Honestly, I always fully understood Dash's grief. Yeah, everyone says it's greatly exaggerated and she took it too far, but...when you're that attached to a pet and you love it so much...any amount of time away from it can give you misery. Trust me on that. So, people should be less cruel to her. This episode is a lot of fun.
Agreed!!! I never understood why people and even her own friends were pretty oblivious to her grief. Like they recognized she was sad but like the way they reassured her was like apathetic in a way?
I love that this episode shows her going through the five stages of grief. Deniel:Denying that tortoises need to hibernate in the first place. Anger:The scene when she lashes out at her friends. Bargaining:Her thinking that stopping winter will stop hibernation. Depression:The now iconic crying scene. Acceptance:Her accepting that Tank need to hibernate and letting him do it. Just that they were able to show her going through all five stages so subtlety is one of many why I love this episode.
As someone who has lost two dogs, and a large number of fish, hermit cravs, and toads to the passage of time over the years, AND is currently taking care of a childhood dog in his twilight years, it hits hard. Especially if you consider Tank might be an unknowing emotional support animal.

In my opinion you missed hands down the biggest sin. When fluttershy starts crying after hurting dashes feelings, pinky a rarity say they start crying because they don’t like to see flutters cry. What about the fact that flutters cries a LOT more then dash, so when dash finally does her friends don’t even give her their full compassion??? Idk that ones just always really bugged me
Urgh, I never watched this episode (I didn't watch the ones that sounded boring to me, sue me) but I always hate it when the writers put Fluttershy on a pedestal above all her other friends. Yeah, she's nice and pretty and humble, we get it. No reason to treat her like a piece of fine china moreso than your other friends. Hmm... Can't think of a specific example. Maybe "Green isn't Your Color" fits the bill? But y'all know what phenomenon I'm talking about, right?
the worst part is this hits ME more than it will you because this reminds me of when i finally lost my cat to her age, and seeing RD in her bed crying her eyes out as her pet slowly "dies" it was too much for me at the time and i was crying, hell even when i see that part i still cry
In this episode I was just really suprised that rainbow dash cried *THAT* much. Cause she's usually not the emotional type and the last pony that would support crying your eyes out. I thought it was highly unlike her. Plus, wasn't Tank her pet before? She didn't seem to have any problems then. Or maybe she was too busy saving equastria to notice.
I know this was a long time ago, but even the most stoic of people will cry at the loss of a loved one. I know he didn’t die, but this episode really felt like it was trying to show that situation, without actually showing death. My father doesn’t cry often, I’ve only seen him cry a few times in my life. But the most recent was the death of our sweet kitty. A pet is apart of your family, and you love them as such. Being apart from them for a long time would still be heartbreaking. Waking up without them beside you hurts, so much.
The title already gives it away with the name pun that the episode is actually supposed to be about losing someone (Thanks for the memories). Tortoises can get extremely old, but I’m guessing that Tank was already very very old when Dash adopted him, given his size and all, so it would make sense to choose Tank of all pets. What I still very dislike is that they chose Dash and Tank at all. He was her first ever pet (and I think we can all agree that that loss is one of the worst) and she had him for only a few seasons, while the others had their pets for way longer. I honestly can’t recall if we ever saw him again in the later seasons or if they really ‘removed’ him from the show…

The dragons in the MLP universe are mammals. There are several scenes that Spike can be seen sweating, and sweating is exclusively a mammalian trait. Also when Spike is hatched he suckles his tail, that suckling reflex would only occur with nursing infants, and producing milk is also a strictly mammalian trait.
Wow, that's allot better than "belches literal fire, therefore cannot be cold blooded." I wonder if that means that Spike's "scales" are closer to a porcupine's quills, rather than reptilian scales. Still doesn't explain the fire-resistance, but I guess that is a theory for another day.

Doesn't Hearth's Warming Eve, an episode that takes place during winter, occur after May the Best Pet Win, so Rainbow would already have met Tank and thus already spent a winter with him? Also, when the screws fall out, there are no holes in the wall so what were they attached to?! 😂 Good thing Dash was planning ahead, and had a pair of pliers or a wrench on hoof to remove those screws.

I remember being annoyed that Dash was implicitly excused for all of her sabotaging of other ponies’ efforts, property damage, and the course of nature just because she was “grieving.” She’s never given a punishment or even a talking to, just comforted and gets over it eventually. In elementary school, I once knew a girl from a well-off family who started rooting through my mother’s purse looking for candy while she was chaperoning on a field trip. When the girl was caught, she started crying and made up a story about being worried about her sick grandma. Even if it had been true, that wouldn’t excuse her behavior.

In the Fall Out Boy song, Thanks for the Memories, there is a lyric saying "one night and one more time, thanks for the memories even if they werent so great" meaning Rainbow wanted Tank to stay longer and saying thank you for the memories he gave Rainbow. There is also a part saying "SEE HE TASTE LIKE YOU ONLY SWEETER!!!!!", remember when Rainbow first saw Tanks? Yeah< Rainbow had another pet but in the end, she picked Tank. And Tank is nicer and kind than the eagle.

i know im like way late to this comment section but one of the biggest sins in this episode is that tortoises dont hibernate either. they enter a state of dormancy call brumation but they are not in a true state of sleep during this period.

Still, that would require dragons to sweat literal gallons to sit in lava (even if it wasn't as hot as molten rock) for long periods of time.

I GET THE TITLE NOW!!! In the Fall Out Boy song, Thanks for the Memories, there is a lyric saying "one night and one more time, thanks for the memories even if they werent so great" meaning Rainbow wanted Tank to stay longer and saying thank you for the memories he gave Rainbow. There is also a part saying "SEE HE TASTE LIKE YOU ONLY SWEETER!!!!!", remember when Rainbow first saw Tanks? Yeah< Rainbow had another pet but in the end, she picked Tank. And Tank is nicer and kind than the eagle.
Every time I see the title of this episode I get the song "thanks for the memories" stuck in my head
"It's ok. Season 9 will come back in a few months" I feel like another good one would've been "Brace yourselves everypony, season 9 is coming" but idk if you could've done that with Twi. Both are still good. Here's to 2019 and another year of ponies! ❤

i know im like way late to this comment section but one of the biggest sins in this episode is that tortoises dont hibernate either. they enter a state of dormancy call brumation but they are not in a true state of sleep during this period.
No sin for rainbow bawling her eyes out and her friends only get upset after fluttershy crys or that they don’t seem to care that much even though they would be upset if they didn’t see their pets for months?
Bonus sin for dash not doing any research of how to care for her pet or asking her librarian friend cause if she did then she would've known about hibernation
