48v phantom power is not needed on the PR-781 since it's a dynamic mic. If you have the ability to leave it off I'd do that but I'd at least clarify that the 781 does not need phantom power so not to confuse your viewers. Otherwise cool video.
Hi there K0LWC, Great presentation! I've decided to follow in your footsteps regarding: a boom-mounted mic with a preamp feeding my IC-7300. Your video helped solidify my gear choice. I've had a couple of the AMP Tube preamps (different models) in the past, and they're great. Sometime when you have a few minutes, could you describe the wiring \ cabling \ and connectors needed to duplicate your setup in this video? Thanks for the great video, and thanks in advance for any details you could provide. 73 KF0GAW

With the power mods done on it this mic is just awwsome and no need to look to find a better one. The Body of the MH-219 is solid and feels comfy holding it in my hands! I actually run the Heil HMM for iCOM only. Those Mics are rare and hard to find
I use a dynamic mic called the Shure SM7B. This mic requires a lot of gain so I use a Cloudlifter CL-1. The Cloudlifter CL-1 boosts the mic gain 20db so you dont have to physically boost your mic gain on the IC-7300 radio. I turn my mic gain on the IC-7300 to 25% and the Cloudlifter CL-1 boosts the IC-7300 output gain to about 85% even the the mic gain on the IC-7300 is physically set to 25%. I also use the DBX 286 for compression if needed. It also has a voice enhancer (High and Low). I even use/added a focusrite 2i2.
The combination of the CC-1-XLR-I + the ART Tube MP studio V3 microphone preamplifier + Heil PR-781 also works very nicely with the Icom IC-9700. Good reports on both FM and SSB.
What cable do you need to connect the V3 pre-amp to the Heil CC-1-XLR-I ? (Nevermind, I figured out that the V3 has an XLR output and you use the Heil CC-1-XLR-I cable)
Wow! I was not aware of the preamp. And I have both the Icom IC-7300 and the Heil PR-781. I will think about this, though I am very happy with the Icom IC-7300 hand microphone.
It allows you to have more control of your audio, and also the ability to back away from the 781 so you dont need to swallow it. Without a preamp you need to be right on the mic, with a preamp you can adjust so you can sit back 6”-12” and still get great audio.
Hey thanks for the video. I just bought everything to do this exact setup. My question is what is your method for switching the mic from using it on your PC to the radio? Thumbs up for the video. Thanks again.
Hi Matt, thanks for this presentation - I use the low cost TONOR TC 20 with nearly the same setting - and it works fine - this video helped me to come to a good solution quickly without having to do lengthy tests - thanks for that! by the way - I use the StudioV3 smart aswell. 73´s de DG4SBZ

Did it work without the 1 microfarad decoupling capacitor? I tried with a behringer xenya 802 to enter the signal on the ptt jack. to pin 1 and 7 and put the brum. I have 8V there and it doesn't work. What do you recommend? Thank you very much.

Bob Heil recommends a capacitor in line on the hot pin.. Is this mod necessary to prevent damage to the audio circuit going through the front mic jack?. You can also go through the back of the radio without causing any damage to the radios front end audio circuit ..
the capacitor is used to prevent current/voltage (i am not sure) from radio to the mixer/microphone. this current/voltage is used to feed electrec or condenser mics.... +8V on icom's
Thanks for the video - you didn't go thru the required cabling. Did you use the AD-1-iC adapter? And if so from the PreAmp to the adapter you just used a 1/4" to 3.5mm TS cable to the adapter?

Make sure radio isn’t plugged in when doing this. - Set IC-9700 for USB audio as the microphone. - Use digital mixer (I use VoiceMeeter Banana) where you make the Focusrite the input audio source and USB Audio Codec as the output. - Have fun!

You mean using the preamp with the desk mic? If so, then more than likely not. The desk mics will have the connector for whatever is used the radios mic input and the preamp will have XLR and 1/4” TRS cables.
Interesting and well presented. What do you use for a cable (XLR to Icom round mic connector) between the preamp and the radio? Commercially made or homebrew? Is a blocking capacitor needed on the input XLR or is there one internal to the preamp? de W5AAG
As an audio enthusiast myself, it turns out i already have most of the audio equipment to actually do this. Will definitely be trying this out once I get the right cable adapter for my rig. I’m curious how the signal is being routed through your system. I see your connected the mic to the input in the preamp. Then you’re going out of the line out with Heil adapter to the radio? Do you have not have any issues with distortion or anything since your sending a line level into the radio? I also see that you’ve got the scarlet in the background as well. Do you happen to use that in the chain somewhere?
It’s a dynamic mic with no active element in it so you do not need phantom power. Either he was misinformed of that, but or he simply doesn’t know what it does.
Does anyone have instructions how to install the Amp? Do I need any special connectors or other devices? I am running a Icom 7300 and a PR871 just like in the video.
You just need a standard XLR cables that runs from the mic to the amp, and then the Heil Icom cable from the amp to the front of the radio in the mic port.
Depending on what version scarlet focusrite that is in thr background you have you could have just used that as a preamp. They have trs line level output which you could use to drive the mic input on the 7300.btw Alot of that low end you hear in your headphones from the preamp is not going to be heard over the air. For ssb KISS is all you need. A clean punchy signal is much more important than a boomy muddy tone that no one will copy.
"...as SSB operators we don't need to be [worried about all that high fidelity].." Yet, there is that EXTERNAL preamplifier, that gives you that "WARM SOUND..." 🤔🤣 Truth be told, those tiny [cheap] units do not provide a true "warm" sound. There just isn't enough high voltage on the tube to gain the true potential, or "warmth". For that you'll need to step into higher tiers of audio processing. And yes, you CAN hear that difference within the ICOM brickwalled bandwidth. Still enjoyed this presentation, though a year later. Keep these nicely produced videos rolling. 😎👍

Sounds like you got it. The red box is just used so I can feed my XLR mic into my computer via USB. Nothing more. I have pigtail where my mic can be fed into the radio and the USB audio interface at the same time out of the ART preamp.
Does using this preamp change how you set your tone controls for transmit on the 7300? You had a video with suggested settings for rag chew and pile up contacts, have changed them when using the preamp?

Wait a minute! You run a DYNAMIC mic with the Phantom power on? Dynamic mics don't need phantom power! Phantom power is for Condenser and Electret mics (and the occasional ribbon mic with a built-in amp 'cause the output is too low without one.) Usually it does no harm to have phantom power on, but there are a few classic/antique dynamic mics out there that phantom power will ruin.
Hiel pr781 is a dynamic mic and does not use phantom power? Your advising people to run 48v into there dynamic mic this is stupid. Condenser mics sure they need it not heil mics
I disagree with your review. The stock mic that comes with the radio is terrible. You have to practically swallow the Mic to get audio and it depends on where you speak into the mic to get a decent audio without getting audio Pops and syllabus artifacts from being so close to the to the mic. My Kenwood TS 590 mic can run circles around the crappy icon mic. Purchase a good microphone from any reputable manufacturer that makes microphones. I use my original MC 60 and the headphone boom Mic from Inrad ( w1). Good results from both and at the time not expensive. I give a thumbs down on the Mic but 5 out of 5 for the Icon 7300 radio. Excellent radio for the price and will be a keeper in my shack !!!
Sounds like you have an issue in that stock audio chain somewhere. I can drive the ALC with just 20% mic gain on the stock hand microphone. And that’s talking across the element at about 1”-1.5”.
could you describe the wiring \ cabling \ and connectors needed to duplicate your setup in this video? Thanks for the great video, and thanks in advance for any details you could provide.
You need a few things: - The Studio V3 - XLR microphone cable (male to female) - Heil CC-1-XLR-I Adapter Cable You'll run the XLR cable from the microphone to the Studio V3 input. Then you'll plug the XLR end of the Heil CC-1-XLR into the output of the Studio V3 and that connects to the 8-pin mic port on the front of your 7300. Mic --> Studio V3 --> Radio

Hi i was impressed with this and so purchased the art v3 for my 7300 and 781 mic , first impression was good on 20m &40m but then i went on 80m where i normally rag chew , on no all i got was rf interference , no mod , changed all settings , put large ferrite cores with 15-20 turns on all cables , but nothing would get it solved, so run without the v3 and no problem , guess i will have to sell it 😔
Is your gear in the shack grounded?
@@K0LWC yes you can see my channel on the shack build , i also moved the unit in a couple of different places but made no difference, other reviews say this unit is noisy , but for me 80m its un useable
Wait a minute! You run a DYNAMIC mic with the Phantom power on? Dynamic mics don't need phantom power! Phantom power is for Condenser and Electret mics (and the occasional ribbon mic with a built-in amp 'cause the output is too low without one.)
Usually it does no harm to have phantom power on, but there are a few classic/antique dynamic mics out there that phantom power will ruin.
Most multboxes these days all send phantom power, whether the mic needs it or not. If it’s balanced it’s not an issue.
It looks like a Kenwood hand mic.
Icom 7300 transceiver.
Hiel pr781 is a dynamic mic and does not use phantom power? Your advising people to run 48v into there dynamic mic this is stupid. Condenser mics sure they need it not heil mics
The RODE POD MIC is better mike. The HEIL PR781 is worse microphone.
What do you like about the Rode over the Heil?
@@K0LWC Have liniarity frecvency response and not bassy and muffled ! Cristal clear audio !
@@gratiandoboli6040 Every voice is different and they certainly are not linear.
You are ruin the ic 7300
Just use icom mic only
Lies
could you describe the wiring \ cabling \ and connectors needed to duplicate your setup in this video?
Thanks for the great video, and thanks in advance for any details you could provide.
You need a few things:
- The Studio V3
- XLR microphone cable (male to female)
- Heil CC-1-XLR-I Adapter Cable
You'll run the XLR cable from the microphone to the Studio V3 input. Then you'll plug the XLR end of the Heil CC-1-XLR into the output of the Studio V3 and that connects to the 8-pin mic port on the front of your 7300.
Mic --> Studio V3 --> Radio
What did you use to connect mic to radio as icom has voltage out on one pin.
I second that question. What is the connection between the pre-amp and the 7300, so the 8v from the rig is not in play?
The Heil CC-1-XLR-I cable blocks that 8v from the radio. That's why using the Heil Icom cable is critical.
