    Without this video, I would not have thought to go look for the related information. Thank you for the insight. Previously, I blindly took a picture of the bearing and numbers, and submitted a purchase request.
    So the 3rd digit Series number is in some way related to the progressively larger dimension that you referred to; robustness.
    I respect that you did not know what it referred to exactly, but you did see the causal relationship. You did indicate your uncertainty related to that position designation; and I respect that you understand how to usefully share questionable information.
    That is how useful Common Sense works. A group of people with developed self-respect, contribute to a solution; productively indicating where they are unsure of gaps in knowledge, or uncertainty of relationships. The other team members help fill in the gaps where they are able, and similarly with developed self-respect indicate where what they contribute is uncertain.
    Together, as a group, we produce a more complete picture than what we previously knew.
    I appreciate the effort you took, and the quality in conveyance of information I received. I also appreciate the contributors that filled in the gaps related to the 3rd digit relating to robustness and series.
    Outright ridicule, contempt, unjustified emotional criticism, drama, or unrealistic expectation for completeness, are indicators of people who have difficulty contributing to the Common Sense of group efforts.
    This is TH-cam, not Wikipedia or a university course. Often while taking classes I would find discrepancies in textbooks, instructor provided information, and incorrect exam answers keys. That does not mean they were not useful in providing greater overall understanding. Instructors share useful insights to help broadly relate to systems of information.
    Virtually nothing anyone can say is a truth; it depends upon the constraints of the system being considered. But of what use is it to disregard everything presented; instead common sense uses information for the best overall benefit.
    Thank you theoverengineer for your video.

    The third Digit represents the duty for it will be used. For example. Extreme light load carrying bearings will start from 0-1 and high load will go from 4-5 and so on.

      Not for any of the metric bearings, ISO, DIN, JASO etc.. What standards are you having in mind? What`s the standard number?

    • @parthprajapati53
      @parthprajapati53 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think may be you are right because in mostly Indian bearings the 3rd digit stands for the duty of its use..like if the code is 3 that means it should be used for medium load.

      Higher load is identified with either c3 or c4 depending how much they need to expand at higher loads

    Hi. I have a automotive pulley that uses a NSK 6203DU bearing. I want to replace it with a higher quality bearing so I got a SKF 6203-2ZJEM.
    Any possible issues I may run into?

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jackson Cruz Nothing major. NSK is a top-of-the-line Japanese bearing, SKF is considered the best in the world, has better quality control - or so I hear.
      The DU is a light bearing with a pressed steel cage and a single-contact seal, made with an average radial clearance of 0.0008 inch (ISO stuff)
      The SKF has a steel cage and is an electric motor grade (means lower friction, is rated to take 200lb more dynamic load and can spin about 10% faster max 19,000 rpm. It may not have the oil seal on it at the point of sale.

      Thanks for the info. The SKF according to a spec sheet I reviewed has double metal shields. I'm going to go ahead and use it in my automotive pulley as clearly it is a better pulley than the NSK. Thank you for your reply.

      Only issue is replacing a rubber sealed bearing with a metal shielded is you cannot protect against moisture ingress only dirt. SKF v NSK? No genuine argument to favour one against the other.

    I could be wrong, but I believe the third digit (right to left) is the series, which reflects the robustness of the bearing. The series from lightest to heaviest are;
    8- Extra thin section
    9- Very thin section
    0- Extra light
    1- Extra light thrust
    2- Light
    3- Medium
    4- Heavy

  • @stefanpariyski3709
    @stefanpariyski3709 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Except for the information about determining inner diameter and radial play, I find the rest misleading or partially/completely wrong. Especially the part about what the third number means. The 60xx, 62xx, 618xx, etc. refers to the bearing series and nothing else. The only conclusion, that can be drawn is that there is an order to these series, in which the load rating rises for given shaft diameter.
    Engineers understand and read "those things", it's our job after all to choose the best compromise of parameters, that suits a particular situation. And few of us are suicidal.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you talk to SKF as they printed their company material wrong, on which engineers base their calculations. They all are making a mistake in their work.

    • @stefanpariyski3709
      @stefanpariyski3709 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you know that how? Have you ever done experiments of your own to make a model of a bearing and then prove it on a test stand? Because that is how the "wrong" formulas are derived, not based on couch science.
      Plus the same method of calculating bearing life and loading is taught in university by people who research these topics. You want to tell me these scientists also have no idea what they are doing?

    • @theoverengineer

      +Sanyasirao Senapathi Numbering comes from manufacturing tradition and is only loosely related to physical size. The available forming dies they had just got sequentially numbered and those became part of the bearing designations with only a loose relation to actual size.
      Similar case is sandpaper grit numbers, wire gauges and sheet metal gauge numbers. With wire and sheet, the gauge numbers loosely relate to number of passes through forming dies, abrasive grit numbers somewhat relate to the number of openings in a sieve per some area abrasive particles pass through.

      Good question. Current bearing code system apparently comes from manufacturing dimensions specs.
      They would run out of cutesie names like "Big bearing, Maxi, Mini, Fatso, Double wide ..." pretty soon.
      Simple naming systems work well when only a few sizes are manufactured, like battery sizes, light bulb socket sizes, screwdriver bit sizes, ...

      I think my PTC friend on top meant "intuitive" as in: a 10mm ID by 62mm OD bearing named as "6210" for example. That would be more "intuitive" than finding a code in a book somewhere. For someone that does not use these codes on a consistent basis I can see howit could be confusing.
