  • Mr Cartoon is one of the most famous tattoo artists to ever put ink to skin. His artistic journey began in graffiti before moving to airbrushing clothes and low rider cars. He's got a line of Turtle Wax car care, designed wheels, and has an amazing garage of his own. We talk about the history of low riders; how hydraulics work; the legality of them; how he got into cars; wild builds over the years; the hardest form of art; whether a celebrity makes him nervous; the hardest body part to tattoo; and so much more.
Stars such as Eminem, Travis Barker, Slash, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, along with athletes like CC Sabathia, Kobe Bryant, Lewis Hamilton, and Carlos Boozer wear Cartoon’s art on their skin. Cartoon’s art has been featured in numerous publications including Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Complex, Juxtapoze, XXL, GQ, and he's had art showing in London, Paris, Tokyo, and his hometown of Los Angeles.

It was kinda cool to be the only lowrider invited to your WCCS x BCC gathering last September.
My dad and I were surprised at the amount of genuine interest in the car’s paint, hydraulics, and subculture itself. Plus, it was awesome to meet you guys in person.

So cool seeing such a legend here. And as much as I knew him for tattoos and his graphic work, I didn't know he was so much into cars!

Kudos to Matt & Zach opening up to a different car culture! So interesting! Being from the South, I’d love to see him talk with someone about Donks (if they’re still called that), and rear engine trikes; two segments rarely appreciated outside certain circles. Well done, sir!

One thing I have always loved and respected about low riders is the extreme amount of hours and detail in any given car. The custom engraving, the murals. Extreme layered paint jobs. Chrome plating. Etc etc. it just goes on but it’s so cool to see how much of a labor of love it is.

Excellent show! I've been a fan of Mr. Cartoon for a long time. He's 100% right about thw young generation not wanting to put in the hours doing the labor. I blame part of it on modern "throw away" parts.

LOVE this episode... design and style discussions don't happen much nowadays, and it's really missing from the car world. Unfortunately, a lot of it most likely has to do with the last decades being so incredibly bleak in arts in general. It's all about tech, regardless of domain... and sure, it's nice to have every car drive MUCH better than anything pre 2000, but we're in such of an artistic hole... it's really depressing as an artist. I work in film, and nowadays my job is to push out technically perfect animation for shit scripts we all know are going to get destroyed by critics and the public... but somehow, the industry continues to push these drone movies out, like SUVs. I am an optimist at heart, and I do believe that everything is a pendulum swing... vacuum creates space for innovation, which, in the car world, oddly enough is starting to be filled by Hyundai, Kia... manufacturers who had nothing going on design wise, and have nothing to lose. It's a slow transition, but I really, REALLY hope we're going to have an artistic boom in the next decade. The tech world is absolute shit. AI seems to be the turning point tho. Good artists and screenwriters, designers... will have SO MUCH value... because the competition will be trying to cheap out on design and use AI, which will inevitably lead to blandness, without anyone able to put any soul back into it. The value of talent will rise.
