In this weekly episode of Kitabwala, Saurabh Dwivedi interviews the contributors of the essays on a book based upon the life and reflections of Gajendra Haldea. Mr. Ashok Lavasa, Prof. Sebastian Morris and Gajendra’s brother, Mr. Prithvi Haldea have participated in the conversation and have shared their experiences and anecdotes about Gajendra Haldea.
Gajendra Haldea, a dynamic bureaucrat, gave up his prolific postings and post retirement assets as he resolutely worked for the public welfare. Written by a group of civil servants, journalists and consultants, the essays of The Difficulty of Being Gajendra Haldea come up with a viewpoint of not only his contribution across the several sectors of infrastructure, but also in functions including policy governance, Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). His contributions include drafting the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA), authored the Electricity Act, 2003, as well as manifold model agreements for various infrastructure projects. The collection reveals Haldea’s exceptional passion for ensuring the success of various government projects. This is an insightful story of everyday prowess - a bureaucrat who modestly went about with his work and made innumerous efforts in the interest of the present and future generations. This book encompasses intriguing anecdotes like how he fought for over more than 30 years in civil services training institute LBSNAA for his well-deserved gold medal, how he was very particular about things, so much so that he always carried with him his own belongings like bedsheets to hotels and how Gajendra Haldea was a man of diligence and perseverance.

Such an amazing interview. Truly mesmerising as to how a Bureaucrat can be and how he can do great deeds towards the nation. Please make More interviews about IAS officers because they truly motivate and empower and also give us an insight on Indian bureaucracy and governance.
Proud of sir to have fought for the right to the gold medal . This type of partial behaviour is there in all departments. And very rightly said," soch ka locha," . The parameters are so vague and difficult to understand because the category to decide is being done on the basis of difference at the basic level.

Happy to see a discussion on contributions by Shri Gajendra Haldea but could have been better, if just in time Saurabh Dwivedi ji could have had an interview of the "father of PPP in India", the compendium on his site is a treasure India should cherish and maybe a whole paper for UPSC aspirants.

Many many thanks to Saurabh Dwivedi ji. I watched the conversation throughout. This is because I had been associated with Shri Haldwani ji when he was Director Social Welfare Govt of Rajasthan, when he was Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and when he was Adviser to Dy. Chairman Shri Ahulwalia in the Planning Commision (I served Planning Commision for 20 years). Shri Haldwani ji is known as father of inception of PPP era in India. His dedication, skill, and expertise in developing PPP model through MCA in different sectors is tremendous. He was also promoter of unbundling of Discoms.
I salute his generosity and dedication towards national interest.

I am amazed by the knowledge of Saurabh Dwivedi!
Saurabh you do one on Enron’s Solar Project of 50 MW which was unimaginable in 1996-97. Enron wanted to put of 10MW manufacturing plant of Solar PV modules and in turn 10 MW generation plant to be completed over 5 years. Power to be sold to RSEB. But it couldn’t be completed due to tariff arrangement.

I am feeling that’s it’s my personal loss so that I cannot meet him.

An excellent insight into the life of Late Sh Gajendra Haldia, the blue print provider as also executer of his blue print is given by Mr Trivedi who did fairly good justice but for shortage of time.All three speakers chosen were perhaps the besy choice to aptly describe Sh Gajendra Haldia - who can well be brought on an OTT platform for the nation to know him better - not only as an oustanding Bureaucrat but with reflection of his personal life he had lived to mentor not only sitting bureaucrats in the GOI, many of who donot measure upto expections of a docile man on street because they donot have yhe three CCC's elaborated by Sh Ashok Lavasa
