Photorealistic Misty Forest - Speed Level Design | Unity 2020

  • Welcome back to another video! I hadn't recorded a level design in some time so I thought it would be nice to get back into it. This scene was only meant to be a small static shot of an archway, however, it grew into a much more ambitious project with me ending up making a small cinematic using cinemachine. I think the whole scene came out really well, what do you guys think?
    Don't forget to turn on captions if you want to see some design insights.

    This is more Environment Art than Level Design because Level Design is more about designing of what will happen on mechanics of the level in fact like putting collectables, enemies, traps, where player can walk, when he have to jump, run, etc. Level interactions in general. But great work on Environment setup, lightning setup and cinematic! :D

    • @sketch3436
      @sketch3436  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree with you, however, unfortunately the general audience on TH-cam assumes these types of videos when you say level design. If I use environment art or design people tend to think it is just a 3d modelling tutorial.

    I'm imagining your beautiful artwork can be hung on a wall, on a digital frame to be admired. And perhaps we see the view slowly move around the scene and after a while changes to a new landscape scene to be admired and slowly move around it too. Sort of like on a screen saver, but a slow a photorealistic cinematic art on the living room wall.

    Hello, you did nice terrain) I tried to create realistic vollumetric light using vollumetric light script and vollumetric light renderer script, but... It doesn't work in my project. Did you have the same problem?(if yes, could you please say what's wrong?). And one more question. What spot do you use for Default Spot Coockie?
    Sorry for my English, I'm not from Eglish speaking country.
    Thanks)

    • @sketch3436
      @sketch3436  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. For the volumetric lighting make sure you have the Volumetric Light Render script on the camera and select 'spot' as the cookie (it comes with the package). Then place the Volumetric Light Script on the light you want to become volumetric, note that the effects only appear in-game not in the editor. Also, the effects will not appear in a build of the game, to fix this you need to add all the volumetric shaders into your built-in shaders, to do this navigate to Edit > Project Settings > Graphics.
      You can always view the demo scenes that comes with the pack first to make sure everything is working.
      Hope this helps 😊

    Another great video! Well Done! What pipeline did you use? I've always used Unity's Basic 3D template, used LWRP (URP) a couple of times and only used HDRP once only because I find it had to use the features they have and it messes up materials and you have to upgrade them (but doesnt work with trees etc.). Good idea for a video to go over the different pipelines and how they can change your scenery. But just want to know which one you use.
    Anyway, well done on this. Love the volumetric lighting used.

      @sketch3436  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

For all of my scenes, I make sure to spend a lot of time getting the lighting perfect, Use all the systems Unity provides such as reflection probes, screen-space reflections and light probes to maximise the realism. When all these components are working together you can easily achieve results that look like they were developed in HDPR. Hope this helps!

    Really inspiring for a project I'm planning! Got any tips for making a large survival game map?

    • @sketch3436
      @sketch3436  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I really appreciate it 😊. For large scale scenes, I recommend taking the time to plan it out and find reference material, this will ensure you are time efficient. When it comes to actually building the map a big mistake I often see people make is that the terrain is flat and then they have random spikes of mountains sticking out, this isn't realistic and instead, the mountains should deform the landscape creating a lot of variety in height (this also looks more appealing and interesting to the player). Yet again, reference material can help. Also, using the 'Terrain Tools' asset from the asset store in combination with the Terrain Tools from the package manager allows you to stamp brush on the terrain, this will allow you to stamp realistic mountains instantly, which is really nice. For more tips, I recommend my achieving photorealism video.
      Large scale scenes can also get really laggy, so performance is an important element. The most important tip here is to have LODs on all your models. For more info, I suggest watching my performance video.
      This was a quick overview of tips, but, I hope you find it helpful. Good luck with your survival game 😊.

    Great video if you can help me what degree you did for creating games and designing them pls an answer would be helpful from you

    • @sketch3436
      @sketch3436  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks 😊. I didn't complete a degree to learn what I have of game design, level design etc I simply started following along on YT tutorials and attempted to make some games myself after a while I started to get comfortable with Unity and found that I didn't need to rely much on videos for my projects, at around this time I started joining up with some indie projects which taught me more of how larger-scale games are managed and how to work with different departments. That sums up my entire journey with game development so far.
      If your thinking of studying game development I would recommend studying computer science since although it doesn't apply directly to game development it gives you a really strong understanding of computers and programming which is extremely useful when developing software, the design aspects of game development can easily be learnt by yourself in my opinion. Additionally, having a computer science degree allows you to go into a range of jobs whereas with a strictly game development degree you are kinda locked in game development, you always need to think of your future self just cause you're interested in game design today doesn't mean you will be tens years from now.
      Hope this helps 😊

      @@LiuBei661 Glad to hear. I have only ever released a prototype for a horror game (trailer is my first upload) that project was actually the first proper game I tried to make and it taught me a lot, although I feel I could do so much better nowadays. Other than that all the indie companies I've worked with still have their games in development two are planning to release this year though which is exciting.
      I would like to release some more games soon and potentially start a devlog series although with uni and working on the indie projects it's hard to find the time.

    Can you explane me where the hell post processing is in the newes versions?

    • @sketch3436
      @sketch3436  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Post-processing is different for different pipelines. So for HDRP and URP post-processing is automatically integrated into the project. However, for standard Unity, you have to get it via the package manager which you can navigate by going to Window > Package Manager then search for post-processing and install.

    Nice work, really. I noticed that at the end, lights and shadows coming form the fire are not moving with the flames (6' 46''). On a game why not, on a single scène its sad to not have this detail that chocked me cause its less realsitic that i excpected with the title and the reste of the content.

    • @sketch3436
      @sketch3436  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks 😊. Regarding the fire, yes I totally agree, if I wanted to maximise the realism and immersion I should have made the lighting flicker, however, I spent way too long trying to get cinemachine to work correctly so by the time it came around to things like that I just didn't have the energy, especially since I would have had to write a custom script. Next time, I'll make sure to get the flame lighting working 😉
