One of the reasons you might have felt why this felt so "Yena" - they released a video a few days ago about a bit of making of this song and the concept was her idea, the whole smile the pain away thing, she also wrote lyrics and even gave directions on how she wanted some scenes in the MV to look. Truly an Ace.

If you know, BIBI was not only like partner in work for Yena, but she is her bestfriend since they are in the same variety show called "Girls Highschool Mystery Club". So Yena was worked and found ideas together with BIBI. Even I heard from her showcase yesterday, the title 'SMILEY' was coming from BIBI's word when she listened to the sample of the song. Anyway I REALLY LOVE YENA AND I REALLY LOVE 'SMILEY'. Man I hope you will react to her stage performance and the album. Thankyouu PD

my theory: while the little boy grew up, yena became weak and went missing. because of the villain’s evil deeds. he was in that computer room/did a job where he was looking for her all these years. yena knew he could help her, that’s why she was near, seeking his help. he finally finds her. him turning back into a kid was to remind her of who he was (and also, child = innocence, happiness). this MV is a whole ass anime story 😭

  • @Ash081284
    @Ash081284 2 ปีที่แล้ว +95

There's a whole psychology and some other deep stuff involved in this MV, especially on things like acceptance... accepting that we all feel and go through a lot of stuff, good, bad, or maybe our positive or negative traits... but in the end, it's still us and what we can do is to accept that it is a part of us, but despite everything, we can still choose joy in the midst of struggles (as shown when Yena falls down. And then saying, "I don't care, I don't care what people say, I only have one life so I'll smile... even if it's lonely and dark..."
Despite her being the Smiley Hero that helps others and puts a smile on their face, she can still get tired and struggle, feel lonely and sad. She also gets her strength from people around her, that are supporting her and loves her. Also very much Yena as she always says she prefers being around people than being alone. One thing that reminds me is a saying that says, "usually, the person that always makes people happy are also the loneliest as well.")
By the way, if you didn't notice, the "Shady" guy dancing in front of the monitors is the same kid Yena helped catching the balloon at the beginning of the video. There was a time skip, as detailed by the words on the screen, "Where is Yena?" so it means there was a time that she was gone, so there was a lack of happiness, as signified by the snow storm as well. Then the guy was revealed as the kid when he passed the mic to Yena and also winked, thus returning the favor of kindness.

Anyway, you'll get what I mean more after you listen to the whole album. It's like Yena's showing 2 sides of herself. That's why it's perfect that she chose LxxK 2 U as the B-side to promote along with SMILEY... 2 opposite sides of the same person. Happy and unhappy (personified by Bibi here in the MV, the Frowning Villain, but Yena continues it in "LxxK 2 U" as the angry bitter girl, as well as the cautious girl in "Pretty Boy". Freaking cool songs, btw. Yena's raspy vocals there, especially during the slight rap parts, my ghadniss)
Then encouraging us all that if everything gets tough and tiring, we can take a Vacay... vacation ^_^ Putting "Before Anyone Else" as Track 1 is also kinda perfect, as it is a love song for IZ*ONE, WIzones and Yena's fans, Jigumi. Of course we're gonna cry, and then Smiley comes ^_^
I can truly say that Yena really did put a lot of thought in this album... the whole concept, story, the message behind those songs, everything :)
And for all those that hate this album or the song or Yena, just go listen and check the lyrics of "LxxK 2 U" instead. It's perfect for you XD
Well, that's just my take on this. That's all for my lil pep talk... haha ^_^
PS: Choose joy in the midst of trials. Smile
To whoever is reading this, hope you have a nice day! ^_^

I do think it's interesting how you see Yena as a rapper/talk-singer, considering that she -at least used to- see herself as a vocalist! I remember when they were preparing La Vie En Rose, Yena said that she wasn't confident in her lines because she wasn't a rapper! So the fact that not only did she pull it off, but she also pulls off this concept so well just really helps highlight her versatility!

Yuehua's A&R are insane. They are so good at developing concepts and styles that fit their idols perfectly, and I think the fact that this debut song is wholly and singularly Yena and wouldn't work for anybody but her speaks to how brilliant they are. With Everglow, it's already impressive that they can keep switching concepts and always maintain that Everglow identity, but Yena's style is a complete 180 from that and they still nailed it. Also YueHua's budget and video production show in this video and I'm so glad that they're doing Yena justice.

this song starts as a typical kpop song then BOOM it sounds like those pop-rock songs that was in trend when I was a teen. avril, disney, everyone used that style & it’s really to easy to like. I feel nostalgic. but it also is very fresh & sooo yena! I’m surprised by how her soft vocals fit this style too! she’s in her element!
also bibi didn’t overshadowed her & her part fit very well like the whole song was so well made

I really do love how these IZ*ONE member redebuts have fit them so well and have been so successful so far. As fantastical as this superhero theme is I love how natural it feels. Yena doesn't look like she's acting. She's really feeling it. Also, Bibi, feature of the decade. Anything she's on she kills and just from the credits sequence at the end I think she must have the most expressive face in Kpop. I kinda want there to be a thread of Bibi's villain character showing up in all of Yena's MVs from here on out.

I wasn't a wizone just casually kept up with their title track and a few b-sides, on top of that my bias was Chaewon and I knew nothing about Yena. That said even I could tell this solo PERFECTLY suited her, she shined so brightly and everything felt so right in this debut. The song is made especially well too, flawless composing even. I think that might be my disconnect is just not totally understanding the whole history of Yena and IZONE. But upon my first listen the vibe and musically it reminded me of HSM/CAMP ROCK or that Disney Teen Movie kind of song. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I think that's what I was reminded of when I first listened to this. But I think adding BIBI added the much needed weight that took it above that Disney musical vibe.

She's very not your traditional Kpop idol (in terms of personality, she's similar to yuqi in terms of comedy), she's also known to be a happy virus, which is why this song is so representative of her. Her goal has always been to make the people around her happy/spread happiness, because she was surrounded by a lot of tough times when she was a child. (She was diagnosed with cancer at a young age even the hospital told her family to give up at one point bc of how bad it was, and her parents had to sell kimbap every day to pay for her medical bills but she was eventually cured completely hence her goal.)

I've never watched PD48 or anything to do with the members personalities, but I have been keeping up with them post Iz*one like I did with PD101 and let me tell you, this song has made me literally so interested in everything Yena it's insane. Glassy started my obsession, but Yena's Smiley has literally cemented my love of the Iz*one members post PD48

Bomi can be proud of having inspired a cute girl at being a happy virus :) of course, Yena isn't the best voice of the industry so we can't expect a vocal queen performance but the energy of the song is really well carried by the character and we don't need more. A really really good debut! (and man Yena in every show does a perfect job, can't wait seeing her interacting with Apink one day :3 )

This debut is amazing and the song really make me smiling all the time.
I remember PD's suggestion in LIGHTSUM's Vivace about the last chorus after the bridge, this song does all the suggest you gave, low down instrument and come with high note.
About the story in MV, I saw someone's comment that quite interesting, I copy it here for you
(On the story is that Bibi is like the inner dark side of a person, and she asked in her last line, "can we be friends?", so it's like asking can both our good and bad sides be one? It's like accepting all our sides as one, accepting that we may cry, be sad, but at the same time, or at the end, we'll still smile and be happy. Bibi's ending is actually the post credits scene. If you'll notice Bibi's trademark on her face, it was a frown when she first showed up, but during the credits scene, it was now a smiley face. So maybe "they're friends" now. Acceptance and all that. :) Credit to Jaz

As someone who isn't that familiar with IZONE, or even Yena (my friend was a huge fan of the group and mentioned she was debuting as soloist, so I went to check it out), I actually felt that I perfectly understood who she is by the video alone. Being honest, happy/fresh concepts are hard to do. You can make a serious/cold face easily, whereas smiling in a natural way is very hard unless it's common to you. I felt like she really wanted to make people smile and was VERY charismatic, almost felt like a mahou shoujo character, usually the friend that helps bring everyone's mood up. So knowing now that she's like this irl made me like the song even more :)
Also, SAME REACTION to BIBI's part. I fell in love with the concept right then and there.

to begin with, i will say: i have always loved yena very much, she was my bias in izone.
i was in a difficult psychological situation for 1,5 years and my mind was really destroyed. i almost all 1,5 years was in a depressed, HORRIBLE state. and in january 2022, finally, I'M DONE WITH THAT situation. ofc, i may still feel less than perfect, i don't feel really great happiness, i'm just starting to get into it. and yena's debut... ok, i'll start by that i'm listening to this song 158 times in 4 days and will continue to do so. it's just an EXPLOSION. emotions, lyrics, BIBI, mv... that's what i need. this is exactly what I need at this time. and gosh, even without that it's GREAT. really great. and this line like i'm leaving WITH MY SMILEY FACE... THIS IS ALREADY IN MY HEART I WILL GO WITH EVERYTHING WITH MY SMILEY FACE... amazing. thank you choi yena for saving the universe (again)

What an excellent point about the Younha vibes, circa early 2010s! I was trying to figure out what this pop rock vibe reminded me of, and for me it was IU's "있잖아 (Rock Ver.)" from that time too! I'm glad I caught a taste of this on social media, because I don't really pay attention to the competition project groups like IZ*ONE or I.O.I , so I had no idea who Yena was. But this was SO refreshing. Soloists are really killing this first month of 2022!

Nah, I came upon the live performance of this song, not being really familiar with iz*one (I mean they're everything, but I've never put the faces to the names), so I didn't know she was from the group, but her charisma was just so captivating, you can just feel that she's pulling this concept off because it's so natural to her. Like, I didn't expect this, but I'm living, this is such a bop

I'm glad to see Yena back at singing again! She was always a decent singer and in terms of kpop singers she's actually pretty good. I remember seeing how when they prepared for La Vie En Rose she didn't want to be a rapper cuz she said she was a vocalist 😭 honestly just glad to see her do mostly singing and having BIBI there to rap.
