    Great documentary. Born and raised in the 585. From 2010 to 2012 I got hooked on pills then crack. January 2012 I got stabbed on clinton & Joseph over 3 dollars. Somehow was able to survive. Got clean. Unfortunately the streets of Rochester haven't.

    I live in the Bronx and was thinking about moving the Rochester to give my kids a better life, man now I'm rethinking I can stay where I'm at for this shit. I really love being a black man, I just don't know what's wrong with my people, why can't we get it together. Just violence and crime and murder wherever we go.

    I see alot of people giving up on rochester in these comments. And giving up seems to be the theme of the city with manufacturing leaving, kodak going under, etc. But if you understand the people of rochester its a whole different place. Beautiful 3 story houses have become rundown and basically shacks for people to squat in. Just pump a tiny bit of money into downtown and it will thrive. I grew up just outside of the city, in Wayne county, and worked most of my adult life in the city and I can tell you, no one is out to get you. Everyone is just out to make their situation better. Have a converstation with anyone on the street and it'll change your perspective. If we get together and show the country Rochester is still a powerhouse we can turn it around. We have the workers we just need leadership.

    I have been out of a job, and down on my luck in past. I as WELL, never robbed anyone and never joined a gang. Never killed anyone. In fact, never owned a gun. Also, when RIOTS happen. Like in 92' and pretty much whenever.. why do people "loot?" I never robbed a bank, never assaulted anyone. So, steal? Unreal. Good quote from a few yrs ago. "Don't shoot and we won't loot!" uh....... OK? (Zimmerman thing) YAY! I robbed the Dollar Tree an Family Dollar! woot woot! Good job! Looks, slavery thing needs to stop being brought up. Slavery was followed by share cropping, legal slavery, that was followed by black codes, that was followed by Jim Crow, that was followed by segregation and redlining, that was followed by mass incarceration and the war on drugs. Slavery is still alive today, just with a different name.

    All I see is excuses and false justifications for murder and violence. It doesn’t matter where you live or how broke you are; you remain there because of your MINDSET, not “the system”. Everyone all over the country has obstacles. If you resort to drugs, violence and murder; that’s on YOU. That’s YOUR mindset. You’re staining an entire city’s name because of YOUR actions. Have some accountability. There are hard-working people there trying to actually make things better, the right way.

    This was a good documentary, and technically very well done, however, I would have liked to have seen a few other things. When it comes to statistics I would have liked to see the origin. Where did those statistics come from? Also I would like to see more about what the answers are and how can they be achieved. What exactly is Mayor Warren and other governing officials doing to make Rochester better? It's October 2019 and my city Rochester, NY is currently the third poorest middle sized city in the whole U.S.A. ! I don't see the progress! Rochester was a booming manufacturing city. Now most, (full time, good paying, permanent), factory jobs are gone and STILL have not been replaced. What has Mayor Warren and our other elected officials done so far? I would love to see a video addressing those questions❗❗❗ Is it time we elected others who will make more of a difference? I'm not sure, but we are still a city of great poverty and that needs to change! General elections are in a few days and I will factor this into my decision when it comes time to vote and in my future voting.

    Why do young people join gangs, look at the declining economy in the Rochester Metropolitan Area. Eastman Kodak is on its last legs as a corporate organization, Xerox has mostly moved out, all there is are lousy low wage jobs in the service sector mostly part time. It has horribly sad what has happened to both Rochester and most of its suburbs during the past three decades. Unemployment and underemployment combined with festering poverty has literally destroyed that once proud and prosperous area. This is one reason why young people join gangs.

A thug is a individual who lacks intelligence, proper intellect ,education,and appropriate social skills. A thug is a person who was not raised in a loving family and lost self respect and respect for others. A thug is heartless and doesn't care who they hurt.
    Thugs don't just come from the hood, they don't come in a certain color or gender. They soround us ,and need to be helped mentally

    Aces WAY too fkng high. I love how like 2 minutes was spent on the rp9t cause of violence. But I'm gonna give them the b3nefit of the doubt . they're doc could probably only be so much time. We have to separate abusers from their children before the child even has a chance to remember it. Instant separation. Make the abusers feel like they lost their goddamn minds, it happened so quick.. That's a whole *other* wall of silence that exists

    Great video! My question is where are all the white people that also live in the city,there a poor white people and violence in the white community as well,not just black communities. I'm proud of my hometown born and raised in Rochester myself. But what your talking about is also going on in the white community.

      Hello Carol. Thank you for your comment! This was a student project, and we decided to focus on the specifics that were accessible to us at the time it was filmed (proximity). Therefore we worked on what were primarily impacting the community we are connected to. If you know of any film makers who can tell the story of violence in the White community in Rochester (with the passion to address it) please encourage them to do so. Thanks again for your valuable feedback.

    1st off all you doing a documentary about all this ppl smoking and drinking infront of children throwing up gang signs that's the problem right there. Ijs🤷🏾‍♀️

    • @AmenPtah
      @AmenPtah  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your comment! What you just criticized is a reality. It happened, and it was documented, hence the name "documentary." Smoking and drinking happens all the time - in front of children and in their absence. Drinking and smoking alone is a problem, because it lowers our frequencies. But that is only one symptom to a much bigger issue this documentary is addressing.

      @@AmenPtah what would suggest the solutions are because I live in the UK, I’m black we have some problems but racism is not the biggest problem, I’d like to have a dialogue with to see if some of suggestions are supportive and if my opinion is valid coming from a country foreign to you, thanks for the doc, what ever criticism people have it shouldn’t be of the documentary because it’s opening up conversation

    The Southwest side isn’t really poverty effected like that except that small strip of Jefferson Ave, otherwise the 19th ward is beautiful. The Northeast and the bottom of the Northwest is the problem of Rochester. The Southwest is kinda like the suburban black area, like honestly, where it’s disgusting is Jay St. Child Lylle, St. Paul, N Clinton, Joseph, Hudson, North St. Portland the slime, honestly tho. God bless the dead but they found the Gods body off of Hudson Ave on Dayton St. that nasty ass grim rest easy Moran

    Ain't she positive about joining a gang! It's not about community. Nothing good will come from it only death or jail and it's sad to see the leaders of the community aost condoning it. Talking about not everyone is fortunate to get jobs? You can get a job anywhere it may not be the job u want but jobs are out there! Throw the whole damn documentary away. Period.
