    As an AB do you have to steer the ship ..or are you just doing watch and maintenance type stuff?

      underway, yes you are at the helm but not 4hrs straight. in Anchor you do cargo rounds & call out anchor to the mate, & in port you at the gangway. Maintenance is your overtime. some ships are different you may have rotation weekly or daily. Some days are day work and some are watch. Some ABS prefer day work cause you get all your OT.

    I didn't realize the deck department would help out in the engine room. I am an electrician! It's my second career, I was a heavy equipment mechanic for 16 years first. After I get my master electrician license I would like to join the merchant marine probably starting on the great lakes as I am from Michigan

      Electro is where it’s at!! Sadly land jobs can’t transfer to sea job, I wish it did! The upgrade is so quick though, way faster than the deck side.
      This hitch I was a GUDE - helped out on deck and engine side, sort of a training ship. It was in ROS.

      If I join I am thinking deck actually, something about being out on deck seems calming. Maybe it isn't but that's how it is in my head right now! So you know if siu sails on the great lakes and the inland rivers as well as the ocean?

    How long was the process and did u have to go to maritime school for 6 months or did u go and pay the 1k and join

    • @loisb
      @loisb  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@radwan_zzz I’m not with siu, I’m with sup. the process was about 3 months including waiting for my mmc that took the longest. I took a one week course, along with a two day class and a 5 day class which the union paid for (must work a ship beforehand)

      @@loisb ight thx so the 5day class was basically after u got hired U decided to do it if im not mistaken? Cuz so far I got my twic all my credentials just need to send to get my mmc and I'm set?

      @@radwan_zzz each ship require different endorsement but all mariners need the basic stcw 5 day course which you take before joining a union. But you don’t need the class to get your mmc only need a twic for that

      @loisb  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      did you take the stcw class? if not, you can join msc and they will put you through the course and you can add it to your mmc. but if all is good with your class certificates/mmc, you can join a union! MFOW-engine SUP-deck or SIU-galley(kitchen). Hope I answered correctly!

      @@loisb no, i watched another youtuber that said i could get a MMC without wasting money on classes , and get seatime and eventually get some endorsements. so i filled the paperwork and they already mailed to me . the thing is indont have any person close to me that it is in this bussines. so i have my twic, passport, medical cert and MMc but i dont know where to find a good job or where to start. im looking for a type of job like contracts, lets say im in the sea 6 months get off a couple months then come back etc . is there any social media i can reach at to you and talk to you?. Literally i did all paperwork watching youtube etc i would apreciate your help

      Ever think about the Rivers, Mississippi etc? They call them tow boats, they push barges up and down the major rivers. Afew companies will just hire you and train you. I think it would count to sea time and then you could join a union after a couple years? Some are 28 on and 28 off. Seems like a good gig if your heart isn't set on the high seas to start
