I don’t know, if they ever make them practical enough and get the price down enough for the average to moderately rich person I could see a lot of people buy these instead of cars. I know I would. Most of my life is pretty local so as long as it isn’t storming this is safer and more practical for me in my average life then a car would ever be. Wouldn’t need to worry about traffic or parking or downed roads (or roads at all really) or other drivers (seriously half of them down here drive like they have a death wish and want to take anyone they can with them.)… Just get dressed, throw on the rig and go wherever you need to without obstruction.

The problem I can see, besides the use of arms, is once they're airborne, they're highly vulnerable. Unless it's really, **REALLY** fast, if someone can get a bead on them, they could end up shot before they escape. And, of course, that thing is LOUD. So stealth is going to be a problem.

I wouldn't bring it for a stealth mission (or if I did, it'd be for the exfiltration phase if it's honestly the best option for the context). Stick to rope for that.
I'm just imagining what the Ukraine army could do with this thing if it magically had another 30 years of development in so far as combined arms urban warfare is concerned. I doubt noise is a factor given the backdrop of tanks and artillery.
I'm not imagining everyone equipped with these things. Just one team (per the many of other specialists participating in the battle) that knows what they're doing, repositioning as needed as the already noisy battle develops to provide a more mobile overwatch.
Even then, it'd just be an option. No reason for it not to be viable however.

I see the main possible use of this is scaling rough terrain/obstacles quickly, such as simply getting on to the roof of a house or onto a short rocky ridge line. Doesn't need to have extended flight time (although the more the better), it just needs to let you basically hop up onto something quickly that you otherwise could not do without ladders, grappling hooks, etc. Also due to the noise it should probably be used only in an active zone where your presence is already known or expected.

If you really want to get into the details of it, these devices do not fulfill any role not already occupied by cheaper, safer, more effective equipment.
For the outlined suggestion of rapidly traversing difficult terrain, any crew cabin helicopter or other VTAL will do the job a whole lot better, and you'd know what I mean if you've ever watched the 101st run a practice air assault. And if you're suggesting that they'd need to do that on a patrol, or on the fly in combat, then that's a misunderstanding of how combat and patrolling works. If your team comes across difficult terrain like that and didn't know about it well enough in advance to already be going there in a bird, then you slept through the briefing and have failed as a leader.

    • @kn1ght722
      @kn1ght722 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@kadewiedeman3127 Agreed, however I'm just thinking from "what if" scenarios where say you could not use a helicopter (maybe the airspace isn't clear) but a height advantage is known to exist that you still wish to utilize. A jetpack like this might just be the answer. But of course like you said most operations are planned in advance and another solution is probably safer. Still a neat idea that might one day aid in actual situations (probably after the tech is much more refined).

Idk if they’ll use AA missiles on them since small arms fire can eliminate the target since there’s no armor, also we don’t know how well the jet packs itself hold up against small arms fire.
I’d imagine even a 9mm will pose a danger to its structural integrity. Plus how difficult is it to repair? If you need extra chips and boards and wires on you at all times for repairs then… it adds extra weight onto the soldier which makes it very dangerous.
But as technology improves who knows, maybe this is the first step of military jet pack usage.
But then again in WW2 they have already done personal helicopters and others along those lines, conventional way to carry troops offers the most protection for our troops so far.
So we can all hope it’ll get used, but I know what we all hope for are our soldiers coming home safe

I think the best use of this will come from the ability to rapidly attain elevation, like scaling a building for a sniper and / or being able to relocate quickly over large distances. Plus you don't have to worry about terrain or chokepoints if you can just gly over them or flank them from behind. The pinnacle of this tech will most likely be achieved when it is upgraded to be hands free. Additionally, troops can theoretically deploy from airplanes without parachutes or fly deep behind enemy lines for insertion.

Yeah, I don't really see how this makes any practical sense. Sure soldiers can fly around and whatnot, but there are so many more practical, better ways for insertion and extraction. Like parachuting and helicopters. This is a big hunk of junk on your back. It's really heavy, bulky and noisy. Soldiers land and then they have to carry this thing around for a good hour or so. You can't just "leave it" because it'll probably be stolen by enemies or destroyed and it's too expensive. You have to carry huge load the entire time (it also limits how much weapons and ammo you can carry).
It can probably be effective in the navy, in some short range scouting or when they need to quickly board another boat/ship.

Not with all the anti aircraft tech we already have that would just lock on to these slow ass things an knock ‘em dead in seconds. This is the stupidest idea I’ve seen from the military in modern day given everything that can very easily counter this. It’s cool, it’s flashy, it’s fun. I’d use it for fun. But no way in hell would I go, let alone order a whole squad to use these things in active duty. I’d laugh my ass off and start using them as aerial target practice if I was the enemy and saw, or heard, a squad of soldiers flying towards us on the battlefield with these bulky ass slow things lol. 😂

But as with most new tech ideas, that journey of a thousand steps always starts with the first one. All the best developing this further.

In the near future, AI will handle the jets based on the demands. We nearly have the technology already, in cars and drones. We have robots that can react fast enough to the sound of weaponry that they can both dodge and deflect enemy fire faster than the human brain can process. In the near future, we will have no need for these humans to be in direct combat, but will likely use these kinds of things to rescue/escape/reposition people.

More or less the moment you hear one of these you'll be ready to ambush the operator of the jetpack. and the operator will never be able to return fire while his jets are in use. He/She must be able to have some means of self defense while mobile or else using this in combat is impossible. not to mention giving away your position.

Interesting and liking the development, many people raise noise concerns but it must be kept in mind that tanks, helicopters, apcs etc are also pretty noisy but they get the job done when used in their correct roles. I can see that if they opt to develop it further the jetpacks can have uses, for example I think they could be useful in scaling rocky mountainous terrain, say like quickly getting troops into blocking/vantage points during ongoing battle, where noise is not a concern and rather speed of maneuverability to outflank enemies is of vital importance. Sure drones can do a lot of tasks but when you have situations where you need boots on the ground these may come in handy.

As long as you were never jetting into hostile situations it could be useful. A squad of men could conceivably move more rapidly, or up steep surfaces, or over water. Land away from combat, dismount and then deploy. Go into hostile areas, a stray bullet could end you quickly, and the noise would alert the enemy. Tanks and aircraft make noise too, but they have significant armor or significant weapon systems or superior speed to stay alive longer. One bullet isn't likely to end their flight spectacularly.
