The struggle to move our political systems away from the manifestations of authoritarianism to liberty has been hard and long. Although we have seen the downfall of many authoritarian states and leaders, the continue to exist despite the negativity most people feel towards them.
However, like most things authoritarians are not simple. The complexity of what they advocate for differs on many political, social and psychological views. The video delves into their personality, social attitudes and how they use aggression and nationalism to their advantage.
Authoritarians will always be present in society, so an understanding of their variations is important. Not all authoritarians are trying to dismantle democracy, but still try to enforce others to their will.

    Perspective is everything.
I am an authoritarian and one example which should be compelling for those interested, is that I apply authoritarian principles to my own life, and as a result of my self-discipline, structure, routine, and lifestyle, my quality of life has greatly improved, I am in a far higher place in life juxtaposed to when I lived like a libertarian and just did whatever I wanted and lived for my own individual wants.

One of points I wanted to emphasise in the video was the dimensionality of authoritarianism. You can manifest authoritarian characteristics and attitudes and not be defined by the dictator archetype. Your comment shows well the connection between personality and how someone forms a political attitude. Thank you for your comment!

Umm… I think you have things mixed up. Authoritarians want to control others. Anti-authoritarians do not want others to control them, but rather they want to control their own lives.

@@imperatorbaydonious3666 God is the only good authoritarian. Planning a growing society with the consent of the people is fine. But authoritarians do not seek the consent of the people. They just dictate and that is always bad.

@@utopiamath9070 I would have to dispute, first we can't even ascertain that God in the conventional identity even exists, second, God's behaviour could be translated as malevolent and even psychopathic.
There have been good authoritarians, none have been perfect, but many have been very antithetical to what would be considered a malevolent tyrant.

The Authoritarian series is not complete, this is just the first video to establish the basic political psychology behind authoritarians. Thank you for the feedback though! It is just that most political psychology research has used this particular measurement to study authoritarians.
The right-wing authoritarianism measurement (RWA) is actually a revised from a previous F (fascism) Scale measurement used before. So historically speaking, the research has been influenced a lot from the practises of fascist states in Europe, and less about their communist counterparts. Hope that clears it up!

@@politicalpsychology " It is just that most political psychology research has used this particular measurement to study authoritarians."
As Jonathan Haidt shows, essentially no right wing researchers exist who would conduct studies on Left Wing Authoritatianism. However, Justin Trudeau is a good example of left wing authoritarianism. Actually, the mayors of any "blue" (Democratic party) city are also authoritarian; everything is by mandate.

"... it can lead citizens astray..." From whose path? Implicit in "astray" is that a specified (by Authority!) path exists such that straying has meaning. Not even a discussion of authoritarianism can escape the evil clutches of authoritarianism. It is *everywhere* even in psychology. The DSM is an authority. Professors at universities are authorities.
A more correct portrayal in my opinion is to recognize that two very different things are being considered; to what extent I can and should impose upon my neighbor, and what exactly is "right" and "wrong" anyway. Christianity is a fairly well established collection of rights and wrongs but is highly variable in whether one person should compel another to the same set of rghts and wrongs.
Cancel culture and everything "woke" is a new type of religion but its Authority is well hidden. Who decides what today is "right" and "wrong", and for whom? But where Christianity is highly variable on whether to impose these rights and wrongs on others; "woke" has no such variability and most "woke" persons are zealous and aggressive about imposing this new religion. (It is also mostly "left").

But we're going to use it anyway!
"The Experts Somehow Overlooked Authoritarians on the Left. Many psychologists wrongly assumed that coercive attitudes exist only among conservatives. By Sally Satel"
You'll have to google the link. it might have been the URL that caused the auto-delete of my previous well-sourced commentary.
"Intriguingly, the researchers found some common traits between left-wing and right-wing authoritarians, including a preference for social uniformity, prejudice towards different others, willingness to wield group authority to coerce behavior, cognitive rigidity, aggression and punitiveness towards perceived enemies, outsized concern for hierarchy, and moral absolutism."

@@patrickswedin375 The Urban Dictionary, which published its original definition two years prior to the official dictionary, defines it as “being woke means being aware… knowing what's going on in the community (related to racism and social injustice)”. In other words, it means to be awake to sensitive social issues, such as racism.
But there's more to merely being aware of it. One must DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT to be fully considered woke. Naturally, doing something about racism IS racism, doing something about social injustice very often IS social injustice; "reparations" being an example:
Larry Elder puts it: *Taking money from people that have never owned slaves, and giving it to people that have never been enslaved* .
What does it FIX? My ancestor served in the northern Army (Wisconsin Regulars) to help *free* the slaves. If anything is owed something, it would be some gratitude to the northerners.
What modern movie dares cast a white man as President of the United States? Hunter Killer: Caroline Goodall plays the President. www.imdb.com/name/nm0328751/
The Beekeeper: Jemma Redgrave plays the President. www.imdb.com/title/tt15314262/
"Movies / TV with a Black Female Lead"
      www.imdb.com/list/ls560656899/
Morgan Freeman plays a pretty good president; that one is at least somewhat believable.
Remember Jurassic Park? A girls sits at a computer, pronounces it Unix, and declares, "I know Unix!" It is beyond ridiculous. It is not the Unix, but the custom software that runs the facility and the only one on Earth that could operate it is DEAD.

Altemeyer's survey is what one would call a "push survey" where the *approved* answers are implicit in the construction of the choices. For instance:
*It is always *better* to trust the judgement of the *proper* authorities in government and religion than to listen to the noisy rabble-rousers in our society who are trying to create doubt in people's minds* .
It is easy to determine the *proper* answer! Just look for "proper" in the survey statement.
Beware the existence of an *always* -- it is always the case that always is never correct.
My answer is not available to choose. I would say, "it is USUALLY better to trust the judgement of appointed or elected authorities when they are speaking on a topic within their expertise."
I suspect nearly everyone would choose such a thing if it were offered.
    Welcome to modern social science.
"There is absolutely nothing wrong with nudist camps."
Obviously it depends on which one. The one at Fairbanks in winter has a problem with cold temperature. The one in Tucson with 360 sunny days a year has a problem with sunburns. The one on the north shore of Oahu is nearly perfect, so yes, probably nothing wrong with that one. Oops, forgot about the mosquitos. They are a big problem in Hawaii.
That's probably why humans invented clothing.
