  • I made a toggle switch to turn on/off the fake engine sound (ASC=active sound control) on the fly. Check out their differences in this clip. The test is done in Track mode. I actually liked the fake engine sound better. Which one do you prefer?

Sounds better natural. Having just changed the exhaust on my BRZ to a quieter one, I now appreciate the smooth mechanical noise my engine makes without all that noisy roar getting in the way.

I wouldn't want to be driving around hearing that noise, but if I was on a track, hearing your engine can be helpful for gear changes without looking at the tach so I think it would be a good idea to have it on.

Best video comparison I've seen - thank you!!! For what it's worth, I think we ALL want more sound at SOME points while driving. The ASC is no different than adding an aftermarket or GR Perf exhaust, but has the upshot of being able to be turned on/off or be louder in track mode than regular driving, and not attracting unwanted attention/waking the neighbors. That's why I'll probably leave mine on and not spend the money on an exhaust. People who don't like the particular sound of the ASC are fine to say so, but they could just as easily be dissatisfied with a particular aftermarket exhaust. There's no guarantee that any sound will please all. Regardless, I do think Toyota should make it a toggle switch like yours so no one needs to fuss either way :). Keep it up!

I’m new to Subaru engine so I wasn’t familiar with the noise from the flat 4 engines. But boy, the FA24 sounds so rough all the time. It sounds like something is loose at idle with some clicking noise. And at lower rpm in 1st or 2nd gear while acceleration it sounds like something is rattling from the engine bay. There is another sort of vibrating type noise at full throttle at higher rpm. Basically it always sounds broken to me in the GR86. With the stories out there about blown engines, I’m very nervous half the time driving the GR86.

Just picked up a manual BRZ a few days ago, and swear it doesn't have the fake engine noise by default. Can anyone confirm if it's suppose to come on at certain RPM? Or do you have to press the accelerator all the way down? So far I've been driving below 4,000 RPM (but still quite fast a few times), and don't think I've heard it once.
I can hear lots of random road noises, the sound of the gears, and the engine noise reminds me exactly of a manual NA Impreza (sounds like mini-tractor). Don't think I've heard any Gran Turismo 2 engine noises yet. The only other BRZ I ever drove was the auto BRZ at the dealer many months back for the test drive, and that one 100% had the fake engine noises.

Do you know if the speaker used under the glovebox is dedicated to the fake sound or is it also used for the ICE? If it’s purely for the fake engine noise, you could sound proof the actual speaker with sound deadening to suite your taste, or does it come from all the other speakers too?

@@TrackandBuild Did you find evidence of that speaker, or are you just guessing? I was thinking that maybe part of the sound module wiring harness/connector is a simple speaker output, but it looks tricky to put a scope on it and look for things that seem audio-like. Somehow I think it's part of the CAN bus in the car, and may be piping (digital) sound to the main stereo/audio unit of the car. That's just a gut feel, no actual evidence on my part. I WISH it were a speaker somewhere, because then it should be fairly easily to get a variable attenuator of some sort and control volume to wherever one likes it. Even better, low-pass filter it so that you only get the low notes, since IMO that's the best part of the added fakery, since the car doesn't inherently (stock) have much deep to it.

As much as I hate to admit it, fake sounds better. 🤷‍♂️

I put the mic close to the glove box so it sounds louder

That is the worst fake sound ever. Even Gran Turismo 1 sounded more realistic.

So pathetic that we’ve come to a point where vehicles come with a fake sound option..

Wow it sounds so awful. Like, cool, put in some fake engine noise if you want to Toyota, but at least make it sound like a real engine and not a vacuum cleaner.

Noise does not equal power. I hope everyone with loud pipes gets an hour of sleep before their next super important meeting or evaluation.
Piped in fake sound just proves my point; it’s mental, get over it
