This is rightly considered a classic live album. This is early Rush in all their ragged, rocking glory. It was the jumping off point into an incredible run for them over the next decade.
Hey neighbor, your joyous reaction when Neil started that drum solo was priceless. I had pretty much the same reaction 48 years ago when I first heard this album. It started my love of Rush. Keep it coming!
My first ever Rush album... 1976. What a joyous, life changing discovery that was! What I owe them, and particularly Neil for his lyrics, is difficult to quantify.
@@williamdemerchant7295 - I suppose 2112 was, technically, my first album; but that was just a tape made from a friend's album, earlier that year. ATWAS was my first purchase. I think I bought FBN and COS, before 2112... once the constant rewinds on 'Soliloquy' eventually ruined that tape! 😊
Rush was the best live show you could ever see. They toured endlessly for years and they honed their skills. I saw them 7 times and they never dissapoointed.
"I'm gonna stop that there" .. nooooooooo!!! .. you have to get to the part where you hear "wow, wow, what a show, man oh man, well, I guess that's it" ... FYI, that was Geddy's voice at the end .. another comic relief bit .. hahaha .. classic RUSH !!!
When I was a young teenager, that was the first album I ever bought in my life. It had just been released. I was so impressed that I went out and bought, Caress Of Steel, a week later. I am 63 years old now, and there's not a day that goes by I don't listen to some Rush. I only bought the album because I loved the picture of the drum kit. I thought to myself, from the looks of the picture, these guys probably rock. I was right.
The only album I ever bought based just on the cover (having never heard the music) was Budgie Bandolier. It's got this very cool cover of three armed budgies (parakeets) on horseback. It was in a used record store for a dollar. I thought 'what do I have to lose, the cover is worth a dollar'. It was an amazing album and I probably played it 1000 times, was so good. Particularly Who Do You Want For Love and Napoleon Bona Part 1 and 2. It's a 3 piece like Rush, from Wales. The drummer and bass player are solid musicians, the guitarist is a great rhythm guitarist but not the best soloist. The singer Burke Shelley (a really odd dude IRL) has a voice very similar to Geddy's just with a little more 'edge'. They arent nearly as good as Rush, but it's worth a listen for sure. Isnt it great when you take a chance on something like that and it pays off?

My son and I were in Toronto last summer and we made a point of going to Massey Hall. I said to my son "So this is where one of the greatest live albums ever made took place"....... And I believe this was the 3rd nite, the boy's were pissed on what they heard the previous 2 nites recorded, so they left us with this one, thanks guys, your legacy will never die.
Ah, early days, at their bombastic best. I like how they slipped into Finding My Way, and then seamlessly moving back to Working Man to finish the song [after Neil's drum solo, of course]. And this is a more accurate rendition of Working Man, with respect to the studio album. Other, more recent, live cuts play with it a little more. but this one preserves the harder, dirtier sound. Good stuff, as always :)
This was the first Rush album I bought on my 16th birthday in early December 1976. I walked into my local record store with a £5 record token planning to buy a Queen album, but the Q section was near the R section and that album cover caught my eye and something made me buy it. I've been a Rush fan ever since. A few weeks later I got another record token for Christmas and bought 2112. Hard to believe it was almost 50 years ago as it seems like yesterday. I still have both albums today.
I was eleven and I was bragging to my buds about this great three-man group called The Police. My bud put this album on the record play and handed me the cover and then inserts. This album laid the foundation for the Rush fan to experience the vast range of talent that the group has. After about an hour and a half of listing to the albums, my life as I knew it as an eleven-year-old was never going to be the same.
In 1971 Geddy and Alex stood in line to see YES at Massey Hall in Toronto. Geddy also played the bass, in place of Chris Squire who passed in 15, for YES'S induction to the RRHF. Roundabout off the Fragile album is a peach 🍁🎶🍁
That is BY FAR, the best version of working man ever! Perhaps it's my age, perhaps what I remember in my youth. However, the way the drums were mic'ed up, the way Neil laid into his toms then, I had forgotten how much better this sounded than the later versions. My humble opinion anyway...
Wow! Thank you. What an amazing performance by young Lerxst, Dirk and Pratt! 😁😁😁 Although a tiny bit before my time, I always admired their early works.
This 1st live album showcased a real raw sound which I think was very faithful to early Rush. By the time they released their next live album 'Exit....Stage Left' in 1981 they had released a further 4 studio albums & their sound had grown with the addition of synths. 'Exit' if anything was 'over-produced' & Geddy even stated that some imperfections were re-recorded in the studio. Roll on another 4 studio albums & their 3rd live album 'A Show of Hands' was released in 1988. Geddy has said that with that release they had finally got the balance right in terms of a faithful reproduction of a live Rush performance. Love your reactions Red xx ( I'd take it as a compliment that Rush named 4 songs in anticipation of your TH-cam channel...Red Barchetta, Red Sector A, Red Lenses & Red Tide 😁xx)
I remember when I bought this record, yes….record😊, and playing this track over and over again to learn the guitar part! 🙂 When you had that reaction to Geddy’s scream at the song transition is exactly like mine in 1976 when I first listened to this album. That was superb!! It gave me a feeling for some reason of bands like UFO and Thin Lizzy, it might be the guitar tone, there's someone else too but it won't come to me.
Rush had toured with UFO.
@@williamdemerchant7295 Oh really? I didn't know that.
@@mattmid7012 They toured together in 1977. Rush was the headliner in North America.
