Good morning, Girls👋. Your roads are just like mine here in Tennessee 😂. What I don’t like is people taking the curve on the wrong side of the road 😡. We also have Amish buggies which are awful at night! Be careful out there 💗

Love Dad's Chevy Truck! The countryside outside your window during the video is so beautiful! Oh yes, here's the secret to operating the clutch: (1) Push clutch pedal realtively quickly in one motion ALL the way to the floor. (2) Then, relatively quickly and in one motion, let the clutch pedal out about 2/3 the way, maybe 3/4 depending on the car. This is the "friction point", where the clutch begins to engage. (3) From this point, let the clutch out SLOWLY, while SIMULTANEOUSLY giving gas INCREASINGLY (but also slowly, smoothly). You use this same sequence for every gear change, though each gear have different "proportions" so to speak (a little longer, a little faster, no all the way to the floor, not so slow, not so much gas, more gas, etc.. The most extreme is when pulling away from a stop. That'S when you use this procedure most literally. The other gears you can improvise a little. You even use this basic procedure for slowing down the car by shifting to a lower gear and using this "friction point" and the last 1/4 pedal motion to use the motor as a "brake". Give it another try. And Bravo Katie! No passing on blind curves, EVER! (That DOT lady was, of course, crazy.) God bless!

Luv all ur videos!!! The 'wave' explanation is spot on! I took 'driver ed' when I was 15 1/2 [way back in 1970]....1st 'driver ed' car I drove was a new [loaner from the local dealership] '70 Chevelle SS, 4 sp.. The 2nd car was a '64 Chevy Impala SS 4 sp.. Good times! When I was 5, I was 'play' driving my dad's brand new '60 Impala.....I took it out of gear, released the parking brake and 'drove' it down a steep embankment. Yes, it had to be towed back to the dealership for repairs.

I started driving a tractor when I was 5 years old and got a lot of practice by the time I turned 16. We raised tobacco and my granddaddy would put me in the seat and I would drive down the drag rows while the older kids primed the tobacco and put it on the trailer I was pulling. My driver's ed teacher fell asleep when I was taking driver's ed in school and I drove around the County about an hour before he woke up! Didn't get much instruction from him but I passed with flying colors 😄Our waves are pretty much the same as yours unless it's hot enough to ride with the windows down. Most of our vehicles growing up didn't have AC so we waved with our arm that was hanging out the window and held onto the wheel with our right hand👋 Love the driving videos!

The best segment is at 19:44 about "the waves." We don't wave much in the North because traffic is often so congested and weather can be riskier than in the South. I was told once that when police pass each other, even in a plain unmarked car, they keep the thumb wrapped around the top of the wheel for safety, and flash four fingers up and down quickly.

I’m in southwestern Virginia and the roads are varied here with Interstate 81 and then curvy backroads. I believe that we girls that drive on curvy/hilly roads are at an advantage as that helps us to be able to drive anywhere. My first year of teaching I moved to the Charlottesville VA area. One of my landlords was from Richmond and her husband was from where I live in the southwestern part of the state. When we had a big snow that winter, my landlord from Richmond started telling me, in front of her husband, about an alternate route to take to get to somewhere I was going and was telling me how careful I needed to be. Her husband started to laugh out loud and said to her, “She drives on hills and curves back home. She can out drive everyone up here!” 🤣

I grew up and learned to drive in Pittsburgh PA. There are no level or straight streets there at all. The streets are very narrow with parking on both sides, and public transportation busses squeezing through. You had to drive like a rabbit, ducking in and out, swerving left and right, and starting and stopping. There were trolly tracks in the roads and brick roads. It is all uphill and S-bends. I had to learn on a manual transmission. When I first started driving, I would go five miles out of my way to avoid certain intersections with a red light at the top of a steep hill, so I wouldn't drift backwards trying to start in first gear. Took some time but I mastered it. Happy New Years to you all.

When we went over the tracks the accelerator got stuck. We we’re going pretty fast and I couldn’t stop. He put the car in park. It sounded like the transmission fell out of the car. Thank goodness he had gone through auto shop at school. He got out and discovered the problem got it fixed. Needless to say I was shaking to death we headed straight to his house. Thankfully the car was fine.

I failed my first written test. So my friend took me to the next town. I took the exact same test. 100%😁
My driving part of the test.. lol... I did good on everything except....told the man who was testing me.....I don't know how to parallel park. He smiled and said, "I can't either."
So he passed me with a perfect score. I can parallel park now, but it takes me 2 or 3 tries.
Driving can be stressful. When I drive to St. Louis to see my son it's 105 miles. 80% highway and
20% city streets. I'd rather clean 12 toilets than drive in the city. 😳

I love driving in the south! My first car was an Oldsmobile Calais. Pure lemon. Stranded me so many times with the alternator gone that I gave it up and got rid of it. They have moisture problems underneath the hood. For me it only took a few months in the 1980s to get my driver's license in British Columbia. However, now it takes almost 3 years. You got to do a written test. That's to get your "L" or learners. After the end of one year, you can test to get an "N" for new. That last 18 months to 2 years. Then you test again to get your full license. Now I drive a Ford Ranger. I'm a Ford girl, which is common up here. Happy New Year ladies! Hope 2022 is great for you. 💜 PS we have dogs, black bears and deer on our roads.

I started my first, and only, band in 1971. Our first gig was at our high school cafetorium (cafeteria / auditorium) where 10 years earlier Jerry Garcia played his very first live gig. That's when I realized that I DO NOT like being on stage. I quit my own band and became the soundman, which I continued to do for 20 years. The school celebrated it's 100th year anniversary in 2008, and at that time they said they had plans of changing the name of the school because the current mollycoddled "safe space" generation felt "bullied" when rival schools would make fun of the school's name, "Analy High". A bunch of us alumni got together and filed a petition to keep the name. I was so disappointed when I learned that in 2021 they changed the name to "West County High". They are still using the Tiger as their mascot, which I don't feel they deserve. I plan to start a petition to get them to stop using the Tiger, and maybe switch to something like My Little Pony.

Yep, boxes, etc stuff that has fallen off trucks or wind blown from some place happens here too. but the most scary to me is the Amish buggies, love them, but so scary to round a bend and almost hit one. Well girls, I spend one time with each of my girls to teach them to drive, they scared the life out of me so I had to let their dad teach them or one of their older friends LOL. I've had my share of breakdowns on the road, flat tire, busted water hose, brake lines, fuel pumps going out and the alternator. scary stuff for sure especially in bad weather, or at night. This was lots of fun to watch. THanks for sharing.

In fact, it is not at all uncommon when driving behind someone going slower than you want to go that the person you are following will pull over on the shoulder to allow you to pass. Of course, our roads are wider, flatter and straighter in most places than most roads in your area. I never had problems driving or riding on twisting roads in the NC/TN/VA mountains. (originally from Raleigh and spent much time in the mountains for work and pleasure; my Pa was born in Swain County). BTW: I drove in the mountains long before I40 was built.

I grew up on Long Island, NY. We bought our farm here in Ashe County NC in 2011. It was an absolute delight to be here and it reminds me very much of my childhood. The phrases, words and mannerisms here are very similar to Long Island back in the 60s & 70s. Everyone waves as they drive by, everyone has a big garden, puts up food, stops to chat. Round here in Ashe County most folks just do the 2 finger wave and the head bob. Folks pull over to pray if they encounter a funeral procession on the road. They flick their headlights if there is something to watch out for down the road.
I spent the first 58 years of my life on Long Island, and am so very glad to spend the rest of my life here. My soul needs the mountains and if I never left the boundaries of Ashe County again, I'd die happy.

Other than oil and filter changes I'm the worst at not properly maintaining my cars like I should, I guess because of the associated costs, but it's a pay me now or pay me later type thing. I'm hoping y'all have a car trouble free 2022 and safe driving out there!

When I was in high school we didn't have a driving class. Then the DMV had a twenty question test, which was easy. And the driving test was literally just going around the block. 😂 Well, technically it was two blocks. Went down two streets, turned left, then two more lefts and was back to the DMV. LOL
Katie's stories about all her car problems reminds me of one time years ago I was living in Indiana. I had taken a trip home to TN for a visit and got back to Indiana. Next day I went out to my car and I couldn't get it to turn or anything. Turns out my serpentine belt had snapped. Somehow I had made the long eight hour trip all the way back to Indiana with no problems, and the belt didn't break until it was in the garage.
I've seen a meme before about the various waves. Haha

You need to give your daddy an award for all that road service. lol
We were driving from Miami to Naples (across the state of Florida) and had our alternator go out.
Thank goodness the battery was fully charged when we started. We ended up going about 100miles on that charged battery. I got a reworked alternator the next day ... back when working on cars was a LOT easier. It was quite a simple job at that time. These days I look under the hood and want to yell. There is no room at all.
Katie obviously got over the problem of not being able to do anything but hold onto the wheel and focus. I had to laugh watching he talk with that right hand while driving.

I had kin who lived up in the Andrews area. I absolutely hated the road to get there. One lane carved into the side of a mountain. If you came on another car one of you had to back up down a curvy road until you came to an area wide enough to pass. I remember seeing a car in the tree tops, and this was in the days before cell phones so who knows how long you would have to wait for help if that happened.

I feel blessed that my granddad was a good ole boy who used to load me and my cousins into his truck and would drive sometimes randomly around on the country roads. One day when I was a kid we see a house up on a bluff with an old lady sitting on the porch. My granddad stopped the truck, went up to her said hello and had a conversation with her, very Southern. When he came back he told me that the woman he talked to was 'Mama Walton' (actually Mrs. Hamner) featured in the TV series The Waltons, she was older at this point and looked a lot like Grandma Walton. The site is now the Walton's Mountain Museum in Schuyler (Sky-ler) Virginia.

You girls like to know the weather here in Wisconsin it in the middle teens some ice and snow on the road, I got 18f and today on new year day there are people that go out to the lake Michigan and jump in the water to start the new year off right I think but it to cold for me.
