Boris Said Told The Intimidator To Make Him A Sandwich

  • Boris Said talks about how he got the call to fill in for Jimmy Spencer and how the team had no idea how green the driver was heading into his first time on track at New York's Watkins Glen Speedway. He details an opportunity that followed to test for the Wood Brothers and how that opened doors for him in the Stock Car world. The first big door to open was from one of racing's biggest stars, Dale Earnhardt. The Intimidator wanted Boris to teach his son, Dale Jr., how to get around a road course faster. And that he did. Said and Dale Jr. share details about their first meeting and how their friendship and respect grew.
    Oh, and y'all know we love a good Dale Earnhardt story! Boris has some of the best, including the day Dale Earnhardt fetched him a peanut butter sandwich. And if that isn't enough, Said will go down in history as one of the few drivers to ever hop behind the wheel of the famed #3 at the personal request of Dale Sr. It's a moment that had him grinning from ear to ear.

      The intimidator imgage he potrayed but yet the humble down home guy Boris talks about here, yeah that is Dale. The media gave him the image and he ran with it (beyond smart of his part), but in the end he had a heart of gold and was as humble as anyone, even if he didn't want anyone knowing it.

      @TheLocalLt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dr.Strangmeme there weren’t really that many road course ringers when Bobby Allison was racing or during Rusty or Earnhardt’s prime. There would always be a few, but the real age of road course ringers was in the early 2000s when teams started to keep struggling drivers in danger of missing the field at home, and instead hire a ringer for the weekend to make sure they made the race and picked up some owners points, this was even more the case after 2005 when the top 35 rule came in as teams without a guaranteed start would hire ringers to get them in the show, while teams barely ahead of the cutoff would also hire ringer to give them more of a cushion. Also sometimes rookie drivers would be replaced by a ringer so they could concentrate on perfecting the oval tracks.
      This all fell apart with the financial crisis as a lot of teams folded and the only teams left battling for the top 35 were underfunded or even start and park teams, thus the ringers usually ended up in these cars from 2009 onwards. The Cup drivers also got much better at road racing, so even on the odd occasion that a road course ringer is in good equipment they still rarely are able to contend for the win

    Damn I never realized how cool of a guy Boris is. Great show jr and mike. As always legendary guests. I sometimes imagine some of the fantasy conversations you could have with some the drivers that have past away over the years. Can you imagine how wonderful a davey allison conversation or a conversation with Alan kulwicki would be or seeing jr have his dad and Neil bonnett on together for the podcast in an alternate reality where davey took a car to talladega to see neil practice instead of the helicopter, and Alan stayed home sick instead of getting on that plane and Neil bonnett was able to find satisfaction in retirement and Dale sr ran out of gas before the last lap of the 2001 daytona 500, damn I can only imagine what Sr would think of all the technology that exists today and hear his thoughts on social media. But things happen for reasons unknown. 2 awesome episodes to start the season can’t wait to see what’s next.

    DALE I have always been an Earnhardt fan since I grew up watching your Granddaddy Ralph race at our local dirt track"The Old Columbia Speedway" in Cayce SC every Thursday night and we were at Darlington for both races every year. It was so cool because we were ALWAYS IN THE PITS at the dirt track and at Darlington so you could mix and mingle with everybody. It's not like now where you have to know someone to get credentials to get to the pit areas. Your Granddaddy Ralph was the only driver when he pulled in and the car was unloaded, NOBODY TOUCHED IT!! IT WAS RACE READY!! Everyone else was tweaking this or that whether it was Donnie or Bobby Allison, Buck or Buddy Baker, Tiny Lund, Cale Yarborough, Lee or Richard Petty and countless others. It was the best and I wouldn't trade my upbringing at the dirt track for anything because I was under cars and under hoods when I was finally big enough to walk.. LOL.. But I want you to know that your Podcasts are top notch and absolutely PRICELESS.. BECAUSE THESE PRECIOUS STORIES ARE AMAZING AND I NEVER GET TIRED OF HEARING STORIES JUST LIKE THIS ONE WITH MR. SAID MEETING YOU AND YOUR DAD.. I'M STILL LAUGHING BECAUSE YOUR DAD WAS INTIMIDATING AND A FORCE TO RECKON WITH.. OFF THE TRACK AND ON THE TRACK . PLEASE DON'T EVER STOP DOING THIS. THESE STORIES ARE AMAZING AND A LIFELINE TO ME AND THEY ARE PRICELESS TREASURED BLESSINGS 🙏🤗 THANK YOU DALE AND THOSE WHO HELP MAKE THESE VIDEOS POSSIBLE. GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU NOW AND ALWAYS 🙏 AND I PRAY GOD WILL CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU DALE ALONG WITH YOUR FAMILY 🙏❤️🤗 THANKS FOR THE BLESSINGS AND THE LAUGHTER 🙏❤️🤗

    I couldn't speak either when I met Dale Earnhardt and got his autograph , starstruck . I just blurted out I love you 😁 Then when he was signing my driver style jacket , I said make it nice and big so everyone can see it and he did . I was shaking all over ! We made eye contact and I couldn't move 😁💗

    Great stories. It's awesome to hear when drivers from other series get a chance to drive in NASCAR, they drop whatever they're doing.

    Damn, how cool was that! B was the road course guy for years, but I am 1000% sure I would have had the same reaction with ANY interaction with senior. Just so cool to hear Boris tell the story. Carry on Jr., love the content mate.
