    I remember the coolest moment for me during a Werewolf encounter.
    It was I was a GM and the players found out that a believed serial killer was in actuality a Werewolf crime boss. It was murdering the people who convicted the crime boss' little brother. (It was a reference of Jigsaw and his brother Loony Bin Jim from the Punisher: Warzonw movie). What the crime boss was doing was recruiting a group of brigands to start a Werewolf crime syndicate.
    There were only 2 Werewolves as the crime boss dipped. I expected the party to run. Then the Monk player took out his silver coins and placed them within finger gaps.
    I was so impressed. I allowed his Unarmed strikes to have the 'Silvered' condition. From there, the other players used their silver coin pieces as improvised weapons.
    After the encounter. The Monk immediately asked a blacksmith for Silver knuckles. It was a good time.

    if anyone here wants a way around the "just cast remove curse" dilemma, van richten's has a cr13 werewolf variant called the Loup Garou and in the description, it says *"A Humanoid who succumbs to a loup garou’s lycanthropy becomes a werewolf. This form of lycanthropy can’t be removed while the loup garou that inflicted the curse lives".* So not only can you make a werewolf that cant just be beat by a spell, you also have a boss werewolf that's actually the challenge rating of a vampire.

    I made a character that was a natural born werewolf. Our DM did a little retconing and made it so that natural born were creatures have better control over their beast forms then those not born a Were. But he still made it that on a full moon, everyone's shit gets wrecked. It was interesting.

    Hey there! I hope you guys enjoyed the video. A little late but I just want to post a clarification:
    When I say _"unless your martial classes have silver weapons, they'll basically just be meat shields for the casters,"_ what I mean is because the party going up against the werewolf in this encounter will be so low level, they will most likely have no magical weapons, and thus, will just be meat shields. Lycanthropes are NOT immune to magical weapons. Hope this clears things up :)

    • @InquisitorThomas
      @InquisitorThomas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The party artificer: Did you say something about the Martials not having access to magic weapons at low levels? Honestly this is why I prefer swapping the damage immunity for really strong regeneration that is only negated by silvered weapons that the Wereraven and Loup Garou have.

    So in my setting I have a deity that represents the hunt as well as things like lycanthropy. So I am thinking it may be possible for all types of lycanthropy to exist. Though this makes it sooo difficult to choose just one. Oh, I know, make a table then roll on it right before the encounter to see which one it is.
    1. Werewolf
    2. Werechicken
    3. Lycantoad
    4. Wererat
    5. Weretiger
    6. Wereboar
    7. Werebear
    8. Wereother
    Decisions made easy when you don't have to decide.

    • @HiddenNerdySide
      @HiddenNerdySide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool idea! And soloing in on one type of lycanthrope might initially make more sense (since a rat god would make wererats, a bear god would make bears, etc.). However, you can totally workshop things to make it random like you're doing. And making lycanthropy in general associated with one god definitely achieves that.

  • @asepsisaficionado7376
    @asepsisaficionado7376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the easiest solution would be to just tie up the son and take him on a carriage ride to the ritual. Maybe even tie him using a silver chain.
    Although some people tend to think it cheapens the experience, I like to do secret rolls for things like lycanthropy infection. It would let a potential transformation blindside them more organically. Also, it's easier to pull off a secret roll given all my campaigns are done online.

    This is awesome. Does lycanthropy affect constructs? I assume so since you seem to have one in your player lineup. I need to think of an idea like this. (looking around and sees your other video in the sidebar) What about a werehydra?

    • @HiddenNerdySide
      @HiddenNerdySide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! And in previous additions, warforged weren't considered humanoids, but they are in 5e so they can be I believe.
      Also, a werehydra sounds absolutely f***ing rad! haha

    • @TheFearsomeRat
      @TheFearsomeRat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally I'd rule that they can't, as they are more like constructs then anything else.
      And unless specifically stated a construct can't be afflicted by lycanthropy, as while it IS a curse it works more like a disease then a curse (odd I know), not to mention the Warforged typically have metal plating across them so transformation would be difficult I'd imagine.
      However if you want to rule it i'd say, give the resulting Werewolf higher AC then normal (assuming the plates remain "fused" to them after transformation), give them a penalty to certain dexterity checks, like stealth, if the armor has or is made from silver reduce the vulnerability to silvered weapons, other then that make changes as you see fit to accommodate the Warforged.
      Might take a few tries, to make it work almost seamlessly from a narrative point but the payoff could be interesting and could lead to adventures that normal instances of Lycanthropy simply can't.

      @allenz7688 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheFearsomeRat Can Warforged not be druids (wildshape) at your table either? If they can transform into a wolf or a bear, I don't see transforming into a werewolf or a werebear as being any different.

    • @TheFearsomeRat
      @TheFearsomeRat 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@allenz7688 Wildshape is essentially just using magic to transform (like polymorph for example), so I'd probably rule that they can but for Lycanthropy, I rule no as while it might be magical in nature it is in all due essentiality a disease in how it transfers, as I treat it as something your either naturally born with (for instance I believe there is a old rumor during medieval times that having a certain number of children (like the 7th one or so), is a son they will be a werewolf) or is given to you by an existing one.
      But for all intents in purposes I treat it as something that is naturally occurring (think like Vampires in the Witcher), while things like Wildshape and Polymorph are magical.

    • @allenz7688
      @allenz7688 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFearsomeRat Weird, but okay.
      Is there an edition of D&D that treats it as a disease instead of a magical curse, or are you pulling that from outside the game system? Even the OG Slavic mythology surrounding the werewolf (the Wilkołak) revolves around being cursed. Additionally, the (later) Greek version with Lycaon comes from a curse from Zeus.

    Regarding the damage immunities, I interpreted this as the werewolf is immune unless the weapons are magical OR silvered. As in the party will do damage if their weapons are magical or if their weapons are silvered. It has to fulfill one of the requisites, not both.
    Is this what you meant and if not, am I interpreting this the wrong way?

    • @HiddenNerdySide
      @HiddenNerdySide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lonny. You're correct. What I mean (and later clarify in the video) is because the party going up against the werewolf in this encounter will be very low level, they will most like have zero magical or silvered weapons, and therefore, won't be able to do anything.

    Just used this encounter on my party. It did not go well. Nothing on you or the encounter, it was fantastic and the session was definitely memorable but man did it go wrong. The second I introduced the sick son one of my players immediately picked up that it he could’ve been infected with lycanthropy as a joke. But as they investigated the forest and even re dug up the bodies of the nearly buried victims they assumed it could be a large beast or a werewolf. No due to some story things the party of 5 was split. So I only had 2 players. A level 3 monk and a level 3 ranger with a griffin mount (not literal griffin stats because that would be op). I tried to throw their sent off the lycanthrope route by throwing red herrings but it didn’t work. They asked the blacksmith for silver tools and he could only provide 5 Silver arrows and a silver dagger (I didn’t want them to be fully prepared). They track the creature to a cave, an enclosed space where the griffin rider would lose this ability maneuver. Even after getting surprised by the werewolf. They were able to defeat it by having the rangers griffin tackle it and grappling it, giving it disadvantage. What occurred next can only be described as depressing. For 7 rounds the griffin held the werewolf down. After 3 failed attempts to break out of grapple he gave up started attacking everything. All the while the monk repeated stabbed the grappled werewolf and the ranger shot out its eyes. My rolls where absolute shit and I missed all my attacks. When the werewolf got to 2 hp, I made a final bite attack against the monk. I succeeded and the monk had to make a con save in order to not be infected with lycanthropy. The player that plays the monk is infamous in my group for bad rolls. His rolls is so bad he had 3 characters die within a session apart at one campaign. So I thought to myself “The least I can do is infect the player to create an interesting story plot point for the future”. Well, for the first time in 2 campaigns and dozens of sessions. My player that was infamous for his bad rolls (including rolling physical dice, dice on roll 20, dice rolling apps, and the discord bot we used). That player rolled a nat 20. The boy turns to the child. And the session ended depressingly. But we all had a laugh afterwards. It definitely did not go the way I though it would.

    • @HiddenNerdySide
      @HiddenNerdySide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha. Man - that is unfortunate! But hey, that’s the way it goes sometimes. Not matter how carefully you plan or hard you try, players can always surprise you and the dice gods can smite you.
      But guess what - it sounds like it was really memorable! And you decided to let your players win with their choices instead of trying too hard to “save” the plot you had planned - so I commend you for it.
      I remember one time I had a similar situation where a player guessed the secret identity of the entire campaign’s big bad through a throwaway joke. It happens! All you can do is have a laugh and move on.
      But that griffin sounds like the real MVP! I hope it was properly rewarded 😂

    • @HiddenNerdySide
      @HiddenNerdySide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. You're right. That is something the party can do. The party could also have no clue into the fact the son is a werewolf. They could also skip the quest entirely.
      Unfortunately, to keep these videos a decent length, I can't include everything. If I went around trying to plan for every single outcome, these videos would be hours long and I still wouldn't cover everything (and they would be really boring).
      You are also assuming the following:
      1) The party figure out it's the son specifically and believe they have enough evidence to outright accuse him.
      2) The party feels good about chaining up this kid
      3) The boy, his father, and the town would just let the party take the boy away without sufficient evidence. The power is low levelled at this point, so they can't take on a whole village. And even if they can, would they beat or slaughter the people they are trying to save?
      4) The boy sticks around the following day. What if he leaves?
      5) The party wants to chain up someone who they think is a werewolf. What if the boy turns again and they have no way of killing it? Remember, at this point, they have already had to flee because they had no way of dealing with it.
      6) The chains are strong enough to hold the werewolf
      But let's also say everything goes their way and they do chain up the boy, or even just kill him on the spot. Great! They are absolutely allowed to do that. It sucks they didn't go through the craziness of the ritual, but that's what makes D&D so special. You can't plan for every single outcome. You just do your best to tell a story and shape it around the player's actions. And sometimes their actions turn out to be something way better than you could possibly imagine.
      The encounters I make on this channel are almost never going to go 100% the way they are described, and that's okay. They are just here to help DMs who are in a creative slump come up with some ideas. So long as they achieve that - I'm happy.
      Hope this helps!

    I made it so there was a cult of Lycanthropes who would take people in and add them to their pack every Blood Moon through a Ritual at a Stonehenge. The elders have learned the curse's wild magic cannot be contained over time through multiple transformations so many of the werewolves turned into DireWolf style werewolves that are stuck in that form. The party can happen upon the ritual and intervene or watch and see. The brute of the cult will hassle the elders and challenge them with his own posse of werewolves as they battle, the party can fight the victors or just talk to them. Either way my friends had a great time with it
