  • One of the most technical dishes I’ve ever had. This former mafia getaway in the Wisconsin
Northwoods turned supper club is pushing for a more creative style of cooking, and bringing
the world to the midwest, through a weekend with a world-renowned Michelin Star chef.
In this episode of Wisconsin Foodie, Host Luke Zahm heads to the Northwoods to visit
Bootleggers Lodge in Tomahawk, WI. Bootleggers Lodge has a long culinary history in
Wisconsin from supper club to prohibition hideout. Fast forward to today, and new owner Brian
Hollnagel and Chef Maja Holcomb are adding a modern twist on a classic spot, making it one
of Wisconsin’s edgiest fine dining and watering holes.
Bootleggers invites renowned Michelin Star Master Chef Hakan Thornstrom from Sweden to
exhibit a once-in-a-lifetime dinner and wine pairing that incorporates Wisconsin ingredients,
cooked in a Swedish style. As opposed to fusion, this is an innovative collaboration that uses
locally sourced products. For chefs, there’s importance in knowing where your products come
from, the story behind the meat for example, that deepens your understanding, reinforces your
respect for the world, and helps keep integrity top of mind. This root of love can be one of the
greatest tools in crafting a truly outstanding dish. Get ready for mouthwatering bite-by-bite
descriptions that will have you craving a piece of this new chapter of Wisconsin supper club
    evolution.

We only produce 13 new episodes a season for PBS, which usually premieres in January. We plan to create content specific for our youtube watchers in between seasons!

There is a windmill at the start of the road leading to Bootleggers. When my grandpa was about 15 years old he used to stand on top of the windmill as a lookout for federal investigators.
My family says Tomahawk protected alcohol production and thus protected those involved in production and distribution. It helped them economically.
To this day Tomahawk still protects alcohol to the point there is a bar, including every supper club, like every half mile. More bars than churches.

Hahaha, my Dad, who was there, got all too much screen time, however I know he enjoyed himself because it's almost midnight and he sent me the link to this video. He never talks to anyone past 8. Looks like it was a blast. I wonder if Bootleggers lodge has any events planned yet for 2024?

Unfortunately we went to Bootleggers based off of this episode. It was disappointing. Construction materials kind of haphazardly strewn near the entrance. My father ordered the special which was a noodle dish with prime rib. The prime was improperly trimmed and every third bite of the cubed meat was gristle that had to be removed from your mouth. In addition it was cooked to death. Truly disappointing.

Pass, too pretentious for me. Trying too hard

It seems pretentious but when you actually visit Bootleggers, it does not seem pretentious at all. It's a really laid back local place where snowmobiles overtake in the winter. Growing up I would consider it one of the "fancier" supper clubs in the area, kid views because maybe when we went there it was for family celebrations and thus it seemed more special. But jeans and t shirt are acceptable attire. Business casual if you want to dress up to go to bootleggers. Soooo not pretentious.
Best bartenders in town at Bootlegers was a lady everyone called Crazy Peg. She has since passed away, but again not a pretentious place.

I'm in Milwaukee on the North Side, an inner-city portion of Milwaukee. In total contrast to you I like the way this place looks, combining the rustic and the elegant. Beats some of the wrecked interiors, from destructive tenants, of duplexes and single family houses, sometimes roach infested or rodent infested, I've walked into.
