  • Readers and listeners have a mixed feeling about authors narrating their own books, and for good reason. An audiobook is not just a recording of someone reading a book. It is a performance and artform in its own right. When I decided to create my audiobook, I wanted a quality product, so I did the work. You can create a stellar audiobook too if you’re willing to put in the effort and time. Here’s how I did it.

    Question please.
How to format character thouhts in 3rd person past tense?
Some people say write it in italocs, 1st person snd present tense. Some say keep it in 3rd person no italics with or wothout the filter word "he thought". I have no idea what to do. Please can you help?

There is no hard and fast rule. However, if it is a direct thought, meaning your character is actively thinking that thought, you either need the tag "he thought" or italics or some other indication that it is a direct thought. And in this case you would use first person present tense.
If it is an indirect thought, then you use whatever point of of view and tense you're using for your book and no "he thought" or italics. Here's an example:
What the heck am I supposed to say, he thought.
What the heck am I supposed to say? (in italics)
He tried to come up with something to say. (no italics)
