    dunno why but i kinda like playing video games on crt tvs. Yes 1080p and 4k Tvs are beautiful but playing on a old tv takes me back to my teens

    I still use my 360 and PS3 on a crt. With a good quality cable it can look good. Only downside with these converters is that that the video is composite quality and not rgb. I prefer crt for the colours and no input lag

    • @Zero1Zero1
      @Zero1Zero1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Monitors have (despite what the manufacturers say) input lag. That's the reason I'm using a CRT, not because I don't have a monitor

      quality of cables have like no real effect

    • @Zero1Zero1
      @Zero1Zero1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Gravity for digital this is true but for analog it simply isn't. Voltage drop over the cable length can lead to lower quality (so always use the shortest cable possible) and you can also get crosstalk and interference. There is a huge difference between composite an rgb scart. Even between different cables of the same type you can see small improvements.

    • @roasthunter
      @roasthunter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well done, I still use my PS2 and my Amstrad CPC from 1980s. For the other comments about input lag, converting HDMI to Scart is likely to be doing some digital processing, digital to analog, so while CRT have no input lag as they don't do digital signal processing on direct analog signals, plugging in a converter will introduce some lag.

    One unfortunate problem with this technique is that a HDMI-SCART converter like this is only converting HDMI into a crappy composite video signal rather than RGB, reducing the quality. You want ideally to be using an RGB capable converter.

    Actually in the US (and other countries which use NTSC-U), they never has the SCART connector. All they had was Composite/AV (Red, White & Yellow connectors) and the select few used S-Video (i.e. Hi-Fi & AV enthusiasts). This meant that them countries had to put up with shockingly bad image quality on their TV's (which is the best that Composite/AV can give) until HD television came along. Us in the UK and other European countires were very lucky indeed to have high quality true RGB Scart pictures. :-)

      But most of the time we got the same games on consoles, so everything ran 16% faster than it should and the supposedly "higher" resolution ofthe PAL system (567i or so) wasn't used by most games making them have artificial borders to fill the gap. Also European Games ran at 25fps, while US ones ran at 30fps.

    One clarification: the actual vertical resolution of CRT TVs isn't its norm's standard (576 for PAL or 480 for NTSC), it's actuall half that. Since these norms worked as interlaced formats each frame (25 on PAL and 29.97 on NTSC) was made of fields that in practice translate to 50 and 60 frames per second respectively but at a vertical resolution of 288 pixels for PAL and 240 for NTSC. So that's a long way from 720p, very noticeable difference.
    Still, CRTs are awesome, I definitely prefer them for classic gaming and have all my compatible consoles hooked to it (via composite, S-Video and component which are my best options for now... no SCART here in Argentina either!)

  • @Jayrod64
    @Jayrod64 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Some Virtual console games look better on CRT. A good example of this the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, where in Castle Town in particular, it's very obvious that the textures haven't aged well, and they look like complete crap on a flat screen TV. However with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, I'd actually recommend getting the 3DS versions at this point, as they have better graphics and controls. Also some games have text that's surprisingly more legible on a CRT TV, most likely due to the font being used.

  • @MagnumForce51
    @MagnumForce51 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If you're gonna get a CRT for a modern console like the Switch, it's worth looking for a Trinitron CRT. They have superior picture compared to traditional shadow mask CRTs. ;)
    The Sony PVM/BVMs were simply the best ever made. If you could find one, you should definitely try and get one of those. Though the HD capable PVMs are hella expensive. Sony did make some HD capable consumer grade Trinitrons in the early 2000s just before the switch over to flatpanels. But this was during the "flat tube" era and I don't really care for flat screen tubes. They tend to have some geometry issues and it's most noticeable on retro side scrolling games.

    The new fast chargers have a special chip in them that communicates to smartphones that support the fast charging capabilities. If the device that is drawing power doesn't have that ability(e.g. That converter) then it will only allow 5V output. I do this all the time with my fast charger and it always works fine for everything.

    My guess would be that having the Tegra processor allows it to use Nvidia DSR. In PC gaming you can run your game at 4K and downscale with DSR to give an improved, sharper picture. Obviously it requires a PC capable of 4K, and you don't quite get a native 4K image, but it certainly clears up some jaggies and stuff.
    The Switch is capable of up to 1080p, and it renders at the game's natural resolution and then upscales or downscales accordingly tou whatever setting you have chosen. My guess would be it does it's usual 900p rendering in Zelda, upscales to 1080p, and then downscales using Nvidia DSR to the TV's native resolution and gives less jaggies than a 576p image.

    • @eddiesoto-ramirez3493
      @eddiesoto-ramirez3493 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bluenose Bear Nope. I did the same thing with a PS4, Xbox 360 and a Wii U a while ago and I can say that the scaling is done by the adapter. The higher the resolution the better the picture sharpness despite the resolution not being technicaly possible.

    • @batman8293
      @batman8293 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm referring to how he says it looks nicer than it usually does at the when downscaled to a lower resolution, not how the adapter downscales the image.

    • @eddiesoto-ramirez3493
      @eddiesoto-ramirez3493 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bluenose Bear I know but in this case the switch (if it has it)wouldn't be able to use Nvidia DSR as the adapter allows a 1080 input and then downscales it to the appropriate output. Basically the Switch has no input when downscaling as it detects the adapter as a 1080 tv.

      Rin back then hd crts were luxury expensive TVs and were not necessary at all because back then all consoles , antennas 16 years ago weren’t strong enough to output 16 years ago 720p or 1080p For the hd crt TVs

    This is perfect for family com online that I received with my nintendo switch online purchase Because I didn't have the original hardware and I don't want to pay for something that's honestly more expensive than it should be on eBay

      Then as MultiJeje12345 said, play on the tablet, it's 720p. Also you could take it to your grandparents house. And let's be real here, if you can't find a HD TV, how in the world did you get a Nintendo Switch?

    Wished I had rewatched this first after wasting hours trying to get the HDMI to AV to work, it works-ish but the AV is just a touch off so it looks drained of colour and clarity is very poor. Its a Thomson Scenium Plasma HD and I read up somewhere the AV3 it uses doesn't like 1080p in a AV format so grabbed a similar box to yours in the vid and hoping this will work. The Android box is a 4K thingy, pretty good paying just a tenner for it with a decent amount of memory and basic storage, I only want it for Netflix and iPlayer. Gonna dig out my home cinema speakers and subwoofers as this telly has all the connections for 9 outputs. Ny upstairs neighbour gave me the telly last week, it had spent years just sitting in his spare room with a cover over it and has about 5 hours of watching time on it and he paid a fortune for it when new and it is very very clean and crisp :D

    The switch OS/UI is rendered at 720p when set to 1080p so that test at the start was kind of pointless. That setting only relates to games and Zelda renders at 900p. Cool video though :).
