You don't need an app, but you do need an internet connection. The company's website is used both for their excellent hint system, and for progressing in the game (you'll answer some questions on the website to prove you have solved the puzzles and to move on). So you will need your stupid phone infrequently :)
You are free to have your preferences, of course, but the postcurious hint system is far and away the best I have ever seen for these kinds of riddle and escape room games. If you don’t want to use the internet at all in your tabletop gaming, that’s your prerogative, but in this case I’d say you are missing out

They lose me at "online hint system" Thanks for the video, looks interesting, but that's when I stopped watching and no longer cared about it.
