    Thanks for demonstration, I just changed my own oil for the second time ever and it went really smoothly. Can honestly say I'll be doing it from now on!

    Hi John, this is a good video that should show everything to a beginner to change their own oil!
    If you're somewhat 'advanced' thou some of the steps are not necessary. You don't have to jack up the car at all to change the oil on any standard (i.e. not lowered) 1.8/2.0 Mk3 Golf. Just turn the steering wheel to full right lock. This way you can easily access the drain plug and container will easily fit underneath the oil pan. Reduces risk of car dropping on you or damage to sills.

    Very neat work. Great use of the newspapers too. I use mine under my oil drain pan, dont want to get it on my driveway.

    I can appreciate how it's easier to get a cam to film in with jacking up. =)
    Also like to have a look at what my car other than sump looks like, but since I jack it up ever so often anyway it's just come a second nature to change oil without jacking up. Also saves you from risks if all you want/need to do is change your oil (taking away any risk that car will drop on you which might be good for people who don't know how to do this correctly).
    Anyway still a very good example of a how-to =)

    Thanks! The Castro oil changing places are now refusing oil changes for my 97 GTI and my friends 98 GL 2.0 unless we get the $75 synthetic treatments. I have 195k and the 98 has 256k on it. This will come in handy.

    @luisalbertlucio No, you're okay. My did changed his oil for almost 40 years and has never poured oil in the filter. Some cars the filter is mounted horizontally on the side of the engine and you can't pre-fill them. /John

    Any opinions on what weight of motor oil is best for these engines, the manual calls for all sorts of grades.

    I'd like to do a tune up to my 1993 Golf Mk3. It has the same 2.0 engine as yours and I was wondering what are the best spark plugs to use?

  • @bearing01
    @bearing01  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks. What you said is true. But also, if you're somewhat "advanced" then you don't need to watch a video how to change oil. You'd be suprised how some beginners question where to place the jack stands under the car. As for not lifting the car, that's how I've watch my father change oil on his Toyota corola. I like to jack her up though so I can take a look around at things like CV joint boots and look for oil leaks.

  • @bearing01
    @bearing01  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jettaracer56 Yea.. 3/4 turn is about as tight as you can get it with bare hands. Even then you need an oil filter wrench to get it off next time. /John

    Install whatever brand / part number that's in the car now (that has been working well). I used Bosch FR8DS or equivalent. /John

  • @bearing01
    @bearing01  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @zhemin Yes it should be pretty much the same on an MK4. Multiply the quoted number of US quarts by 0.95 and that will give you the number of litres. /John

  • @bearing01
    @bearing01  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @killerpigeon347 Probably around 4 quarts. I'd add oil until it shows up just below the top mark on the dip stick. /John

      There are quite a few options for it.... could just cheat and throw a pair of turbos from an Audi A3 the same year.... some exhaust welding but otherwise just a bolt on swap and put a boost gauge in.... BUT IMHO The best thing would be to swap the ABA 2.0 GAS engine & transaxle for an ALH 1.9 TDI as it already has all the torque needed and with the proper tune it can get to somewhere near 400HP after some parts are upgraded.... NAMELY THE TIMING SYSTEM.... but the 1.9 tdi has an aftermarket direct gear-drive timing system option (no belt or chain left to fail)

  • @bearing01

    @imgannadie991 Thanks for your opinion. The filter is on hand tight./John

    @StiThis1 Thanks. /John

  • @bearing01
    @bearing01  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @killerpigeon347 Most all oil changes are the same procedure, so yes, the same should apply to a 1.6L engine. As for the air filter - you should search TH-cam to find a video on that. I plan to trade this car in a couple weeks and will be doing no more work or videos on it. Thanks, /John

  • @bearing01
    @bearing01  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dubugga In the first video, I placed it under the rib of the rocker panel.. just under the side of the car. The other place I would put it is under the car on a rib of the body. Under the car you will see a frame rib run length wise under the car. It looks something like a piece of 2x4 coming down from the body, except covered in undercoating. Put your jack stand under that. Thanks for commenting. /John

    In summer, 10W30 or 10W40 if you have high miles. If you have cold winters, use use 5W30.

    Im going to try iridium plugs on my mk3 K2.

  • @bearing01
    @bearing01  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The newer cars have a slightly different engine but the oil change procedure is pretty much the same. The only difference would be the location of the oil filter. /John

  • @bearing01
    @bearing01  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's also very difficult to get the process on camera if there's no clearance under the car to see what you're doing .

    not very nicely done...first off you put that oil filter on wayyyyyyyyyy to tight.. that tight is going to strip threads... it should only be on hand tight.. the pressure of the oil will tighten it the rest. whats with all the newspaper? if anything leave the oil filter area clear of newspaper...the oil will be good for the frame.. if the oil is 180F like you mentioned....wearing those types of rubber gloves wont do anything from that amount of heat. 200+ oil changes in the books and no glovees
