Great episode scout, I still need to get a bench belt sander,, for now I flip the hand belt sander on its back and clamp it down.. I better get my skates on to get my entry in 😬😉👍 cheers Rob
As usual, great content! Very informative. I always learn something new when i watch one of your videos. The wheel bearings are a nice touch! Can't wait to see your pinewood derby car all finished.
You must have a cabinet full of sanding supplies, belts, discs , drums etc? The more machines the more the accessories. This is where you need a very long shop with all the machines set out with the perfect space, and you just go from one to another. What joy that would be if the temperature was not cold and your head did not hurt.
I would always laugh when i watched the new yankee workshop and Norm would fire up his vertical oscillation belt sander. He would mention it nonchalantley, like everybody has a $50k oscillating belt sander. Great stuff, i hope to get started tomorrow. Cheers
Joe- Back in the day we all wished for a shop like Norms. The best part about him was his ability to break operations down to a understandable level and he is responsible for countless thousands of people getting into woodworking! Myself included... =D
Thanks John. I really enjoy your channel. Because of you, I seem to have adopted a opossum who shows up on my porch for dinner. In the past, I would have thought of him as a pest, then I remembered you and your kindness and decided to feed him.
Hello Ian! You are so lucky! Of all the stray animals I have here the Opossums are my favorite! Shy and gentle they are such a beautiful animal. They thrive on cat food but enjoy a treat every so often! 😃👍
Good job mentioning the sanding eraser. I was turned into those decades ago by a woodworker..I keep one hanging by the sander for use. Mine has a wooden backing and a handle that works great with palm sander cleanup as well.
The bearings in the wheels is a fantastic idea. That car is going to be smooth. Can’t wait for the final product. The drum sander is interesting to watch. I’ve seen them before. Easy work out of curves.
Another good one Bud!! It's funny I have a dual sander and never use the belt, just the disc!! But like you say it's the most used tool in the shop no matter which side you use!!☻
The best thing i ever got was the sand paper cleaner it’s a life saver The drum sander is really cool fantastic for curves great video scout I’m learning every day god bless take care 🦅👍🙏🇺🇸🗽🇳🇿🦔
One of those 4x6 sanders is always the first thing I look for at garage sales or flea markets but I’ve not found a good one yet. The tip below for hardened silicon caulk tubes is perfect I’ve got a few to try. Thanks again!
I have a similar Craftsman 4x36 Sander, that's what I used to shape out most of my derby car after cutting out the main shape on the band saw............For a lot of years I didn't have many woodworking tools and I probably pushed that sander to its limits on many occasions but it's still going strong and I have more tools now so it has an easier life now.
My Dad always used those belt erasers. Personally, I learned to use old sneakers. The foam just under the hard rubber bottom sole works as good as the erasers! Gets just a little more life from them before trash!
I love my oscillating drum sander. I have a Delta 4in belt, 6in disc sander I purchased in the late 90's. Like you I removed the disc, too small. I leave a 40 grit belt on the Delta and use it to sharpen my mower deck. Another machine most wood workers will not know about is a type of drum sander where the drum is mounted below the table. This is called a FlatMaster and sold by a Canadian company called Stockroom Supply. This uses hook and loop abrasive. This design does not heat up the abrasive. The paper lasts a LONG time. I normally manage to tear the abrasive by catching on the wood a long time before it wears out. Not a cheap machine, but a very useful addition to the shop. Dave.
Excellent, you're really selling this challenge John, I only wish I had the time to take part at the moment, it's looking like a lot of fun ! You're right my garage workshop is freezing, it's 23 degrees F (-5c) here tonight and everything stays cold for days even when the outside temperature heats up, especially all the cast iron and the concrete floor ! 🥶 I have an old 6" belt x 9" disc sander in bits currently needing some more work before it gets back into use, that might have to wait till after my lathe though, I need to retire, I've got way too many jobs waiting to bother with work ! 😉
Being in the shop when the temp is below 55 is no fun. That’s why I always said I would rather have a small basement shop then a huge garage shop. (Unless you live in California) 😂👍
I've got a fairly big DeWalt sander I'm about afraid to use but it's for body work. Maybe one day and a quarter sheet palm is good enough for anything I'm going to tackle. The Mrs? Probably not even close. Happy Mid-week, John and CHEERS with Blessings!
I bought a 6x48 belt sander with a 12” disc from a local scrap yard. It is a Delta Rockwell. I paid 50.00 for it. The biggest problem was the pulley on the motor had come loose. I replaced it and converted it to a push button on and off. The oscillating sander is a plus to any shop. I love mine. thank You
Great video 👍Fantastic information on belt sanders and oscillating drum sanders . Great info on keeping your belts clean with the belt eraser stick ,a lot of us would probably use our belts until they are worn then just change them out as necessary. I think this is fantastic way to keep the belts sanders and drum sanders clean so we can get more out of our belts. Didn’t know Amazon sold stuff like that and its not much money, that’s fantastic. Do you ever turn your belt sander vertical or on a slant when you do your tool restorations or do you leave it horizontal most of the time? Boy your car is going to be the fastest in the challenge with those bearings on the wheels 🏎💨💨🏁😂😂👍. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Friday. Have a great evening. 😄👍👍
I've got a 4 inch belt sander with a 5 in disc on the side and a 1 inch strip sander with a 4 inch disc. Great tools for a lot of things. I made a flip top cart for mine.

Well S.C. another good video, thx for bringing us along.. Take care..
I have two of those Craftsman belt / disc sanders. One I bought new and use, the other I bought used and it needs a cogged drive belt that is no longer available so it sits and rusts. I hole to adapt two v-belt pulleys and a v-belt and put it back to work.
Thanks so much for the fantastic lesson again I got a small belt sander for Christmas but guess what I didn’t get…. Yup that giant eraser I’m going online very soon and buying it 👍

Great Video. Just a quick warning that using the drill press with side pressure as you do when sanding, can cause premature wear of the spindle bearings as they are designed for pressure from drilling in a direct line, but may not tolerate side pressure so well.
Great info cheers John , so far I haven't any of the machines you've been showing , no lathe, now no horizonal / vertical or even drum sander ... I fear my entry may be cardboard ... again 😂😂😂
I bought that exact same Craftsman belt sander at an estate auction last fall, still in the bow for less than $25. It even had a stand. Not as heavy duty as the Delta I bought years ago.
