Eleiko IPF Powerlifting Training Bar - $1100 Bargain?

  • Today we take a look at the newly announced Eleiko IPF Powerlifting Training Bar, which I've been lucky enough to have been testing out the past 9 months or so. Eleiko is viewed as the premium equipment manufacturer in powerlifting and weightlifting and boy do these prices reflect it. However, is it possible that this $1100 barbell can actually be considered a bargain? Let's take a look.

The graphite infusion bushings are a pretty solid choice here. Graphite being a lubricant is exposed over time as the bushing wears. That might sound a little scary. " You mean as my bushing has to get worn and loose in order to be lubricated !! " This is somewhat truth but in this application, those bushing wil likelyl out last bearings.
Many motors now use bushing infusion with various lubricants. They last years at high rpms and under high torque. Odds are your dishwasher motor, fan on your hvac unit, and most other medium to small applications will have them.
Bearing are a more mechanical method of friction reduction, meaning they have moving parts. Bushing like these have no moving parts, so over time, they are affected less. The downside to the bushings is they they can have a tendency to crack. This is due to the hardness required of the bushing and the fact that (on a microscopic scale) the structure is infusion with the lubricant making it slightly more prone to cracking. This is especially true of cheap bushing manufacturered overseas. The infusion quality can leave areas when the lubricant has a different density through the material, leading to weak areas sustainable to cracking.
I mention this because it can be a problem with bushings and I am assuming someone will mention it somewhere 🤔 😉
I dont see cracking or split bushing on this bar as being a problem. You almost always see that in small bushings and not in larger bushings, which this bar would have. The extra material in a larger bushing helps give strength to any small area sustainable to forming a crack. A 1500lb rating may seem huge but you are going to have at least 4 bushing here and each of those bushing would be rated (I am assuming a few things here) at 650 to 800lb each. They could be rated for much more but in the least the bushings are 3600lb capable.
If I had a choice between bearing or bushings on a bar like this... I would go bushings every time. -David

I have the comp bar and love it.
I just have rogue collars on it all the time to bring the plates out from the rack.
    I also have the Ok
Ohio power bar and can honestly say I found it pretty much as good as the Eleiko.
I know a rep and got the Eleiko with 30% off and then got the Vat back through a business, so 50% off.
Also got plates and a bench so by the time I was finished the bar was pretty much free.
I also hate endcaps, love the look of the end of an Eleiko bar.

We are so spoiled these days. Back in the 80s when I started, a York bar was the standard good bar. They all had a nice patina of old rust and the knurling was well worn. Your main concern was finding one that was straight. We still got big and the hardcore energy was great.

I am on the waitlist at American Barbell for their chewy 25 TPI bar. I think their fit and finish of the bar, how it is shipped, etc. is one of the best out there. I knew about the 20 TPI but once I found out about the 25 I asked Shea to cancel the quote. It’s about $500 less than the Eleiko too. I know that it’s “Eleiko” and they are the best when it comes to Olympic bars. Might get one of those….if they ever decide to go stainless on them. Not sure why but I’ve gotten to where I thumb my nose at a chrome coating on the shaft. Anybody else that way or is it just me. It just seems like a substandard product these days.

The word training with the $1100 is what scared me initially... I immediately thought of their weightlifting aluminum technique bars which are light to practice movements... Elieko is pricy but $1100 is not crazy for them especially for a stainless steel version that is better than the competition version for that reason... Wise choice on the SS version, make your own stickers for peace of mind if you are not hosting meets but still really wanted the competition version.
I have a weightlifting russian style bar called the power lock which with the special collars might be the most expensive bar they made and it's not stainless either.. I got it used for way less... It is the best weightlifting bar I've ever used and the bumpers are locked super securely because of the design. Yes it's completely overkill but clearly their is a market for elieko and premium bars or they would not exist. It's better made than any other bar I own and I have multiple rogue bars and two ivanko barbells in the stable at the moment.

Agreed, I think the sweet spot for this bar is those who actively lift in the IPF and want to emulate the experience, or just like having higher end brands/items. It's a great bar, but you could get 2 great bars for this price.

eleiko competition "bare" isnt really bare steel even tho eleiko themself label it as bare steel (which is weird that premium company with such high prices doesnt tell you this when you spend that kind of money for barbell.. whatever).. its mixed with a very little bit of chromium but not enough to be stainless, and it rusts pretty badly.. and also raises price to the nonsense levels..
