btw Würzburg is in Western Germany :) Cheers from Germany Doc
Good video production work. Great vehicle. The restoration of my 1967 21 window sunroof deluxe bus wrapped up in 2024. I had it done by a couple dedicated to completely stock vintage specifications. They even found an age appropriate engine block. I found the bus 30 years ago, essentially just a shell when I found it. See Eskimotom's 1967 Lake Wobegon bus in the Samba under split bus restorations. It's looking for its next curator.
What an intriguing vehicle! A true Cold War historical relic! Personally, I just love that it's been dragged along the ground for part of it's life; just adds to this vehicle's remarkable provenance! Be nice if you could find out what it was doing from around '56 to '67. Congratulations on this remarkable aquisition; love the patina!
Yeah its come full circle, such a great outcome for a piece of history. Will update this video if we hear more about its missing years. Thanks for watching!
Nice to see this grandfather was converted back to its original ride height from a lowrider. Hopefully other rare splits which are put into this crazy childish idea can be restored again to look like this.
Making a VW beetle into a low rider is only something an ignorant savage would do! Especially an old one like this. Take a beautiful car renowned for its off-road capability and completely ruin that capability and decrease its value by converting it to a low rider is abhorrent! Happy to see it valued for the sexy gem it is!!
Absolutely! I’ve seen it; gravel sanded oil sump covers and wrecked engines from low riders! I’d raise a bug with reduction gears for improved off road performance though! The stance, ground clearances in early bugs look different from the later ones, they are higher off the ground with skinny tires.
Great car, love the sympathetic restoration and return to its correct look. Strange to see a left hand drive car in Australia, but I was told to believe that you couldn't have left hand drive in Australia. How is that possible? Is it because it's a classic and historic vehicle of a certain age?
So glad this car ended up in caring hands, I detest the panscraper movement when it comes to rare cars, yes it looks cool, but do it to a model that there are thousands of, not a 49 like this.
I can't understand anyone who lowers a car's suspension: I don't see the slightest point in destroying and worsening the comfort and dynamics of a car.
It depends how much Is lowered, panscrapers are stupid yes but slighty lower actually improves the dynamics, Just look any OEM sport version of any car
Beautiful car. Nothing needs to change.
Thanks for watching, I know Gav loves hearing the feedback ;)
Great job!
So good to see it back from the pan scraper stupidity
We appreciate all heights here :)
I agree, the panscraper is absolutely idiotic particularly if it damages the car like in this example.
@@Lobo-ih3bh how can panscraping damage 6" of body? lol

Really enjoyed this video - great job on bringing this car back to where it should be.
I think you did an absolutely fantastic job with this bug.
He sure did, thanks for the support

Too kind, thank you!
Nailed another one mate 👌🏼

Thanks mate
Well shot and super interesting to hear about the varied history and iterations of a rare split Beetle. Great story telling.
Thanks mate!
Nice car, I love it….
Wow, great car, owner and story! A little correction: Würzburg is located in the western part of Germany, Greetings from Germany!
Wurzburg wound up being in the American Sector at the end of WWII so the car might have been used by the military?
@@richardhill6125Yeah, could have been that way.
Interesting, we'll have to keep on digging.
Yeah, I was wondering about that. If that was in the eastern part that would have been part of Russian controlled East Germany.
This is a mesmerising car. So glad you didn’t sell it …
This is stunning and beautiful! I wish my bug was this old! Thanks for sharing!
Greetings from Germany
Awesome! Thanks for watching :)

Cheers Kev, thanks for the support :)
This is an absolutely beautiful car! Congratulations, Gav, on seeing the restoration through. It must be so much fun to drive it around now! ❤👍🤙
Thanks for the feedback mate!
hit it again mate, nice one Sam.
Great story. Thanks for bringing her back to life. Dig the kdf huncaps.
Its all in the details ;)
very cool story on a great VW!
Amazing split window with a nice blend of history, patina and minimal customizing (Okrasa carbs etc.). Good work 👍👍👍 thanks for sharing.
Thanks again for watching mate

Love hearing from our Geman mates!
Onya, Gav, for a great car and kudos to the video team for a great production. I’m about to hit the subscribe button!
Really appreciate the subscribe, glad you enjoyed!
Nice patina beetle. I have an early 1950. also a standard in the same color and enjoy every ride. Greetings from the Netherlands
Awesome to hear people are watching from Netherlands, thanks for the comment :)
It's just a beautiful car! Well done!
It sure is. Thank you for watching :)
Incredible beetle. Love to find me any pre 60 beetle. Currently bringing a 62 back to life

Lowering a car is far from the worst thing you can do to a car, but building a car super low static setup and dragging the pan is stupid...

The great thing about our scene is the massive variety. The one thing we share is a unique passion for our own car.
5:22 - I built that 68 Ghia in 2009 at House of Ghia in Salem Oregon, it was sold to a guy in Germany.
love the car nice

Our new cars are all RHD but imports and vintage cars are fine to be kept LHD.
My dad had a 52 standard here in America, hoping to find it one day.
Excelente parabéns pelo raro modelo e cuidado .

I love the original paint look. Be careful tho. It can be invisible on the road. Don't expect other drivers to see you
Great Video! Any other funky Volkswagens down under like an SP2 or a Gurgel from Brazil?
Definitely are, plz subscribe as Ive got some rare ones coming soon.
Great video and story. It reminds me of videos on Petrolicious YT channel. ❤
Thank you thats such a big compliment for a new channel, just one guy and a camera. Really appreciate it.
I believe i heard that here in the US , we had only 2 imported that year !
👍

It's a sickness 🙃
I know the guys that made it a scraper... douchebags, they have ruined a lot of nice vintage VW's for their own 'cool'...
Each to their own, thats what makes VWs so fun.
Nothing original about the aside from appearance - not even that, looks a lot like fake patina restoration.
We can only do our best.
