Hi Ewen, I always associate those sun shots, and highlights coming in from the side of the frame - as one of your signatures :-) I also very much agree that if one is intending to make black and white photos, then one should go out and work in black and white whilst capturing the images. The further abstraction that monochrome gives will perhaps take us somewhere we didn't intend to go. We will shoot for the medium, rather than try to make colour images work later in monochrome. Might seem like a small point for some, but it does make a big difference to how we react and what we go looking for.
Love Melbourne. Lived there in 1995-6, Clarence St, then South Yarra before moving to Sydney and back to the UK in 2010. Thanks for posting this, great memories flooding back. Just purchased a used Sigma 10-28mm for my Fujifilm X-E4/S20; I feel like jumping on a plane and going back whilst the UK winter is here.
It's the winter light I love the most! When summer arrives here the weather gets too hot for me, so I'll be off to Arctic Norway and enjoy their winter light for a few weeks :)
I really enjoy your videos. I am curious about what motivates content creators. You speak openly and humbly about your intentions and limitations and I can see your intention in your work. Thank you for showing us the way. I don’t need composition tips or gear advice, just the encouragement to keep shooting what I like.
Thanks Dan :) I came to TH-cam as a means to share my photos. I don't enjoy IG or FB, and even my own website feels like an insufficient medium for the images themselves. But I am also a teacher. It gives meaning to what I do, helping others to find their voice. Teaching is just another way of sharing, and a pleasure shared is a pleasure doubled. I'm still finding my way on the TH-cam journey, but at the very least it's giving me a constructive way to focus my skills and energy. And I get to meet a few nice people in the comments section !
Love these photos, winter light is magic! I would also process the same with black and white, I like to do that when travelling, maybe I've been inspired to do that by you!
Hi Ewan. I live in Chiltern now, and travel down to Melbourne on the first train and catch the last one back, just for street stuff. I really enjoyed your take. You may be aware of Adrian Whear, fellow Melbournite who does wonderful street work. If not, he's worth a look.
Chiltern is such a beautiful part of the state. Must be time for wildflowers up there? I'm a dreadful "street photographer", much better at other things. But have enjoyed just being out on the streets and taking in the winter light :)
@@EwenBell the native pea is out, lovely red, brown, yellow tones. The dry winter has not been our orchid's friend. More wild flowers Oct-Nov. Wattle has been great this year too.
I photograph my paintings outside in the sun and it cant be done in winter cos the light is wrong. Colors don't get right. Like there is something missing in the light.

Not a small point at all. Well said :)
Lovely and stunning collection of B & W photos Ewen. Really love the contrast, light and shadows.
Thanks so much Janny :)

A lot of images take on a whole new significance when stripped of their colour. Loved this.
Thanks Peter. You ever use B+W for your car photography?

I love the shot at 1:33 something about it - just so rich. Beautiful work Ewen.
Thankyou so much for taking the time to say hello. I appreciate it.
