The golden age of college football is over. Money has once again corrupted amateur sports and has taken over. No longer will sports teach teamwork, honor, loyalty and fortitude. The damage has already begun an is massive. One of the most storied conferences in college football, the Pacific Coast Conference will be gone next year and kids are quitting their teams and transferring when times are tough or there’s more money to be made. Many don’t realize what we’re losing and won’t until its gone. Sadly, that is the history of man. Greed wins, humanity loses.

And with that, so goes much of the point and interest of college football. The quality of play will never be close to NFL quality. Very few teams are actual contenders every year.

To be honest, I don't know if I agree or not with rivalries being dead. I really don't. However, here are two things that I would be interested about that aren't really being talked about.
Take for example Marshall University. Most people know Marshall because of the film and the real tragedy that happened there. Where is Marshall's place in college football? Years ago on ESPN, I heard this little debate about is the Big Ten or Pac-12 better than the SEC. Jamele Hill said, "When Tennessee and Ole Miss are the worst programs in your conference, it has to be the SEC." In that kind of vein, again, what is college football when you have a storied program such as Marshall outside of the two super-conferences now? I am more interested in those teams than I am the super-conferences. I do think there is a point of having too much.
Secondly, I am interested about what the coaching is going to look like on the FBS level. I am seeing a lot of these great , seasoned, and respected FBS/D1 coaches getting out of those levels and either going from FBS to FCS teams or going from FBS/FCS to DII teams because of not wanting to deal with professional football, which is what college football now is. I am curious if there will be about a 7-10 year gap where you have a lot of young coaches gaining experience at FBS schools, not FCS or DII programs, but, because they are so young and unseasoned, that there will be a bit of a drop-off in the level of coordinator and positional coaching. I could be wrong. I am just curious about it.

Colin sees sports as strictly money-making operations instead of cultural and communal cornerstones. He's willing to see important parts of humanity go because "they don't make my bosses at Fox enough money." College football, which had the most traditional and localization is now dead, American sports are all franchises, they don't belong to their communities they belong to a handful of rich people. The College Football Super League will be the death of the game, but at least people like Coilin and his bosses will make some money. PATHETIC... Watch USL soccer; it's the closest mixture of sports and community. To all those disillusioned by capitalism getting its tentacles into sports, You'll Never Walk Alone.

Oregon State and Washington State are now de-facto G-5 teams. Big Ten (and all P-4) teams always play 2-3 lower tier games (G-5/FCS) games to pad their schedules. There’s no reason Oregon and Washington can’t continue to play Oregon State and Washington State every year.
Florida plays Florida State every year, USC plays ND every year. It’s not like there are no out-of-conference rivalries, even against tougher teams.

Old rivals may fizzle out but NEW ones will begin. Example, Carolina/Duke was NOT always a big thing because Duke only got good about 2 yrs AFTER Coach K took over at Duke.
The greater concern is making sure that each Team is firmly College affiliated, if not they will just be another bunch of Semi Pro Teams. If there is no Alabama/North Carolina/Duke/Michigan/USC/Ohio State...on the FRONT OF THE JERSEY those Stadiums will Never be filled! There will be no Students to cheer and go crazy, no Alumni to pour in money...without the Colleges, attendance and TV Revenue would be WORSE than the UFL. IT IS STILL COLLEGE FOOTBALL and NOBODY better forget that! Experimenting will have to happen to see what works best under this new system to try and make the playing field even, and don't go nuts when rules are changed. I'm glad kids are getting paid and not thrown away like so much trash if they get hurt or when their eligibility is up. But it is STILL ABOUT THE NAME ON THE FRONT OF THE JERSEY!

College football is in trouble, but it's not broken, for it to truly die there would need to be a few more steps taken. Like the SEC and Big Ten exchanging teams to balance the leagues out and cutting everybody else out of their super league. That COULD happen but it looks like it wouldnt happen anytime soon.

People acting like Ohio State is just gonna run the conference now in the future is kind of funny to me. Oregon is building a monster. Ohio State obviously is going to be near the top, but Ohio State not just gonna have control of the Big Ten with Oregon coming in with how Oregon is recruiting. it is way more likely it’ll be Oregon and Ohio State and then you will have the second tier which will be Penn State Michigan and maybe USC . Oregon is taking recruits and has the last couple years from Ohio State.

My biggest issue with this merger was and still is that I have an issue with the travel schedule. I'm not as worried about the rivalries, though that really sucks. I'm worried these games won't be even. The big travel ones will always be blow outs bc these college kids won't be ready for the travel schedule for the endurance, weather changes, plus class schedules. If USC goes to Purdue they'll get blown out, and vice versa if Purdue comes to USC. I think it will be popular on TV early but fans will opt out after a few seasons of the rinse and repeat predictability of travel fatigue and lack of rivalries that make college football great. I gwt that USC in a bigger market sounds good on paper. But there's too many other important factors missing.

In some rivalry games it can actually add value. Ole Miss was 9-2 going into the Egg Bowl. In the 12 team era, that would be a de facto playoff game for them. State could play big time spoiler instead of just for bowl eligibility.

No, he needs a history lesson and he obviously doesn’t know the PAC 12 very well if he is saying that. Washington- Oregon rivalry is the most hated rivalry that the two schools have. Both fan bases consider that game the true rivalry. They literally call it hate week. College football has morphed into a minor professional league. How's that working out for the other sports? Maybe they can juice it by allowing gambling on fantasy games? OR... maybe we can legislate an end to the NFL's age discrimination and allow those players who have zero interest in education to go right to the pros. Then the NFL can foot the bill for its own development programs and our universities can get back to playing student-atheletes... like they do in almost all the other sports.

I think what many are missing is that by virtue of the short-sighted decisions of some of these schools, the NCAA is squeezing the number of schools that can compete, and they have turned football players into mercenaries with no loyalty, ties, or contractual balance to the league. The $$ is going to dictate that there will be 2 or 3 conferences, and fewer than 30 schools that have any shot at the NIL deals and the paychecks required to attract these mercenary athletes. I am not blaming the athletes, I am blaming the morons who have created the wild west with these new lawless football games inside our school systems. What did you think was going to happen when you open the floodgates to unfettered mercenary rules?
For full transparency, my conference is dead, and so is my college team, so I guess you could say that I am salty. Now I get to choose between a professional football league (NFL) that has a salary cap, competitiveness, valid contracts and rules, to a lower-tiered professional football league (NCAA) that has no clear rules, no salary cap, and no loyalty from their mercenaries, and no contracts to even tie the players to the school. At least in the NFL you get your athletes for 4-5 year contract deals, and expect to have mostly the same team from year to year. The NCAA has thousands in the portal every year, looking for a better deal.
If there was an allure of the student athlete, it's gone. Some might say that it was already "somewhat gone". Maybe, but now there is no pretending. These guys are mercenaries. If there was an allure of playing for the love of the game? It's gone. If there was an allure of the "any given day", it's gone. If there was an allure of a "team" player that you might see for 4 years? It's gone, as they are hopping from team to team based upon the better deal. The portal is even open during Christmas and the kids leave mid year. It's nuts. The crazy part is that there aren't even any rules. It's the wild west, with law suits claiming damages for 50 years, and an unknown landscape in which the NCAA has no authority. Players are creating unions, while they are in school, receiving a free education from public taxpayer funds. I cannot even imagine the Title IX issues, or the cost to non-revenue generating scholarships for all of our Olympic sports. I think the likelihood is that half of the scholarships go away, and only the schools with the billions in endowments (Ivy, B1G, SEC, etc.) are going to keep them.
If you are from Alabama, or Ohio State, or one of the bigs, you can celebrate. Congratulations, you have secured your spot in the top tier, and you will now get richer as a % of the entire pie. Alabama doesn't have a pro team, and so their fans will be intact. Same with Oregon, LSU, etc. However, let's just say you diminish the competitiveness and interest in the other 75 teams in NCAA D1. How many fans did they have? Maybe 40% of the value? Where does that money go? My guess is that the size of the pie will go down.
My feeling is that I will never watch an NCAA game again. There's no point. My school has no shot, the players are one and done, and the game isn't as good, as competitive, as fast, or as fair as the NFL. The players aren't amateurs anymore, and I have never once watched an NBA G-League game, or an NHL minor league game, or a MLB minor league game, or an Arena Football game, or a Canadian Football game. In this new environment, NCAA D1 players are now mercenary pros who aren't as good as the players in the NFL, and they have no loyalty to the school.
Some will disagree, and that's fine. Like I said, if you are already rich, you are probably fine. Some of you also have ties to your school, and you will keep going, like my uncle's allegiance to University of Montana or my buddy's allegiance to Virginia Tech. That's great. However, I would suggest that the rest of the fans are going to see the NFL as a better option. How many is to be determined, but I am one of them. Just my 2c. Let's keep it civil. :)
