Great Video!!! Thanks for not editing out the catches and other mishaps! It is nice to see how the turning technique is an evolution of the trial and error experience. If people don't think turning is an art, you have proven the point. The gouge is your brush and the wood your canvas!!!
If I had the money, I would buy a Robust lathe. It is a FANTASTIC lathe and is used by many professional turners. But I sure liked your first wood bowl!!
I LOVE your show and am so happy to see you pursuing woodworking. Best investment I ever made was a turning class...from what I could see in the video, the catches are primarily because you are going from small to large diameters...always go from large to small.
Good job on your first turning. You are right, the first time with the catches can be frustrating. If I were selling tools to you as a novice, i would have recommended the Easy Wood tools with the replaceable cutting heads. They catch less, the heads are very easily sharpened, and come with either a round, square, or diamond point heads. Keep on turning, and as you get better, you will have less frustration. He is right, it's cheaper than therapy!
Thank you for your video on the wood lathe. Miss your show on Public TV. You are truly a great person to watch as you show different crafts. Great a what you do keep it up.
Glad to see you stepping into a little bit of your family's old skills. Great to see some more content. Hopefully more in the near future? Always enjoyed seeing your episodes regardless what trade skill was showcased. I always knew it would be a good show.
Terrific video! Thanks for bringing us along on a fabulous journey! A great presentation. I've missed your quality videos on TH-cam. I hope there's more coming? With love ❤ from sunny 🌅 Arizona.
Beautiful IS useful, even when not utilitarian. I have had many people comment on my cracked, termite infested, dry rotted, knot riddled bowls and ask, "Can this be used for salads?" After that, there is nothing I can say that will convince them it's "just" art and useful in it's own right as something beautiful that will give joy even without the salad dressing.
@@CraftsmansLegacy Interesting I had this very discussion yesterday with a friend about one of my bowls that had some major cracks and holes. He said it was beautiful but not functional. I told him it did have a function and its function was to sit there and be beautiful and inspire others. He had no response...
That is awesome! I am so happy for you. I still feel the same way every time I turn something. There is just something deeply rewarding about taking something from God's creation and making something useful or even just something artful to look at. I still have my first bowl it is a small bowl as well, it sits on my desk and I fill it with chocolate espresso beans. Keep turning an making shavings...
@@CraftsmansLegacy Right on. Nice work on the video. Super cinematic. I was hoping it was someone near the Woodcraft by me in the Lehigh Valley. Keep it goin!

Thank you! Robust builds an impressive lathe for sure!

It's good to see you getting your hands dirty!
Eric, when you come to Columbus Woodcraft, suggest you take our bowl turning class from Devon Palmer! LOL Turning is definitely addictive!

Nicely put sir. Thank you
Save that as your first whatever? You have accomplished something greater than yourself!

Yes you can but remember you have a balance point and if you keep turning big things it will wear out that point I stick to what I said
Good advice! Thank you, Richard
What company created this video for you?
We have our own production company. Hammer in Hand Productions.

Nova makes a great lathe but give it a little time and you will want to turn bigger 15 inches is not that big
Possibly, but I can swing the drive 90 for larger bowls!
@@CraftsmansLegacy and buy or build an outrigger.
Just never go with rikon. From experience, rikon lathes are a complete joke. The new ones are anyway.
