Still one of the greatest, best made movies I've ever seen. Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft were a phenominal pair. Incredible casting. I was a child when Patty Duke was nominated for an Oscar.

Patty Duke and the late Anne Bancroft gave the performances of their lives. No other film or video version of this timeless story will ever compare. There is a wonderful picture of Patty meeting the real Helen Keller and them finger-spelling for each other.

One of the best bio-pics of all time. It's interesting to see 16 year old Patty Duke play 7 year old Helen Keller and 31 Anne Bancroft play 18 year old Anne Sullivan.

Both credibly and tour de force. Brilliant actresses ("they broke the mold") amid a great cast whose naturalistic acting in the verisimilitudinous period sets makes us feel We Are There.

John Greene. Yeah I agree. 2 older women playing a younger woman and girl. You have your history down well actually . Still a good movie and good performances by Anne and Patty. I don't know if they could find a 7 year old to play that part as well as Patty did. :)

I both read the book from Helen and watched the movie .both are important and help to understand Helen s distress as an infant .she became wild and violent because she was frustrated . Being unable to.communicate at 19 months after an illness is unfair and horrific .. she lived in total.silence and darkness before Ann arrived ..Thanks Ann a million times for standing up to.helen and set her free from almost 5 years of darkness.Helen was normal as a baby like you and me , she could see the colours her parents and siblings and laughed , started to speak and overnight in february 1882 at 19 months she contracted à fever which left her with à double infirmity depriving her of sight and hearing and of Words she forgot all the words she had learnt and lived in a dunjeon . Sad .. Fortunately Ann came and tamed her and taught her langage..
Thanks to god and science there are vaccines against measles or scarlet fever and babies or infants the âgé of Helen when she was little can be treated ans cured..science has made huge progress..

the greatest dual performances in the history of cinema almost two different films in one,one part talkies and another part silent film. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke were in an acting zone,a master class in one on one acting;which Bancroft is one greatest in that aspect of acting. wonderful filmmaking.

My husband and I just went to the Hellen Keller house in Tuscumbia, Alabama and I recognize it in the Miracle Worker movie. Helen was named "The First Lady of Courage". In 1904, at the age of 24, Keller graduated from Radcliffe, becoming the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. AMAZING!

On this day in 1959 {October 19th} the play 'The Miracle Worker' opened on Broadway at the Playhouse Theater in N.Y.C. {it ran for 719 performances}.
And in New York City three years later on May 23rd, 1962 the movie premiered...
Patty Duke won the Academy Award for 'Best Supporting Actress'.
Then three more years later on June 26th, 1965 Patty's "Don't Just Stand There" entered the Top 100 {it eventually peaked at #8}.
Ms. Duke will celebrated her 67th birthday in two months on December 14th.

Singer/actress/conservationist Stefanie Powers is reportedly fluent in 6-7 languages and can “get by” in two more.
      Her first language is Polish.
She said she became fluent in the other languages from traveling so much.
When she was on the talk show “mike & maty” back in the 1990’s, she said, “i can speak spanish because i play polo, and have spent so much time with Argentinians.”

Amazing to see this movie reenact what working with these kids can be like. Of course ABA or PBS isn’t done as aggressively as in these scenes.

According to the “trivia” section of the movie, Patty wasn’t wanted because she was 16.
She was chosen partly because she had played the part on Broadway.
      I also read her autobiography.
By the time filming had ended, she had “blossomed.”

This entire movie is Hollywood lies. By her own admission, Helen was a very difficult child, but she was NOT feral. She knew how to do chores and how to behave in front of company, and she certainly understood basic table manners. Nor was Anne Sullivan a child abuser. In fact, she and Helen got along quite well from the beginning. In her autobiography, Keller mentions sometimes getting frustrated with Sullivan and throwing tantrums, but Sullivan didn't respond by getting violent - she acted like a decent human being and let Helen calm down. Real feral children have a history of responding very poorly to such treatment. Look up Genie, who made decent progress after being rescued, but regressed quickly and permanently after being placed in an abusive foster home.
I shudder to think of all the disabled kids who must have been abused because their parents took this piece of sensationalist nonsense or one of its ripoffs too seriously. Bad portrayals of disability, or anything else, can do very real harm.

    • @Quaker-tc8ue

      You axxume much.
I’m sure most child abusers haven’t seen this movie, as abuse is cyclical; and those with disabilities have been shut away in institutions for centuries.

@@Quaker-tc8ue You don't have to take my word for it. Foster Cline, who pioneered attachment therapy, a form of quack therapy that involves physically and mentally abusing children into unquestioning obedience, frequently compared his and his followers' victims to Helen Keller. Ten-year-old Candace Newmaker was a foster child who suffocated to death during a 70-minute rebirthing therapy session, during which her pleas to be let out and statements that she couldn't breathe were dismissed by the four unlicensed therapists as testing and manipulation from a troubled child who didn't want to get better; afterwards, Cline compared the situation to "what would have happened if Helen Keller, blind and deaf, had died in the hours-long battles that her young teacher, Anne Sullivan, was forced to put her through." Of course, there were no hours-long battles, and Keller was never in any danger of being beaten to death by Sullivan, but this is what happens when people mistake Hollywood movies for reality.
