You don’t need an aesthetic: the power of being "unfashionable"

  • Your bestie is coquette, I dream of the soft life, your neighbor bought a Stanley cup to replace the Hydroflask. How we present ourselves and determine personal style (if you can even call it that) has become ever expansive to include more items and aspects of everyday life. Though it is not fair by any means, how you dress does matter, at least to the outside world - but we can make the conscious choice to prioritize cultivating our own perspective regardless of whether or not that aligns with our immediate environment, type beat.
I'd love to hear about what style and fashion means to you, and the thought process (or lack thereof, I think both are equally valid) behind how you represent yourself visually.

Yes! Beauty is a duty forced upon those women who refuse to be judged against the standard of "beautiful" or "fashionable". I'd even go so far to say that rejecting serving any ornamental purposes is the first step for a woman to gain real power.
Thanks for the good content Kate, you are going places. Keep it up!

I really love this! I think because of social media, there's a pressure for everybody to really care about clothing/be fashionable/be aesthetic. I've always been really interested in and enjoyed clothing and how I can express myself with it. I tend not to dress to trends much (although I'm a millenial who loves wide-legged pants, which happened because of living in Asia), which means I've also gone through some very interesting/ugly periods in my style. I've always thrifted, but nowadays I'm trying to do more upcycling, DIY, and mending of my garments. By modifying the things I already own, I can give them more personality and make them so much more fun for me to wear and style.
However, this is something I've always loved as creative expression! I hate that people feel a pressure to have the same kind of attitude when it might just not come naturally to them. I dabble in many kinds of art and crafting, so this is a natural extension of using my creativity in my environment to bring me joy. I think for many people, however, dressing well is just a route to social acceptance.

Sometimes I feel insecure about not having a specific style. But then I think that literally no one I know sticks to just one style. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just came agross your channel and I'm suprised that you are still relativly small for the high quality of content. Keep up the good work!
And as for how I express myself; I am a maximalist, I can't put my style in a category myself. I heard: art teacher, pirate, witch e.t.c from other people
