    Great tips Steph! We're going to be working in some flower beds once we get our fencing in place. While we don't have many deer, you may want to give tips on keeping chickens out of the gardens!!! Cheers!

    I don't have deer, but I do have groundhogs, bunnies and squirrels, that's why I've always planted my tulips in containers in fall and they over winter on my porch just fine. I'm more and more interested in bulbs in general - especially the one's you've shown here!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robyn! I have all of the above also! I always found it easier in pots as well. I do have daffodils out in the landscape, but i reserve tulips for containers. But last year when I found some for 75% off, I couldn't resist. Figured it was worth a try. I would probably try keeping them in pots directly and wintering them over, but i do like to decorate my planters with winter greens, so I tend to hold off until after the holidays to plant up my pots with bulbs.

    Great choices! While I love tulips, the 'carefree' nature of all the other bulbs you talked about (and the fact that they reliably come back year after year) puts them higher on my favourites list, esp. daffs, allium and Iris...I need more of them all! And that is quite the stash of deer repellent!! 🙃

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Margaret! I agree! I also love the idea of not worrying about plants getting eaten. Lol yes, I have quite the stash, I have to alternate to keep the deer guessing lol. And now were also getting a large population of bunnies also! oh and the groundhogs that take up residency under my neighbors shed each year! Its always something out there! Thanks for watching.

    I do have deer that come into my flower beds. During the summer, they dine on my hostas. The yellow ones seem to be their favorite! But in the spring, they go after my hyacinths, which are supposed to be deer resistant. I guess my deer have learned to like them. Thanks for your videos!

    Hi Stephanie! I’m a recent subscriber. So glad I found your channel. I am excited to try alliums this year. Yours look beautiful. Your tulip pics are beautiful…. They are tempting- but I agree- a lot of work and risk for the expense.
    I noticed on an earlier posting you referenced a fern you had saved over the winter. I’d love to know how you winterize your ferns. They look so beautiful. Where do you store them, do you trim them down, water them, feed them, bring them out for
    occasional sun, other hints? I have searched you tube and there is not a lot on this topic. I’d love to hear about your process and any tips.
    Thank you for the great content and inspiration!

      Hi Erin! I plan a video on this for this fall, likely in the next couple weeks, But I basically bring them indoor, keep them in my basment by a window and water them well at least once a week. Treat them like a houseplant! You'll want to inspect them first though to make sure nothings living in them before bringing them in! Birds, Mice, or Bunnies, you never know! Hope this helps.

    Tulips are my favorite Steph! I didn't have very good luck this year because of the voles and chipmunks. They dug up and ate half of the tulips that I planted. I was so disappointed! 😥

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mary! My favorite too, so I feel your pain. Its so dissapointing after all the work of planting them. They are the hardest Spring bulb to grow because pests love them.

  • @jenniferhooks2454

    I already decided that I would not plant tulips this coming season. I planted bicolor tulips in two containers last year. They were coming up when I traveled out of state to help my daughter with her new baby. I returned home to find that every last bulb was gone from the two containers. Dang the squirrels and the deer! I never saw the flowers.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jennifer! Yes it is so hard to keep tulips going! I try my best to hold out until the very end of season, to see if I get any deeply discounted. That way I don't feel as bad. I don't get to choose specific varities, I kinda just get whats left. But its the only way I can do tulips, and in containers, since they are easy for me to spray. Oddly, I have a little patch of tulips in the back yard near my shed, that they don't seem to notice, which is very strange. These are pink and have been coming back for a couple years. Sorry about your tulips, thats very frustrating.

      I put chicken wire over my potted tulips and let’s the tulips start to grow thru the wire mesh and then once they are starting to bloom I use more wire to encircle them!!
      Worked this year - I will try it again next spring and see if it continues to deter the critters!! Hope this might help!!🌷🌷🌷

    Hi Steph. Thanks for the inspiration. I bought some bulbs after watching your recent HD bulbs video. My problem is I live in southern California and is expecting hot weather (90F plus) and won't have cooler temperature until November. Should I put my bulbs in the garage to keep them cool? Or even in the fridge until November when I plant them? Or should I not have bought them so "early" at all?

    • @annakasikkink4842
      @annakasikkink4842 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I live in NC zone 7, and even here I have to put tulip bulbs in the refrigerator for at least 10 weeks until planting then in January or February. Many bulbs need a cold period in order to bloom, so those of us where it's not naturally cold have to give bulbs a fake winter. Depending on the variety, you may only get one year of them too. They won't reliably rebloom without a chill period.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! Here in the Northeast in my zone 6b, we don't have to chill them. However, I have a gardening friend with a TH-cam channel Janey @digplantwaterrepeat, who is in California zone 9, and she has grown tulips! It is my understanding that yes they do need a chilling period. All Spring bulbs need, and benefit from a cool period. My best guess is that you could buy them and keep them in the refridgerator for a few months until it cools off a good deal where you are, and then plant them out. Another option is to use an online retailer, that already sell "chilled bulbs". Hope this helps.

    Wisconsin deer!! Yuk!!! I have used the plastic bird netting on my hydrangeas phlox and daylillies!
    I am sure it frustrates the critters as they can see and smell the flowers but cannot get to them!!
    Fooled ‘em!!!!🌷🌷🌷

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kathy! Lol great trick! I do this with my bird netting on my rhodendrons come late Fall. I recycle the bird netting from the blueberries. The deer are my biggest pest and they devour my garden in Winter when I'm more lax on spraying repellants. So the netting helps my rhodendrons bud up and not have the buds bitten off.

      Oh Melissa! I'm sorry, its a tough compromise sometimes in Marriage. My husband likes a lawn, I want all flower beds. Your husband attracts the deer, deer eat the flowers. Tough! Hopefully if you plant things they are less likely to eat, you can still enjoy blooms!

    Few sights are more disheartening than a bed full of tulips with all the blooms nipped off by deer! One year in my NYC garden I noticed that the tulips had come up but had stopped growing. Rats had tunneled in and ate all the bulbs below the ground, leaving just the foliage. Evidently tulips are irresistible to rodents. Anyway, in the country (with deer, squirrels and ground hogs galore) I have had some luck interplanting tulips and daffodils. Maybe the smell of the poisonous daffs is off-putting. Otherwise the tulips are planted next to the front door or in a fenced-in area. I suspect the squirrels will be hungry this year as our NE drought is resulting in a small crop of acorns. I would add camassias to the list of pest-resistant bulbs.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh how dissapointing! I also had a huge border of daylilies about to bloom, and I had missed spraying them after it rained. Came out the next morning with the border completely beheaded!! not one bud left! I literally cried. So petty, I know but I was so looking forward for their blooms, which now I wouldn't get to see for another year. So I share your frustration. Great idea interplanting them with daffs!
