My dog was resting and looked at me alarmed when the cabin noise switched on. Turned it off and he relaxed. I played it a second time and he reacted the same way. Yeah, I don't think he would like that car. We have AC, an air purifier, and fans going in this room and he still said "what is that? I can't sleep."

I have owned and appreciated Lexus RX hybrids since 2008. Loved them. When time came to replace the 2008 RX last year I was sooo excited about a Lexus EV offering. Then the comments started coming - more or less like what you are saying. Then the dealer said they a taking reservations at $1000 but they expected to receive the cars at the rate of one per month, so it would be two years to receive a mediocre car w limited range… grrr. Needless to say I am happy with my 2023 Bolt EUV. Lexus really muffed it with this ev, sorry to say.

It's really sad that a Bolt EUV is a better car than one twice the cost, but as a bZ4X owner... Yeah. The Bolt is better.

Wow, hideous. Toyota/ Lexus get the BEV about as wrong as they can without being totally obvious that was their intent. They CANNOT be this clueless about automotive design as they build a number of good cars.
Thanks for this brutally honest review of a car in which I have no interest.

The front looks like they used ideas from the two different styles of Toyota Camry (XV70), and Toyota Mirai.
Question is why did they want a Lexus that looks like a Toyota ?

How can the Lexus make the Toyota look worse. The sentence does not make sense given the negativity of the review, I guess the reviewers actually mean that the Lexus is so bad that it makes the Toyota look good? Nonsense! The Toyota, Solterra and I am sure the Lexus are good cars with excellent build quality (Tesla?) Have had a Solterra for 8 months and am very content.

I’m truly astounded at how cynical Toyota is in putting this out. It the vehicle that they point the finger at and claim that BEV’s just aren’t up to scratch yet, Mr Biden, see…! But it’s THEIR car. Hahaha. Loved the Basil Faulty reference.
But seriously, this can only be in existence because Toyota just doesn’t want BEV’s to work. That’s the only thing that makes sense of how terrible this vehicle is. And you hitting it with a tree branch really is NOT out of the question. I know that in Australia’s terrible charging infrastructure environment, this vehicle would be left on the side of the road after the battery has died and you have put a bullet into the front motor to put it out of its misery, leaving it for the carrion to consume it. Nope. This is Toyota’s big middle finger to the world. When this company collapses, I will point them in this vehicles direction and push them both into the abyss.

The further I got into this review, the more I came to that conclusion. It is Toyoda's idea of what a EV will be, not an exemplar of a good BEV, let alone a luxury one.

I think the RZ450e and the BZ4X are a good litmus test for reviews. If they make them seem like nice little cars you know they are too compromised by needing to keep in good with the car companies. You can tell Transport Evolved doesn’t owe anything to Toyota. Maybe Toyota can make a good electric car, but they haven’t bothered to do so yet.

It looks like a metal cicada to me. And that is not a good thing.
I thought BMW had reached something of a low point in car styling. But Toyota seems to have taken that as a challenge.
But that road noise! I agree Nikki - the mark of luxury is a quiet car. This is why I think the more expensive option versions of all cars should be clearly quieter, not just filled inside with unwanted junk and the outside fitted with meaningless trim changes.
Then we start to hear that it is the physical embodiment of a nanny state. Toyota has lost it's way.

One Lexus engineer: "We need to add power and have AWD because it is a higher end vehicle". The other: "No more space for a bigger motor on the rear axle". "Okay then, let's put a bigger one in the front bay". "It will change the car behavior, lower the autonomy, increase weight and noise, and BTW not much place for a bigger battery" said the second. "Good work guys, we nailed it, let't go for it and also, what a marvel your armrest cover that opens from both sides" congratulating themselves at the end of the design meeting.

I really liked my 3rd generation Prius and drove it for nine years. If Toyota had built a BEV version I'd almost certainly have bought it. It seems to this layman that this would have been an easy option to offer; surely it's simpler to build a BEV than a hybrid?
When I switched to EV I went for a Leaf (due to the V2H support) and can't see me ever buying a Toyota again. It's not just their mediocre BEV cars and (IMAO) stupid hydrogen fixation; their politics (anti green/BEV lobbying) is a real turn off for me.
There are so many good EVs on the market now, why would anyone buy a Toyota EV? (Unless they're someone with misplaced badge loyalty, I suppose.)

This feels like it's been built out of reject ideas/parts from the BZ4X.
    1. Front bumper based off ideas used in the Toyota Camry (XV70), and Toyota Mirai.
    2. The 150kW front motor, but only 80kW rear motor, was this really their 'solution' to increasing the drive power ?
    3. Same exact battery as a car with less weight, less motors to drive, less gadgets to drain the battery.
    4. Interior parts which are inconsistent quality/style/feel.
    5. That stupid cheap steering wheel.
    6. Whatever gremlins give it that much road/interior noise.
Having an almost double the power motor with 150kW at the front, with no up-rated rear motor exposes flaws with the e-TNGA platform.
Did the engineers simply forget to make both motors able to be mounted in front and rear interchangeable ?
Or were the engineers supposed to make a 150kW rear motor as well, but management refused to pay for the work ?
Maybe Toyota are just trying to kill off the Lexus brand, and this is their opening salvo.

GJeebs reviewed this car next to his Model Y and gave it a good review and I honestly don't know why. As a Model Y owner myself let's get something straight. The Model Y isn't a luxury car. You don't put faux leather seats in a car and call it luxury. That's not how that works. It would be like putting leather seats in a Corolla or Camry or a Nissan Rogue and calling it luxury.
OK, not that's out of the way, the Lexus is considered luxury. In the case of this model it's a sport/luxury. But also having owned a Lexus LS400, the luxury on this one is a sleight departure from the way they used to do things. Some for the better but much of it worse now. It seems Lexus is definitely cutting some corners. That being said it is way better fit and finish than the Model why. I say this even though my Austin built M-Y came flawless.
Many of the Lexus vehicles share much DNA with it sister brand Toyota. This has always been the case. Take a look at the LS300 and Camry. That's not always a bad thing that they do this but in this case with this EV they really went in the wrong direction. They would have better luck designing this EV from the ground up as far as drivetrain. I think they would have been better served to do more extensive R&D on a vehicle that could get EPA 350 miles or more given that their competition in the luxury segment is near, at or above these numbers in milage for about the same price or less.

It will be negative. I have a Solterra (8 months) and I am very satisfed. Note the build quality ( an importan factor too). Note also that the driver attention monitor is easily switched off, so not a negative factor. Suffice it to say that all in all the Solterra satifies our needs - also long road trips. All this banging on about range which in my experience is exaggerated.

I have the Subaru Solterra (essentially the same as the Toyota). Like the Lexus here, it also has driver attantion monitor. Irritating, yes but it is easily switched off. Which I have done with the Solterra. So, no reason to get ones knickers in a twist in this regard. (I add that I am very satisfied with the Solterra despite the bad press. Reckon I would be content with the Lexus too.)

During my life I have had a lot of cars and this Lexus RZ450e is the absolutely most comfortable car I ever have driven when I'm looking at what is comfortable for my driving. We have choosen the 18" wheels because they give an even smoother ride in the already very comfortable driving, they give longer range and less wear of the tires. We wanted a car where we didn't have to drive around with a bigger battery than we needed most of the year. As known the battery is the less invironmentally friendly part of all ev's, and this is also an reason why we didn't want a longer range than we need in our normal driving. And for some people a comfortable ride is more importent than range and handling like a race car, and after comparing reliability and responsiveness I'm not missing the prombles I know a lot of people have faced. If I would be allowed to give an advice to some car testers, I can tell that a lot of us are not interested in the taste and wishes to the car testers, but would like an objectively review about what sort of driving the car is good and best for, reliability for the brand etc., and of course not be spiteful of what some other poeple would like to have. I'm not an expert or car tester , but I follow the car industry, have driven some cars and at least I know something of the wishes for my friends, what they want to use in their lifes and what sort of advice they want to have. I'm sorry, but for me this review was a crash.

You got to hand it to Michael. He is very charitable. Seems like the worse a car is, the more glamour shots he'll take of it. I can hear his thought process, "This car is a turd. This car knows it's a turd. Well I'm going to polish it up, shoot it in some of the coolest areas of Portland, find the best angles, throw in some filters and let this turd of car feel good and pretty for a day in it's turdy existence. That's all I can do."
Anyway, on an earnest note, the whole TE team does an amazing job but Michael really zhuzshes it up. I've never given Portland much thought, not even after watching Portlandia. But watching what Michael does with the place, makes me think, "Hmmm, Portland might be worth a stop one day." Now if my state would pull it's head out of it's intergluteal cleft and vote in a regime change so it's safe for them to travel here, I can only imagine how great he could make OKC look. 🥰

Great review and details. I’ve commented on this before that I don’t believe that Toyota wants you to buy their current electric cars yet. Have they gotten the timing wrong in predicting the surge of the EV market? Possibly and for sure they’ve done a crappy job at public relations. But before you believe that Toyota has not been researching and planning for better EVs to come later then you might want to consider a few things. 1. Unlike Tesla (Tezlah) Toyota didn’t start in the 21st century as an electric car maker. They make millions of ICE and Hybrid cars and can’t switch to making millions of just EV cars right now because of > 2. Battery supply is currently limited and battery tech is still improving so it still makes sense for them to make a lot of hybrid cars instead of a few BEVs at this moment. 3. If we are to believe Toyota’s claims they are hard at work on solid state batteries to come later this decade when they hope to bring lots of new models on dedicated EV platforms. I hope this is so and that they and other manufacturers can offer vehicles that regular people can afford instead of the trophy cars and trucks for the very well off that we have now.

This time, I am not in agreement with Nikki. Generally, I like her style and delivery but having a Solterra for 8 months I am very satisfied. (Tip: I found how to switch off the driver attention thingy - which, in general, reviewers seem to be unaware of this possibilty since they do bang on about it. So, absolutely not an issue). As for range, I have driven on several long road trips and after the first my range anxiety evaporated. The build quality, not surprisingly, is excellent (for me this is important if not crucial) noticeably so compared with other makes,😅 especially Teslas. I am very satisfied with the Solterra and by extension 😊would be for its family members the Toyota and Lexus. There are negative comments frome some reviewers concerning the styling. This, of course, is subjective, I for one, like the styling of these models; I do think the Solterra has the edge but perhaps it has grown more on me. I have the impression that there is a grouping of reviewers who jump on the moaning band wagon (although I note there are positive reviews). Also, I have the impression that owners of these vehicles are satisfied with some (like myself) being enthusiastic. It would be nice with some balance from Nikki and her friend. Shift focus a bit; for 😅balance, what are the positives?

Something about the audio in this first half of this video made it really hard to listen to for me. I think it has something to do with the cabin noise combined with your attempts to suppress it, because it seemed to mostly go away when you started talking about cabin noise at 15:35.
Hard to explain exactly what it was, but it sounded like bad compression artifacting in low end, with occasional muffled popping and vibrations sounds. It almost made me feel slightly nauseous to listen to.

Thank you, this was interesting and depressingly predictable, given the head in the sand approach Toyota's CEO has taken to the changes in their industry. Well this is a car from the company that still, in 2023, is lobbying governments to relax legislation on pollution. The RZ450e looks like part of their strategy to put people off BEVs. I do not like SUVs or see the point of them over an estate, which is the safer and more capable and more affordable option. However, in my work I drive a lot of vehicles, a lot of miles ie in the last two days I drove a Lexus RXL 450h to Lanarkshire from Devon and drove an Audi Q7 back. Thankfully I'm driving more BEVs now than ICE cars. An SUV I have driven a few times now to various parts of the country is the BYD ATTO3. And it is an impressive drive. Unlike the RZ450e, it is competent on the road and it has an honest 260 mile range. It is well screwed together and is proving popular. Wind and road noise on the motorway is very low ie noticeably better than the Lexus and Q7 I've just driven. (I have driven many Q7s and the road noise from the bigger posser option wheels is dreadful. Thankfully yesterdays Q7 had the more sensible items) I have owned BEVs now for well over 4 years, the oldest being a 2013 Zoe and I look at this offering from Lexus and see a car that would have been okayish 10 years ago, as long as you pretended Tesla didn't exist. Some are saying that Toyota (and their world record levels of debt} are not going to be around for much longer. Even if they survive, I've no intention of buying a car from a company that is holding back our transition to a survivable future. Love and best wishes to you all at TE

I bet Toyota pushed this car (along with BZ4X) out so they can point to the customer disappointment and poor sales and say "see nobody wants EVs let's go back to fossil fuels".
My 6 year old Ioniq gets 150mi on 30kWh. 71kWh should get 350mi. Anything less and it's an incompetent, unworthy car.

Well, the original 2012 Tesla Model S managed to get a longer range with a smaller battery pack - and is still in almost every way superior. Toyota/Lexus has seriously blundered when they made this inferior to a decade old car in the same price range!
It's almost as if the Toyota/Lexus engineers were determined to make their EV worse than their other models. In a truly "Kodak" moment, they are desperately trying to protect their existing ICE hybrid market against the inevitable pure EV future.

Maybe Toyota could just make a deal with Aptera and give them 50+ Million USD so they can start production. Then Toyota could build it in license and sell it as "Prius 3W 2024" or so. Prius was a innovative, technologically advanced car back then in 1997 to 2017, but since then, Toyota lost their leadership and seems to have switched to the dark side, even lobbying against EVs - time to catch up and surpass.

Toyota has, and does make some of the best most dependable cars in the world. Toyota should just keep making incredible hybrid cars and get us close to 100 miles per gallon.

Please tell me your opinion on why Toyota is so poor at BEVs and so good at hybrids?! I’d also like to know why they are not making a full BEV Prius, it seems to be a logical next step for them. How can it be that they are losing the race to GMC and their Bolt EV. I’ve also noticed that the new redesigned Tundra has missed the mark too. A v6 turbo engine with a similar setup to Ford with the motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission. Still from what I’ve heard, not really better gas mileage than their old v8 engines, what is happening with Toyota?

So its the RX4xxH and thr Highlander Hybrid all over again. I can personally speak this same issue with 2008 HiHy and 2010 RX450h. The HiHy had smooth power and felt waaay better on the twisties of Hwy2 and 20. Granted, the RX450 feels underpowered but smaller... discovered that the AWD of the RX450 was basically imaginary, no matter which drive mode, hybrid-pedal touch acceleration and deceleration. Its almost like the AWD system is utilized much differently (if hardly at all) than the one on the HiHy.
So yeah, for a company that I've driven & loved for decades now, its kinda sad.

Toyota today is not the Toyota so many fell in love with from decades ago. I do believe their leadership has failed. Aiko Toyoda and others are to blame.
I believe Toyota needs a ground up examination of their company culture. I do fear they have become like many large legacy builders that are bogged down in red tape and out of touch.
I know Musk can be an a--hole, but the Tesla and SpaceX organizations have remained some of the least red tape and it seems they are encouraged to keep leadership as horizontal as possible.
I know there are brand loyalist out there, but I hope they change their ways. Loyalty gets abused by corporations.
