  • Carson shoots an apple off host Garry Moore's head with a bow and arrow, in a bit that presages the famous Ed Ames segment on The Tonight Show.

    I watched the video before reading the description. I kept thinking of that tomahawk demonstration the entire time.

    If I didn't know better, I would've guessed that Betsy Palmer was the former Miss America. She and Bess were both beautiful women.

    Never knew this one existed. Never saw it before. Interesting. Moore was a good actor; I never could understand why he was such a roaring success but then I've seen comparatively little of his work. Arthur Godfrey, though, I could watch all day.

    Keith Evers: Despite my name and my interest in TV, I am unrelated to Johnny Carson, but am distantly related to Kit Carson.

    How did you get this footage in such good quality and such great directing?!

  • @richardkcarson
    @richardkcarson  12 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    @nykfan97 I transferred a VHS tape from the TV using a hardware device from MAGIX and the Roxio software that came installed on my Windows 7 computer, which saved it as an .AVI file. Then I trimmed that file in Sony Vegas Movie Studio and converted the result to a .WMV file for uploading.

    I miss this America. It was a better, smarter, much less brainwashed country back then.

    I can see Garry Moore jokingly saying just before the practice and after they lost $80 worth of the game, "I like to tell you all something. I like to let you in on a little secret. Those four over there, the panel, the producers, the director, everybody involved with 'I've Got A Secret,' with the exclusion of Johnny and myself, hate me." I can also see him saying after Johnny tells him that there is no danger whatsoever, "Of course there's no danger with HIM, he's a DUMMY! (To the mannequin) My apologies, old boy!" Finally, I can see him saying just after the practice shot, "I am covered by Blue Cross, am I not?"

    At the time, Johnny was emcee of the daily comedy/quiz show "WHO DO YOU TRUST?" on ABC (which he presided over through September 1962, after which he became host of NBC's 'TONIGHT SHOW", taking his announcer Ed McMahon with him).

      I have an episode of "Who Do You Trust" starring Johnny Carson as the host on a dvd 📀. The episode that I have is from the 1950s and it includes the commercials for back then. The show and the commercials were live. Johnny Carson did a jello commercial introducing Jell-O instant pudding. He was explaining how to make the pudding and he was suppose to alternate the pudding with the pineapple in a glass. He made the mistake of putting the strained pineapple in the pudding instead of setting it aside. After he put the pineapple in the pudding and was explaining the next step, he realized his error 😅. The live audience laughed. They loved it. He continued with the commercial by saying "Get some Jell-O pudding for my sake. It's as much fun to make as it is to eat, but not the way that I made it. Get some today." Ed McMahon came over and said to Johnny "Who does the cooking in your family?" Johnny said "We're in a lot of trouble here." Then, he said "No, but it's a really great product." I just loved Johnny Carson's sense of humor. Lol. 😅.

      +moontheloon5 But he was damn good and apparently unflappable even back then, and he got better until he retired. I miss all these folks. But God knows the dramatic shows are much better now.

      The reason Carson is sweating is because of the heat. This was recorded on August 19, 1959 in New York City and the temperature that day hit 87 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, this studio did not yet have AC and the lighting for the TV cameras added approximately an additional 10 degrees of heat.

    Carson always seems so uncomfortable in his own skin. Constantly fidgeting and touching his face. I always squirm a little bit watching him
