- The entire first half broadcast copy of this game (the second half does not exist) has always had serious color problems, sporting a greenish hue and making it look VERY unnatural.
I've majorly color-corrected it so that the Bengal uniforms actually look like they should and are no longer a dull pink. You can view before and after screenshots here to see just how screwed up it was -- ibb.co/album/j...
Last, but certainly not least, I've applied de-noising and detail enhancement to the picture and it is a lot cleaner now.

Great work as always!
Phenomenal job here, Dave. Pink replaced with orange. Does this Bengals fan's heart good.
"the second half does not exist" - this is just so sad. How??? Amazing/mind-boggling how short-sighted networks were with these games. Especially playoff games. Is it too late to fire these people who have no doubt mostly passed away already? SMH
Videotape was in its infancy in the late 60's and SUPER expensive (I've heard $20,000 per tape). The networks didn't have many actual tapes to play with, so they would record over games, shows, etc. With the cost of the tapes being sky high, not having many to work with because of the exorbitant cost, and that they figured there was no use keeping these games because from their perspective because they'd never get aired again, you can understand why they weren't kept. It's a tragedy for sure, but understandable. Its amazing that we have ANY broadcast games from that period to be honest. It isn't just sports games from back then that are rare to survive. There's tons of material from news broadcasts to one-off shows, etc that suffered a similar fate. Anything not shot on film was subject to it. It isn't until about 1977 or so that a lot of broadcasts exist, mainly because the home VCR market began to take off and people started recording games on their own.
Well done.
They did it with the ernie kovach show till his widow got a lawyer and got them to give tapes to her
Curt Gowdy was one of the best and it was an honor to watch and listen to a real broadcaster.
Just hearing Curt Gowdy gives me chills. In my mind, he is to the 70s AFC what Keith Jackson is to college football in this era.
Yeah, he was great. Him and John Madden and Al de Regis who is pretty good as Goudy sidekick.
@@rodneyrankin3878I liked him. My favorite was Charlie Jones.
You are absolutely right. What a voice..
@@bobma6342 ah, Charlie Jones. Great voice and a reliable play-play announcer.
The fact is, that anyone on television back then has an excellent voice, or at least an easy to listen to one.
Plus, they didn’t overhype individual players. At least, they didn’t treat them as anything more than remarkable athletes.
A lot of us on TH-cam really appreciate the hard work you put into this. It's such a treat to watch something that you haven't seen since you were a kid!
You're welcome :)
Thank you
I echo his thoughts. Thank you for your hard work.
Yes. Hearing Curt Gowdys voice is amazing. Haven't heard him in 40+ years.
This takes a lot of us back to formative years with our fathers. It does me.
As a lifelong Miami Dolphin fan, these games are indeed priceless!!! Once again my friend, thank you so very much!
Having been born in Miami, it makes me very happy I can still see the old Orange Bowl again anytime I like. We would drive by the Orange Bowl several times a week going wherever. Damn it had a great history and most of all, character.
For anyone wondering why the Vikes never won a Super Bowl, just watch this game. The team speed of the Bengals and Dolphins, especially in warm weather/artificial turf, is just amazing. The Bengals beat Minnesota that season, 27-0, and I had a bad feeling about the Super Bowl, which unfortunately was borne out later that January. Remember watching this game from the frozen U.P. of MIchigan--outdoor football and snowmobiling after the game! Thanks for the time machine!!
Yea...the Vikings lost to some VERY good teams in the Superbowl.
It's amazing to me how long Ken Anderson played before he won that MVP and went to the Super Bowl in the '81 season.
Thanks largely to Bill Walsh's tutelage, by 1973 Anderson had already blossomed as a quarterback. For reasons I'll never understand, Paul Brown grew to *despise* Walsh, and did everything in his power to prevent him from becoming a head coach. Brown, of course, was a great coach in his own right, but as a person he had (to his discredit) a tendency to be mean and vindictive.
Drastically better! Finally corrected. Plus the best opening music in the history of TV sports. The NBC Sports early '70s theme. My Bengals had a super talented team and coaching staff, but they had to play the Super Dolphins in Miami. Thanks Dave!
You're welcome Scott :) I just spent a couple grand on a brand new high-end PC to replace my 10-year-old dinosaur. I also started using Da Vinci Resolve as my video editor - it's what Hollywood pros use, and it's a billion times better than the 2015 version of Magix I was using. I'm also starting to use software picture enhancement as well. MAJOR upgrades on my end.
@Dave Volsky's Back Door That's awesome Dave. The quality shows through too! Can't wait for your future restorations.
A legendary NFL opening along with the best music of any intro. A lot better than the smart-alecky garbage that you get today.
So now there’s problem with the music intro
Dave Volsky, you're a legend for this stuff. I love it! Keep it coming.
It’s strange that so many original broadcasts from the early 70’s became only dim and fading memories over 40 or so years and then suddenly many of them get posted on TH-cam and the dying embers of my mind are reignited!
As painful as it is to re-watch this, it's still absolutely captivating to see it restored so well. These were the Bengals I grew up on. Despite the loss, it's cool to be able to see them again, only now with a greater understanding of the game. But...
20:04 Losing RB Essex Johnson on their very first offensive play was devastating. As a kid at the time, I knew Miami was heavily favored, but didn't appreciate how critical a part of the Bengals offense Johnson was. He was their leading rusher in '73, finishing a whisker shy of 1,000 yards. Not that Cincinnati would've won, but losing him was a huge blow to their chances of pulling off any upset. Csonka had only 6 more yards rushing than Essex Johnson in '73. Imagine Miami losing Csonka?
Unfortunately, it wouldn't be the last time Cincinnati would lose a key player to injury on their first offensive play in the playoffs, thanks to Kimo vonWhatsHisFace. ~sigh~
Fun fact: without at least a Top 3 rushing attack AND a Top 3 scoring defense, Bob Griese never won a single playoff game. But he's in the Hall of Fame.
Ken Anderson never had anything _close_ to that kind of support for even a single season, and yet blows Griese away in every statistical category.
One played on a great team. One was a great QB. Hall of Fame voters conflate team success and individual prowess.
And Essex Johnson would have scored too on the play he got hurt on
Johnson's replacement, Lenvil Elliott, would later gain much of the drive yardage that culminated with "The Catch" in the '81 NFC Championship Game.
But not a painful as those 3 Super Bowl Loses.
was a huge fan of kenny anderson in the 1970s, he was so accurate. they just couldn't quite match up with the steelers and raiders
Went to the game as a very lucky kid. Those were spectacular times. Shula was the Godfather of Miami and the Dolphins were dynastic. A Hall of Fame offensive line across the board, one of the GREATEST backfields of all time, a QB great and a cohesively awesome No-Name defense (sorry, Al DeRogatis!). From 1970 to the bitter end in 1974, there was NO better period of time in Miami's history. Simply glorious and singular times to be alive and privileged enough to know the Orange Bowl the epicenter of the football universe.
Just think if they had Marino then.
@@MadMax31577 didn't need him. Marino landed at the perfect time and had the perfect season, save for a SB win. He's The Godfather of the modern passing game.
Griese. Was underated. So. Smart
The. Cowboys. Were an. Achilles. Heal. For the 49ers in. The. Early 1970s
Absolutely crazy to see Lyle Blackwood (no.29) in a Cincinnati Bengals uniform in the Orange Bowl at 8:43. With his brother Glenn, the guy was a legendary member of the Dolphins’ Bruise Brothers in the early 1980’s.
one of the "Killer Bees"
It’s shocking the lack of emotion displayed by players from both sides-sacks, touchdowns, or incredible catches are all part of a day’s work. Only mercury really shows some emotion given how well he was running in the 1st half. It’s a striking difference from today’s game
Back when players weren't out for themselves and played as a team. I wasn't even born till 1972 and I never saw any of this in real life, but I long for those days. I cannot even watch modern-day sports anymore because of its overproduction and focus on individualism. It's all about money, politics, and showing how 'woke' you are. Haven't watched a second of the NFL since 2014 because I just couldn't take all that crap anymore.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Well put, Dave.
That's cuz the players weren't making a lot of money back then
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673Football is still a pretty tough physical game. When modern players hit the field nothing "woke" about it
@@Pauln71Well I know that's not true, but even if it were, I'd never know because I'll never devote one second of my time to the NFL ever again.
Mike Reid of Cincinnati grew up in Altoona, PA, near my little hometown of Claysburg. I never got to see him play football because he retired from the NFL when I was only 5 years old. But it's great to see him play in old videos like this.
That was some great music NBC had back then. I had forgotten that introductory theme they had.
This is such an unbelievable treat for those of that were kids when this game was played.
I'm 57 now , and I got a agree 😊👍 I literally feel like a kid again when I watch these 😁👍👍👍👍🏈🏈🏈🏈🍺🍺😁😊👍...
At age 63 this brings back great memories. We were living in southern Minnesota and were huge Vikings fans. We rarely missed NFL football Sunday afternoon. Love the commercials as well.
Wow! Just watched the opening and a random play in the middle, but, THIS IS FANTASTIC WORK! Thank you.
Thanks!
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 I know some of it is due to my age, but I just feel like it was a better game in the 60s / 70s / 80s. Thank you for doing the work that the NFL SHOULD be doing to preserve its heritage.
This had me at "Happy Holidays, everybody... Curt Gowdy with Al DeRogatis..." Just a GREAT pairing of announcers, one of the very, very BEST. *thanks again, Dave!
Bill Walsh basically ran the Bengals' offense as OC and develop his famed 49ers' West Coast Offense here. So it was fitting eight years later he would win his first Superbowl against this team.
That's not fitting to me. I feel like we've been robbed by who Paul taught. Not just Walsh but Shula an Knoll and so much more. At some point in time charma will turn the pendulum!
This was the 1st NFL playoff game I attended. I was 14 from Kentucky and a huge Bengals fan. We spent our Christmas' in Sanibel and had driven over on alligator alley for the game. Just remember the crowd yelling " bomb um Bob, " which they did, beating us handily. Too bad we no longer pray before games, another sign our Country has gone astray... That was a great day tho, even with the "L"
Guy playing with a broken arm and wearing a cast. Deshaun Watson gets and Ouchie wouchie woo woo on his shoulder and he’s out for the season.
Ouchie Wouchie woo woo? Is that latin? 😅
Always great to see a game with Ken Anderson and Curtis.
Looks great, 1971,1972, 1973 dolphins are a fantastic dynasty
Cowboys 24-3 over the dolphins n Super Bowl 6 but u guys had a good run winning the next 2 I believe over Washington & Minnesota
Took a miracle from Ken Stabler to keep them from going to 4 straight superbowls.
1972 Dolphins the most overrated team in Sports History. Played what might be the easiest schedule in NFL history.
@@WillMuny The goat 🐐: 1927 Yankees, 1972 Dolphins 🐬, 1986 Celtics. Most overrated athlete of all time Cassius Clay.
The only thing that stopped that dynasty was that joke semi pro league, the WFL
Remembering the game when it was a game of men Dolphins fans since 1970❤
Horst Muhlmann. Funny how even in '73 some guys looked like they were beamed in from 20 years before. Thanks, Dave, this is fantastic.
That's a name I remember. He was actually born in Germany during WW2. It's amazing how this seems so long ago but as you get older time flies by. I was 10 when I saw this game not way older😊. Love these videos. I learn a lot from those players playing then compared to now.
Warfield was the best and so smooth. Imagine if he was playing now.
I was to young to watch this game but watching football in The 70-90s was special. There were cool celebrations back then like Billy White Shoes Johnson & the Redskins fun bunch, not the silly stupid stuff they do today.
Nice touch to add the second half highlights from NFLF. Makes it a satisfyingly complete presentation. Great job. I wish the NFL was as dedicated to its history as you are, Dave.
Also, it's great to have a new Volsky production. It's been a little while.
Thanks George. I was on hiatus for a month or so while I replaced my 10-year-old PC with a top-end system and new video software :)
Well, I can't think of anyone who deserved a new, top-end system more than you. Can't wait to see what you're going to do with it.
That opening NBC theme is one of the best pieces of sports music ever written. Regrettably, as I'm sure you of all people know, it's not complete as it's missing the opening bars. Also, as you most likely know, there are a couple of versions out there that are complete, though they have a few issues of their own. Still, I'm thinking that you might be able to fix those issues and append the music and footage to this show, if that idea appeals to you. The links I'm aware of are th-cam.com/video/eynkDzJ1gA8/w-d-xo.html and
th-cam.com/video/o1PqBJnoxgg/w-d-xo.html.
One other thing: I've been searching for years for a clean (i.e., no voiceover) copy of the old NFL on CBS opening theme from the '60s. It's an instrumental version of the song "Confidence" from the Broadway play "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". I've never been able to track one down, and I don't think you ever had it on the old (much missed and lamented) Dave Volsky YT page. Still, I could be wrong. Do you have it? If so, could you put it up? I'd love to hear that piece again without Don Criqui or Pat Summerall talking over it.
If you thought the Bengal/Dolphin restoration was good, just wait till you see my next upload :)
I've never come across a full instrumental version of that track.
Yeah, it doesn't seem that there's an available copy of that track. If you haven't found it, it's probably not going to be found.
Can't wait until the next upload!
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 ❤
Looks brand new! Thanks for your efforts Dave!
Curt Gowdy and Al Derigotis were the best. Those car ads were just readjusting to the gas price jumps of '73 -- suddenly mileage mattered. And the slower pace of the intro and pre-game activities. Live televising of the opening invocation and Mike Douglass singing the national anthem. By the '90s, channel surfing meant networks had to get right into the action and use lots of loud, pushy buzz words to grab and keep the viewers fickle attention.
Some of your best work. you can see so clearly the details of the turf and on close ups even nicks and scrapes of the helmets.
Funny seeing Bob Trumpy playing in a game on NBC when in a few years he'll be a color commentator for NBC. Also, Miami's white uniforms were so tight and fresh back then.
One thing I did notice is that some Dolphins had their dolphins head on the sunburst (Jim Mandich & Vern Den Herder, among others) while the rest had theirs in the middle. It’s the first time I’ve seen a logo for any team out of sync.
SO this is what a team with a legit running game and defense looks like. Not to mention a super smart QB and head coach. Wonders never end.
Everything was so simple and awesome back then sports ….music….movies….pop culture. So much fun without the internet which has screwed things up.
For the year, the video quality is rather amazing. Colors seemed spot on to me so well done.
Oh my, I had forgotten that opening orchestra-driven NBC Sports theme music. Great blast of nostalgia. I watched this game as a 12-year-old kid--was a die-hard Dolphins fan. The Sea-of-Hands playoff game against the Raiders the following year, which ended the Dolphins' reign at the top, was one of the most painful losses I can ever recall. Might have been the worst, since I was still a kid and didn't really know how sports works, or the world, for that matter.
I always wondered if dolphins won the sea of hands game to Only see them lose to steelers, but I would have rather them to lose in Pittsburgh in championship game regardless, would've liked to see match-up with steelers even if they did lose, maybe closer than raiders loss to steelers match-up in championship game '73
Amazing (as always!) Thanks for what you do! This is wonderful history to watch - like it's on live..
Somebody preserved this divisional playoff game, but nobody bothered to preserve The Sea of Hands game a year later. Life's not fair!! 😅
Thanks so much! Always loved that NBC opening too
Man, this is beatiful. It looks accurate and clean while retaining a vintage feeling. This feels like what the game must've looked like on an actual TV in 1973.
That is if the antenna was set perfect. Otherwise we'd have static or snow on the tv. Remember most of us didn't have cable, we used an antenna.
I miss the old uniforms Bengals should wear those helmets again during the season.
@@DeplorableJaredBrodersen Yeah but maybe it just brings me back to a better time in my life when I was a kid they had those uniforms.
Thank you Dave, been waiting for someone to post these 1970s playoff games....outstanding work in the restoration.
I was hooked as a child in '72, at 8 years of age, thank you grandpa! Amazing remaster and sharing of this! So I can never forget those very epic years, coming of age. Damn, would give anything to see that magic again. Please? Before it's too late for me lol
This is the first NFL Playoff weekend I can remember watching. I watched my Vikings beat the Redskins on Saturday at 12:30 EST. It's the first time my parents explained to me what "playoffs" meant. I don't remember seeing much of the Steelers vs Raiders that day. I do remember this contest, on Sunday at 1PM EST. And my dad helped me realize how good the Dolphins were.
So nice to watch a game without the constant 20-minute pauses for replay challenges.
12:18, Damn Mercury Morris was a great running back. Also, best name for a player....ever!!
I was all of 10 years old at the time but already a die hard NFL fan. Miami was dominant in the Central Florida TV viewership but I never took to the team. Yes I did take to Cincinnati though. For some reason I always preferred Midwestern teams. Minnesota became my favorite NFC team. The Bengals my favorite AFC team. I rooted against any team who dared to defeat my favorites especially in Super Bowls. Still waiting for my favorites to win it all! 1970 is a long time to wait from lol!
I was a huge Vikings fan. We lived in southern Minnesota at this time. What a great time it was back then. Those commercials bring back memories. A commercial about ‘retirement’.? At 13 years old, I didn’t even know what that meant.
Life long Dolphins fan and this is a blast to watch. I'm sure I was sitting with my mom (God rest her soul) in the back room watching this on a little television set on our wooden desk. Great memories, seems like yesterday.
Miami IS in deed wearing Aqua trim and Dolphin logo and NOT green ! Great color correction!
Thanks!
The Bengals generated more offense on their opening drive than the Vikings did in the entire first half of Super Bowl 8.
This is wonderful. I wish the 1973 Steelers vs. Raiders would appear.
Dave Volsky for galactic emperor of the known universe! Another stellar job Dave. Thank you 👍
I can't think of a less appreciated top-tier quarterback than Ken Anderson.
You did a fine job with the video and thanks for uploading it!
Dave is the best. What a glorious era!
Csonka- what a force of nature.
Mercury Morris, one of the great and apt names in football history
I think I misspelled Larry’s name. Czonka , right? Or is it Csonka?
Csonka
Two HOF coaches. Two great quarterbacks. Outstanding receivers. But look how linebackers and safeties crowd the line of scrimmage. It's a totally different game today. More athletic. This was a brawl.
Amazing where the NFL has come to in 50 years!!
Dave, it's a special treat to see the broadcast material and NFLFilms back to back like this, best of both worlds. Brilliant work, as always. 👏👏💯
Thanks Jon! :)
Essex Johnson hurt his knee on the Bengals' first offensive play and was never the same.
Major knee injuries back then were career altering if not career ending
this stuff is awesome! was at this game at the OB (was 15) so this is 1st time I've seen on TV. that's Tim Ryan doing voiceovers
Back when football games opened in prayer, a patriotic rendition of the national anthem, and a general respect for the game.
Back when religion was forced on players let me guess you’re the type that stop watching football when “Politics” (Kneeling due to unfair treatment of blk ppl by POLICE in the USA) U call it players hating America who tf watched the game for prayers national anthem etc real men watch it for the play on the field.. These thugs have ruined the league type of guy..
The voice of AFL/AFC football!
5:05 They introduce the officials and their full time jobs.😲😲😲😲 Amazing how things have changed.
Looks so much better, Dave. Great job!
What a major GIFT!!! Thank you very much--LOVE IT!!!
First I wanted to thank you for your time and patience for putting this Chanelle together brings back memories of my complete childhood God bless you and your family.
Great job as always Dave.
Thanks Chris :)
One thing I notice watching these old games is the offense used to huddle about 10 yards behind the ball. At what point did they start huddling closer?
I remember that game. I also remember seeing the Orange Bowl in 2000 when I went to Miami near the Airport. Or after I got off the plane. That Dolphins team was very good too. The surprising Bengals had a good season
Thank you for posting this video Dave! I’m a new Sub to your channel! I played football 🏈 thru HS. My dream was to play for Penn State as a MLB in 1979…which reveals my age! After that on to Miami, if I got drafted & hopefully play for the mighty Dolphins 🐬 My dream was squashed because I was “Rudy!” (Lol) Watching this “Blast from the past,” jogs those memories & why my Fav team is the Fins!!!!
Played sandlot baseball with Issac Curtis in Santa Ana, CA, during the early 60s.
I love these videos! Ken Anderson was a great QB.
always loved that intro music as a kid
50 years ago this game was played, Wow 😮
Thanks for posting! I remember what a machine the Dolphins were in the '73 playoffs. I also liked the self-indulgent husband Die Hard commercial. :)
I love these old school NFL games, especially with the Dolphins. Thanks for posting!
Honestly, I had no idea that the Orange Bowl was turf....at least in 1974....
Poly turf
Wow a. Pre game invocation that definatly doest happen before nfl game anymore
Now this was the NFL I grew up watching! Just listen to that iconic opening & theme music by NBC!! Curt Gowdy & Al De rogatis! Don't get any better than that
Thank you so much for putting this together.
Amaxing high quality! Thanks dave!
And seeing that NBC NFL intro for the first time that clear and that detailed is also amazing, down to the cleats are putting on so clear
Wow! A Catholic Bishop 5:56 said a short prayer before the start of the game. It would sure be nice to bring this back before all sporting events.
it really would be. once one team did it (and didn't immediately cave to the oressure to change course that they'd certaintly get), just about everyone would follow suit.
Classic football,
those were the dsys!
The opening music really slaps
Wow does this bring back memories.
44:00 The Schick Injector system locks the blade safe, in metal!
Thanks, never seen any of this game other than highlights. I think it looks great!
Great work Dave.. u made a lot of people happy.. terrific work on these games.. anymore old Dallas gms would b greatly appreciated.. thanks again!
Curt Gowdy and Keith Jackson were my favorite announcers
Crazy playoffs rules back then. 1972 Dolphins went undefeated but still had to play AFC TITLE game at Pittsburgh. Next year, Dolphins were 12-2 and had to play AFC Title game at Oakland. This Bengal game was at home, but following week Miami lost in Oakland
1973 Title game was played in Miami , 1974 Divisional game was played in Oakland .
Great work, always appreciate your efforts.
“Kuchenberg playing with a broken arm”. Jfc
I just ordered KFC..52 yr old commercial still works
😂
The commercials are priceless
That Dolphin team was tough to beat. Great players who were fundamentally sound. I miss the days when teams ran the ball more and the old bump and run on the wide receivers. One of my favorite players was Kenny Anderson. Thank you, Dave, for posting this. Merry Christmas.
REAL FOOTBALL, PLAYED BY REAL MEN.
Always shouting for joy when the Volsky notification Bell rings!!!! And the content and improvement Never disappoint! Thank you,
