In a port city I have I’ve been bringing up the importance of the light house just waiting for when said lighthouse gets up and walks away due to fish divinity
just YES. perfect. I had this idea though, what if there is an npc trying to abuse the god making abilities by converting a large colony into a cult. any cult. 3 options I came up with were, 1: this is cult to a nonexistent deity which would gift the world and more to the cultists as long as they follow exactly as the cult leader commands. 2: cult of personality and the cult worships the leader as a god and he will soon become one with the kua-toa's help 3: a genuine cult to an actual entity, the existing elements of the cult though the toa would bring power to their god, but they only accidentally created a replica of the original entity with the POV of the toa changing a few things. I thought these would be really interesting paths to go down. so yea. hope ya like it
One more thing: a friend of mine had the idea of a Lurker in the Deep Warlock whose patrons are a group of Kuo-Toa. Since the Warlock in my group has the Kuo-Toa Goddess as his patron, he's pretty much there already. All in all: these fish-people are amazing
Omg I love these guys 😂 My current character (Tiefling Rogue) ended up tricking an entire cult of Kuo-toa that she was their Goddess and ended up semi-ascending so now she’s currently that cult’s acting God lmaooo Seeing these guys always makes me happy so I’m glad to see you made a video on them!
I think this is 1 of the best encounters you've designed. Having one group like being naked It's just hilarious. Also what you did with the gods And showed how their power is related to their followers Is really unique And how they downsize really well Done I must say.
Thank you! The relations between gods and followers is a huge focal point for me in my campaigns (for better and worse), but it was fun to finally add a solid mechanic to it.
My Kuo-Tua are a doozy: So the Paladin in my game’s backstory involves hailing from a mountaintop Dwarf city that was overrun by monstrosities emerging from the adjacent steaming swamps at the base of the mountain. So I had to come up with a cause for this abomination event, and what better than a community of fish folk conjuring a vengeful god. The Kuo Tua were a loose collection of clans, all somewhat peacefully coexisting. Each clan conjured their own god, with disputes decided based on their gods tiny kaiju battles. No event could galvanize the whole society, until the dwarves did something unforgivable. The city was a bastion of trade, the place where the merchants north and south of the mountain range exchanged their goods. Kuo Tua fish oil was the best lubricant that had been discovered, but the fish people had no interest in trading with the city dwellers. So, some greedy dwarves discovered a goldmine: the Kuo Tua's communal breeding grounds. Thousands of eggs, slathered in the priceless lubricant. All those lives, snuffed out in one genocidal act of Dwarvish greed. The collective anguish of the Kuo Tua brought them all together, conjuring an equally vengeful god. The retribution was swift, the souls of these slain eggs being reanimated as a slurping slime army. To add to it, the Main BBEG’s goal is to become a lich. One of the steps: kill a god, and his sights are set on this Kuo Tua dirty. So very soon the party will be potentially protecting the destroyer of the Paladin’s entire civilization.
I am so incredibly glad I stumbled across your post in r/DMAcademy! Your videos and encounters are literally better than some of the stuff I've seen in the new candlekeep book!! You deserve 800x the amount of subs you have! Fantastic content, I will be subscribing!! Keep up the great work dude!
Excellent video as always! Also another thing you can do is have the two tribes and there gods unite to defend against an army of invading ixitxachitls trying to get the magic anvil!🧙♂️
So my dm used your video for inspiration and we get to the point of my character who my friends refer to as "tiefling dark prince charming sorcerer who walks into the nudist colony in nothing at all and starts talking to the kuo-toa and using medicine to heal any injured and uses his devine bloodline sorcery magic to create food and heal the sick. When they ask my character why he is helping them my character himself being an outcast tells them "I am but a being who embraces the outcasted and the wronged." Dm tells me to make a social check. (Forgot to mention due to a roll for how my sorcery was obviously shown, and an effect that happens whenever I cast a spell dm had me roll them at character start as the dm then discribes as while talking was removing the sickness from a child. "As you all look at your friend this dark blue tiefling with red eyes with orange irises healing this child you see as he cast him magics the familiar blue flame crown writhing his head as you see several of the kuo-toa drop to there knees and start praying tword this figure who while wreathed in fire does not burn others but warms them." Dm made my character a demigod of compassion and left the party but before he did got to join the party in this last fight against the other god. My character is now a kuo-toa import god called the protective flame. His shire is a candle between a set of horns in the middle of a wreath of smaller candles. The dm was wanting to reward me as that character was a strict pacifist having even previously been in a fight with the campaigns bbeg (fallen paladin) where my character refused to fight healing the party but when everyone else was downed he stood between the bbeg and downed party telling him if he had any honor left then he would walk away and if not my character would happily sacrifice himself to save his friends. That paladin who himself had lived for his companions who he damed the gods for not saving couldn't bring himself to look at my character feeling guilt as my character stood as his opposite
I will definitely steal this. Thank you! And thank you for giving me an option to get an Aboleth in there, since I have a soft spot for abberations and mind control.
I was looking for some Kuo-toa lore for an encounter I am planing and found this great video witch got me some inspiration. I want to create a Pirate Kuo-toa encounter where the Kuo-toa live on a Shipwreck that became a god of these Kuo-toa, so you can have lair actions from the ship in battle with get weaker the more Kuo-toa get defeted.
If I was to change one thing about the Kuo-Toa it would be to make it so they had been enslaved by the aboleth's instead of the mind flayers. I just think that Kup-Toa make for better minions for the aboleths sense they can live in water but can survive on land, meaning they could serve to carry out the will of the aboleths on land while also being able to follow their old masters out into the ocean. On top of that the reason the aboleths hate the gods is that Kuo-Toa created their gods as a means to fight back against them, kind of like how we develop immunities to diseases we have been exposed to, at the cost of their sanity. And it was with the help of their gods that Kuo-Toa where able to break free of the aboleths and drive them into hiding, which ironically would happen to the Kuo-Toa with the coming of elves and humans.
Not sure if this was already said but further along in a campaign if at least one of the tribes are left alive the Kuo-Toa could "go on tour", showing off their god at settlements and having it perform miracles for it to gain more worshippers, with the potential of a legitimate god with a foothold in the land to order their followers to slay the deity potentially challenging their power and the followers of the Kuo-Toa god to plea for the assistance of the party once more or have angels (or devils) come to carry off their new deity to join an established pantheon
Ok so we didn't make the first comment this time lol Jilpjoop & Glipglop, nudist followers, shirts vs skins, lair mechanics, and the potential to have world altering consequences on the pantheon level. You may have outdone yourself on this one, Matt!! Seriously, this has every potential element for an amazing time at the table! It has agency, silliness, chaos, and an incredible amount of lasting impact baked in. Seriously, amazing video!! I was gonna suggest sea hags before I heard you mention it so just WOW!!
Haha that's alright! I like to make a wide range of encounters so there is a little something for everybody. But that also means there are going to be a least a few things that won't strike a chord. That's the way she goes!
I absolutely take requests! I ask for them at the end of all my Let's Build an Encounter vids. Dryads are on the list and a few elementals are on there as well. So they'll be coming eventually!
I love the idea of someone attempting apotheosis via manipulating the tribe but have found themselves bound by the the beliefs of the tribe so they are forgetting their original goals
Thanks for watching!

Love this encounter :)
I have two encounter episode ideas for future. I know it takes time. no need to worry
Banshee and Boneclaw
@@Dahaka-rd6tw I'll put them on the list! (Banshees already are)
Adding wacky encounters that capitalize on the cultures of random creatures is literally what makes dnd feel like a living breathing world.
Very true! You can make anything work so long as everyone in the world acts accordingly
In a port city I have I’ve been bringing up the importance of the light house just waiting for when said lighthouse gets up and walks away due to fish divinity
Fish divinity > channel divinity
Hidden Nerdy Side Kuo-Toa soul sorcerer when?

this just made me wonder something what would happen if a kuo toa worshiped an already existing god like tiamat or something
