This run has been in the works for months. I've really progressed as a TH-camr since I recorded the footage for this video, so apologies if the pace is a bit too fast for some, but there was _no way_ I was going to re-record the footage for this run. Gen2 will be much smoother, promise :) Enjoy!
Fun fact: because gen 1 is absolutely broken, it is possible to catch every pokemon in one game, including ones that don't exist!
Such a good video, it's a shame it's gotten so few views, that said compare to current works, the jokes could use some time to breath, it's nice to see your improvement.
There is one, maybe 2, gen one games where you can see them all.
When is the gen2 one coming out 😭
Fun fact, ultra balls are WORSE then great balls in gen1, unless it's one of the legendary birds.
also status effects give the most increase in catching chance
"you know they're nothing except energy cards and professor oaks"
i took counter-hit damage from this one
The fact I knew the answer was No before you got started but I still watched anyway is a testament to your entertainment value. Well done.
3rd starters evolutions
Edit: It seems you CAN get them in yellow.
@@mr.cauliflower3536 haven’t finished it yet, but the only one he’ll definitely miss is Mew because he already screwed up the exploit to get it.
There are a handful of ways to glitch mew but it is definitely only glitch
Gets a Butterfree, which is one of the most well known Flying/Bug types for the Rock type gym
" Ah yes, a psychic type. "
Yeah, eveeryone knows that Venomoth is the gen 1 flying/psychic.
@@348joey it's not flying. It's bug poison
Always felt weird that Blaine didn't have a magmar considering yellow is meant to be closer to the anime
I think yellow version was made before they got to Blaine in the anime if I remember right.
"Where are the adults?" Are you sure you want to open that can of poketheory madness?
Let's just say, one of the few adults in the game an old gentleman in lt. Surge tells you about lt. Surge saving his life in the war. (Or that was gen2 and surge says his pokemon saved his bacon in the war) and as it says THE war...
Honestly lt. Surge is more creepypasta than us murdering Ass's ratticate
“Is that a level 50 abra? Why would you do that” has me rolling
In gen 2, it'd learn moves faster that way.
7:24 Wait until you find the ones that consider some of those to be the same thing. There's a book in Diamond and Pearl all about it (though not the remakes).
If you ever feel like redoing this particular challenge, Firered and Leafgreen are a bit better for seeing everything (there's a postgame, and there's at least one dude with a Porygon on his team).
And then after going through Bill's computer: "Hey guys, did you know that in terms of male human and female pokemon-"
I believe the fossil in Fuchsia is always the opposite to the one you pick in the cave.
For anyone wondering, the whole "you missed the Pokémon" thing is the game's way of telling you "you have a very low chance at catching it with this pokeball at this HP". It's still possible, just highly unlikely.
Nerdy details below:
First off, if you don't catch it outright, the game has to check how many times the ball should shale. From Bulbapedia: "The number of times a Poké Ball shakes before failing to catch a Pokémon is a rough approximation of the Pokémon's catch odds." When you first throw the ball, assuming it's not a masterball (which contrary to popular belief is NOT affected by the 1/256 glitch), the game does the following to determine if you catch it:
Generate a random number, N, depending on the type of ball used. For a standard pokeball, this number is between 0-255 (inclusive I believe), 0-200 for a great ball, and for a safari or ultra ball (same catch rate) 0-150
The Pokémon is caught if it is asleep or frozen and N is less than 25 or it is paralyzed, burned, or poisoned and N is less than 12.
Otherwise, if N minus the status threshold (above) is greater than the Pokémon's catch rate, the Pokémon breaks free.
If not, generate a random value, M, between 0 and 255.
Then calculate F (I promise this is all relevant) F = ((max HP x 255 x 4) / (current HP x ball)) where the value of Ball is 8 if a Great Ball is used or 12 otherwise. The minimum value of F is 1 and its maximum value is 255.
If F is greater than or equal to M, the Pokémon is caught. Otherwise, the Pokémon breaks free.
****If the Pokémon broke free, the steps below are performed to determine how many times the ball will shake.**** (this is the important bit)
Calculate D. D = ((catch rate x 100) / ball) where the value of ball is 255 for the Poké Ball, 200 for the Great Ball, or 150 for other balls.
If D is greater than or equal to 256, the ball shakes three times before the Pokémon breaks free.
Otherwise, calculate X. X = (((D x F) / 255) + S) where S is 10 if the Pokémon is asleep or frozen, 5 if it is paralyzed, poisoned, or burned, or 0 otherwise.
****If X < 10 the ball misses the Pokémon completely.**** (what happened here)
If X is between 9 and 30 (exclusive) the ball shakes once before the Pokémon breaks free.
If X is between 29 and 70 (exclusive) the ball shakes twice before the Pokémon breaks free.
Otherwise, the ball shakes three times before the Pokémon breaks free.
TL;DR
Generate a couple random numbers, check the 'mon's HP, status, and the ball used, if not caught, the number of shakes indicates how likely the catch is. If you miss the 'mon entirely, your chance is low but never 0. and if you missed it once, didn't lower it's HP, give it a status condition, or change balls, and it actually hits the 'mon instead of missing, you know for a fact you caught it.
Ok
It will be a no. The other fossil and the third Starter can't be seen, to my childhood-playing knowledge. Nor can Mew without glitching. Granted, I played Blue, but Yellow didn't change that much.
well, since you can get all 3 starters in yellow, there's more you can see than in Red Blue or Green (if you can read/play in Japanese, and import a copy), and with just one specific glitch, not just seeing, but catching em all becomes possible, even without trading...which honestly is where I thought this vid was gonna go...but nope, he just quit at the glitchless limit
Don't forget Golem. I couldn't think of a single trainer that had one in Red, Blue or Yellow, and you can't evolve Graveler without trading. Turns out you can trade a Kadabra for a Graveler in Green, though. But I don't think you could see one with any of the others.
You and your rival aren't the only ones with starters, so even in Blue version you will have them too.
5:26 a small correction, gen 1 isn’t just poorly balanced, it’s poorly coded too!
Just discovered this is your only Pokemon Video on this Channel. I would love to see some more Pokemon Challenge Runs hope you do some in the future
With older games like this, it's really important for video quality to use integer scaling on the video footage. You see how when Gary is standing and facing north, like at 4:18, the top row of pixels representing his hair are about double the size of the row beneath it? Or how that happens with the font? Proper integer scaling will prevent that from happening and give you nice, beautiful, and most importantly, *square* pixels, across *all* rows and columns of your video. The Gameboy (and Color) have a resolution of 160x144. Proper integer scale would multiply both values by the same number - no decimal places allowed. x2: 320x288. x4: 640x576. x8: 1280x1152. And so on. I know the video is almost a year old, but it showed up recently in my feed, so I figured I'd watch it, and noticed this glaring issue.
According to a very fun speedrun I watched you can catch all of them but only if you reprogram reality itself using your item bag to send yourself to the shadow realm. Very fun video
Yay a pokemon challenge! Now that I think about it, there still are a lot of games and challenges to do, nice video!
Hoping to see a Gen 2 of this series! Your commentary makes it so much better plus I don't have to test it out myself! Lol
Friendly reminder that red ( aka lemon) went to go on top of a mountain waiting for a great challenger for god knows how long, you are just retelling his tragic backstory
You can see more if you let yourself use loopholes:
- Kabutops fossil in the museum
- Acknowledgement of Mew's existence in the journals on Cinnabar
- Someone's Graveler evolves in the Celadon Dept Store (doesn't mention the name Golem)
Kabutops/Omastar should probably count anyway as it's possible to own both with one game, just not on the same save file
Pinsir/Scyther/Magmar/Electabuzz (2 of the 4) are the only Pokemon who aren't mentioned at all
Traces of Scyther:
Ninja dialogue in Fuchsia Gym
Double Team TM in Safari Zone
"Tall grass" sign in Safari Zone
Traces of Electabuzz:
Eats electricity, so might have been the cause of the Power Plant shutting down
Zapdos appears during thunderstorms, or causes them, which could cause Electabuzz to gather
If Rock Tunnel had electric lighting, Electabuzz could have caused the black out
The Pokemaniac outside the Power Plant says he has more rare Pokemon at home
Traces of Magmar:
The Volcanobadge, Magmar are born in volcanoes
(so in Blue and Yellow you can "see" 151)
There's nothing for Pinsir, the closest is Krabby/Kingler (Kingler is the "pincer" Pokemon), and a Bug Catcher talking about his "super bug Pokemon", but they're Caterpie, Weedle and Venonat
Also the "Raichu that went and evolved" implies a new Pokemon, bringing you closer to 151 or up to 152
btw it is known how to get mew, for years now. granted it is a glitch, but you can catch omastar, magmar and electabuzz with the same trick
I only now realize that the legendary birds end in uno, dos, tres.
16:30 the quizzes don’t actually matter, you can battle the trainers regardless of your answers.
Where are the adults?!
Thanks for the laughs mate, I wasn't sure what to think when I saw you moved over to Pokemon, but I can say with certainty that I'm glad you did!
Glad you enjoyed it! By no means am I switching entirely over to Pokemon, but this has been in the backlogs (ba-dum-tisss) for a while now and I figured it was time to actually live up to my namesake.
@@TheBacklogs I'm glad it's not JUST Pokemon, but I'm also enjoying the variety. Keep those backlogs(and delightfully lame puns) coming!
You picked up the right fossil! Kabuto > Omanyte.

All members of team rocket must own a rat and or bat pokemon.
Lemon: we may have a problem.
Me: you've had a Pikachu this entire run, I think that's close enough. I mean team rocket is always trying to get there hands on one.
I think it's actually possible to not only see but actually CATCH all pokemon in gen 1 without trading with other versions but you need to heavily abuse a particular glitch to do it
The one where you faint from poison exactly infront of the weedle trainer in veridian forest?
@@Metalhammer1993 well, there are other, easier ways to trigger it, but yes...that glitch
personally, I prefer the "long range trainer" + teleport/fly method. because in gen 1 trainers always load in facing down, any trainer that agros from the far side of the screen (and doesn't innately face down anyways) loses a frame before they can hail you, it then merely takes one buffer-able input to open the menu, then you disappear before their eyes, and it works easy every time...as opposed to the poison method and dying with perfect step count...though you can't use my preferred method until after mt moon afaik, cause that's earliest abra access without trading...and you gotta be sure to NOT beat all the viable trainers, at least until you are done getting all you want from the glitch...
Why not just glitch the pokedex so it says you saw everything? Because that'd be less fun. Same w Mew glitch, imo.
Recently discovered this channel and I was *SO* excited to see a Pokémon video here too! I'd love to see other generations, maybe the same challenge or maybe some other idea! Great work!
Not the Porygon in the trash. I audibly cackled.
The pokemon bank was a great idea. You could put pokemon from one game into the bank and then download them into another in order to get all the ones you wanted. Still needed to trade to get the evolutions though.
Still wainting for that: Catch ALL Pokemon Video
just discoverd your awesome videos. Love them. Keep up to awesome work
If this were a guide, this would be 100% more usefull, mainly on gen iv and up, since you can trade any mon on gts if you've at least seen them, which lets you complete your caught dex if you've at least seen every mon. Also, those games gift you for seeing every mon.
I came here to pay my respects to this amazing pokemon veteran. Thank you for your service The Backlogs.
12:50 the pervy grandpa at 69 pokemons... that is one nice coincidence
I was born shortly after the creation of Pokémon and remember wanting everything Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh. I loved more dragons in Yu-Gi-Oh but thought Pokémon more fun. I still have my Blue and Pikachu Yellow.
Fun fact (that most people probably already know): Pokémon yellow is NOT the "upgraded" edition of Red and Blue like Crystal or Emerald were for their duos, but rather it's an anime friendly edition of Pokémon Red/Blue. Since the game came before the anime, the game doesn't actually have any connection to it. The protagonist of the first gen is not Ash (or Satoshi in Japanese), it's Red. Team Rocket is not 2 losers and their Meowth, it's a criminal organization with multiple members.
However, between the huge success of the anime and the anime coming to the West before the games, GameFreaks decided to release a remake of Red and Blue based on the anime that was based on the two original games. Simply because it came out slightly later, Yellow has slightly superior coding and more colour, making it technically the superior version.
To be fair team rocket in the anime isn't just two losers and a meowth either, those two are the ones you see way more often than the rest but Giovanni is still there and everyone else in the team thinks Jessie and James are weird.
I knew the ones he couldn't get before clicking but I still enjoy the videos. Keep em coming Lemon!
I would point out that bill surge Giovanni, Sabrina, koga, the warden of the safari zone, Blane, and the elite four are all adults. Not to mention all of the nurse joys
man all these old model like golbats, brings back memories
"how did we grow up to be normal?"
making a lot of assumptions there.
There IS a way to get those last five--at least theoretically--but from what I know it's unreliable and requires exploiting glitches.
Using the Nugget Bridge glitch, you can set-up for Mew and if it's possible to manipulate the Viridian Forest glitch, it'd be theoretically possible to set-up for the other four. That's why I say it's unreliable. From what I know, it's seemingly random (There must be some rhyme or reason to it, but I've seen people get Mew from the glitch, and other high-leveled random Pokemon, and I got a Lv 1 Slowbro when I showed it off).
You can actually encounter a Pidgeotto in Viridian Forest! It's yellow only though.
I've watched every one of your videos but this one, what where why how have i not seen this one.
I wouldn't have blamed you at all for using the Mew Glitch to get the last 5. But still, the fact that you could get all but 5 solo is impressive in its own right!
Using the nugget bridge glitch you can catch or see the missing ones
Your note about butterfree is a misinterpretation of mechanics. Bug pokemon are supposed to evolve quickly, they can overcome their opponents by levelling up faster. But that comes at a price: bugs mostly are worthless by mid game. Once their competition hits their second/third evolution the stat gap is massive. Bug.pokemon are almost always in the first forest so you can grind out an overwhelmer for the first gym or two. But by three most bugs are falling behind. Gen 4 begins to make serious changes to the core tropes of early pokemon but for those first three heracross is practically the only late game viable bug
@@HarryGreenMathematician Pinsir has no bug type moves as they don't exist. Until gen 4. Ditto Scyther. That's speed glitch Crit viable on slash, not viable as a BUG type.
@@HarryGreenMathematician okay give me Elite four Pinsir or Scyther movesets. Bug type moves? No? Then my point stands daddy-o
@@HarryGreenMathematician now do my eyes decieve me, or are there no bug type moves? It would appear that those movesets could be wielded by better stated pokemon, Rendering both mons unviable. Better luck next time!
@@HarryGreenMathematician viable bug type. That's the phrase you're arguing semantics on. Your point about viability has nothing to do with my point about the irrellevant nature of the type. But we can keep this up all night, Satan knows there's nothing better to do
The fact that you had Pikachu in your party the entire time, but still had to grind it up to level 30 after having become the champion is utterly baffling to me as someone who levels my party semi-evenly even when I'm trying to just rush through things. Though I should have expected it when you got to the water gym and used Butterfree instead of the electric pokemon you started with.
I remember when I used to enter local bowling tournaments to win free card packs.
You don't need flash or arguably the bike.
For flash you just talk to pikachu and they will light up the cave for you. For the bike it's more of a grey area there's a glitch where you keep walking left and triggering the text box and eventually the guard will let you pass. This brings up questions about what counts though. There's a glitch in the opening sequence where the nidorino has a nindrina cry so you can't play gen 1 glitchless it's literally impossible the game is that broken but it is so broken you can easily catch/see all the pokemon and then some using the long range trainer glitch. I don't think it should count because these glitches where found years later but it's an interesting concept. There's a similar glitch in gen 2 as well but that involves preforming ACE in the PC
7:47 Something something compatibility something something Vaporeon
23:56 Sad the upcoming trainer is the one you normally use fly before he runs at you so you can corrupt game memory to catch mew from another nearby trainer or grass patch :(
Mission failed, we'll get em next time
You can get mew by doing some glitches at the very beginning of the game durning the Nugget bridge you gotta fight one of the trainers with slowbro growl at it 6 times and do some
Other shit but a level 1 mew would appear
nice content as always ! didn't even watch the whole thing but it's already gold(enwine) :3
The rules don't state no glitches. Therefore, you can actually catch 'em all.
My thoughts exactly, I was a bit disappointed that he didn't use glitches to find the remaining pokrmon, or at least mention it would be possible. I guess he doesn't know about them?
That flashback hits so hard as a card collector
I know I'm commenting on a very old video here, but I'm honestly surprised you didn't use glitches to get all the Pokemon. By the way, you could have trained Pikachu faster by repeatedly using items with no effect on it. It doesn't consume the item and it still raises friendship
Great stuff!
ah yes, my favorite pokemon, the family dog
Genuinely baffling that Golem doesn't exist at all in the game, even with a trainer, unless you trade. I did wonder which Pokemon required you to actually do something for ages so thanks for answering the question :)
Fun fact: with the mew glitch, you can easily catch them all with a single game. Because why buy another game and gameboy, or a cheating device, when the game is so broken it comes with what’s basically a built in, unintentional, modding tool.
Actually, you could see Mew via some glitch. A bunch of kids at school were doing it.
Poke-PTSD is the real thing, and there were no shinies in Gen 1.
Normal? Ha! We don't do normal around here!
You could’ve add kabutops at the museum in brooks town
Whatever game he is playing, lemon has traumatic Events for every one of them😂
The very best tourist like no one every was
"Catch them all!"
If you buy every game twice and live in a country where you can attend all time sensitive events
The best part is that most of the fans don't even realize they're being treated like mobile players, no wait, mobile games usually use microtransactions instead of making you buy the same game twice, Game Freak is even worse
Whether you pick red, blue or yellow, no you cant see them all. No alt fossil or Golem for example
Fun fact, ultra balls are WORSE then great balls, unless it's one of the legendary birds.
is anyone gonna tell him butterfree is only bug/flying and not psychic, or is he gonna figure it out himself?
...welp. That's emotionally upsetting.
Oh gods he didn't find it out himself.
Oh my word thank you, I was getting very very worried scrolling through the comments and not seeing a single person mention the fact that he picked a Pokémon 4x weak to rock to beat the rock type gym and called it psychic. I thought for sure it was an April fools joke for a moment there but then I saw that I was very wrong.
It would be fun to see you return to Pokémon.

Fun fact pikachu has a third evolution that was never coded in the game but was mentioned in red & blue
Marill perhaps? I know that was always the playground rumor growing up
@@TheBacklogs dunno the person who was doing the art didn't have time to code it and draw it in. But after you trade him a raichu he talks about how it evolved and is doing well. (The guy is in the lab on cinnabar Island if you want to check it out.)

I lost it at "rocket youth"
Hoping you will do Pokémon Crystal "See them all", enjoyed the video nonetheless.
Is no one going to comment about how this madlad caught Zapdos with a Pokeball?
I know this is a year late, but there is an in-game way to obtain mew. so, technically, you were four short!
This man did yellow!!!
You can just fight the dudes at Blane's gym, answering the question right or not. You just gotta talk to them. I used to answer em all correctly for shits and giggles and fight for the exp.
That’s only in Red/Blue. They changed it in Yellow.
Still waiting for more of your videos in this series
Are you still planning to do gen 2?
Yup!
If you don't mind using glitches you might as well use the Trainer Fly glitch
Not having a link cable or friends is why I HATE trade evolutions like Gengar.
Jelly donuts!
1:33 wow I wonder how they got shinies in Gen 1
Unless you meant *FOIL* cards lol
I need an adult.
not half bad, now do all shinies
Why did this hidden gem suddenly appear in my feed!?
