clpsheldon.page.link/x3kb In this tutorial i have explained briefly what is 1.54 in concrete while analyzing the dry volume and wet volume of concrete
This video is about the conversion factor 1.54 used to calculate the dry volume of concrete mixture. i.e, to convert wet volume of concrete to dry volume, we multiply the wet volume by a factor 1.54.
The main concept is that, on addition of water the particles of dry concrete mixture slide over one another due to the loss of friction between particles as the water acts as a lubricant between the particles resulting in readjustment of particles in a closely packed pattern reducing the volume occupied by the voids and hence reducing the volume of concrete mass.
The percentage of voids due to fine aggregate present in concrete is 20% and the percentage of voids due to course aggregate is 32 to 34% summing upto a total of 52 to 54%. Therefore we need an extra 54% dry concrete mixture for casting any wet volume of concrete.
Moreover it has been seen that the dry volume of concrete required to obtain 1m³ of wet mass is 1.54m³ of dry concrete. This is where we get the conversion factor.
So to obtain 1m³ of wet concrete we need to have 1.54m³ of dry concrete mixture available.

FYI… you've got a typo. It should be "coarse" aggregate. :-)

Hello Sir. Does the 1.54 factor include wastage incurred during construction ? If No, what percentage / factor should we include for wastage ? Thank you in advance

Important when placing concrete order. Use dry volume for orders. Besides, don't forget to subtract off reinforcing volume from dry concrete volume before placing your order.

Does the 1.54 affects the course aggregates ( stone). I don't think it should become stones don't shrink when water is poured on it.

Well said!!!! I too have the same opinion. The correction factor 1.54 is applicable only for cement & Sand. To counteract the 30% voids between aggregate, we should add 30% more sand

Also, since we know the weight per volume of dry, hardened cement, we can estimate the total weight of the dry ingredients of the concrete too.

but we will have a dry volume at the end, so we need to calculate the wet volume. then volume of concrete = dry V / 1.54

plz clarify me one thing, as i am bit confused regarding the wet volume concept. will the wet volume vary according to the size of slab ? suppose if a slab has a volume of (150x100x0.33)=4950cft then the wet volume would also be same as the volume of slab which came out to be 4950 cft ? plz answer.Thank you. Love from pakistan

My doubt is sir... To get get dry volume of concrete in cubic meter 1.54 is multiplied with wet volume. If in case wet volume is in cubic feet what is multiplication constant sir

Conversion factor is independent of the unit in which volume is considered.... We can use 1.54 in either cases.👍🏻

Ye calculation meri samjh me ni aata sala ...
    1+54/100*1
Yaha 1+ wet volume hai 54% hai fir multiply kiya 1 se ye 1 kya hai 😢
