These old shows really give me a warm feeling. I always smile a lot. It's not just that they were running when I was a young boy (although that may be part of it) but just the personalities - I'm surprised at how genuine they so often appear to be.

@@decline2state She did not smoke. But Yul was a smoker and died @ 65 from lung cancer. And, of course, that PSA “Just don’t smoke!” Did they use the Magnificent 7 theme for the Winston commercial? (Have to see if I can find it on youtube.) I can’t recall.
I saw Yul Brynner on stage doing the play "King and I". WoW what a performance !!! He passed not to long after from cancer. He made a don't smoke commerical that ran for only a year after his death. He was my most fav of all actors. He was such a kind man.
He was obnoxious and a creep. I worked at a dinner theater and he did The King and I. His dressing room was re-done every single week because he wanted everything to be in brown, from tan to dark brown, including the walls and bathroom towels. So obnoxious.
Very fun episode. Worth mentioning how excellent the orchestra is in accompanying some of the guests. Live TV is challenging, but these musicians were the best in the NY area; so they could deliver. Superb!

I don’t think there was much known about the connection between smoking and health problems at that time. Most or all of the medical doctors at our clinic had packs of cigarettes in their shirt pockets. They quit when it became obvious that smoking could cause health problems.

It is surprising that Melinda Markey was mentioned as the daughter of Joan Bennett, but not Gene Markey. In several interviews, Melinda has said after her parents' divorce, she rarely ever saw her mother, and considered her stepmother Hedy Lamarr more as a mother to her. Melinda still occasionally shows up in Austria, visiting her half-brother.
why is that surprising? she WAS the daughter of Joan Bennett ... the show wasn't about children who have unresolved issues with their mothers and step-mothers, was it? Gene Markey was only married to Hedy Lamarr for 2 years, so I doubt your claim the she won the mother-of-the-year prize with regard to her step-daughter could be true especially since Hedy's own children have publically said she was a distant mother figure and she was completely estranged from her eldest son for over 50 years Where do you get this stuff??
Since they all knew Joan, she was the one mentioned. Her father was not as well known as her mother.
