I feel like the part where she says she'll let her guard down once/let herself get destroyed once is really symbolic of the first relationship we're shown. It's like she's saying she'll let herself fall in love just once, even though she knows what's going to happen to him, and that's why we see her trying to take care of him and then chasing after the ambulance. It was like he was her "just once" while all the others just kinda happened.

in the teaser realsed for the mv it is said that she's a timeless/undying creature, so we can cofirm that. i think the story isn't presented linearly in purpose to confuse us because it only took me now after seeing this mv like over 10 times to realize she seems to be only speaking about one prevous lover, i really needed the context added by a more literal korean translation! i think what she really means by "i'll only let my guard down once" / "i'll only let myself be destroyed once" that she only truly fell in love with one of the men in the video, specifically the first one we see. he is the only one she actually cares for when he starts feeling ill and seems genunely distraught when she runs after the ambulance when he's taken away, plus he's the one we spend the most time with in the mv. i think she's aware of what will happen to them, even did it on purpose to some of them because of some seem to be one-night stands & complete strangers, so maybe that's also why she's speaking informally. they don't really know her at all, but they find her beautiful & alluring becuase she's probably not even human. she does seem to care for them tho -- to some extent. or maybe she's just keeping the memorabilia as a kill-count.
this whole concept and come back have been so fascinating to me! sunmi is so eloquent in portraying a story thru the visual & auditory mediums she has available & her use of language is so interesting too. she pretty fluent in english so it's safe to assume the translations are exactly what she wanted them or as close as it can get to get the story thru. this isn't the only time she's done it either!

At least twice there's a close up of her eye and I think you can see the markings of a Black Widow spider in it. Which makes sense, killing your mate after/during....mating.....

@@BeMyArt No, but he was one of the last ones, right? Only the guy in Tokyo was after that, and you see that she seems to be the least emotionally distraught about his death. I think these other men who loved her were only men that she kind of cared about, but when she finally truly fell in love with the guy in Los Angeles, the fact that she killed him by being in love with him made her darken her heart/more bitter

    • @twoohoot

She is really underated in being an artist, not just an Idol, she knows how to bend and twist the meaning of her lyrics in Korean specially, so that the casual listener doesn't clock her, but for those who are paying close attention she is saying a lot about being a woman in a very misogynistic society, being a feminist and being her.
She goes under the radar. Because she does exactly what this MV portrays, she allures people with her idol image, sound and dance... That they are not even paying attention to what she is saying as an artist.

The second line of chorus is actually bit different! "약이 올라요"(yak-i-olayo) not "열이올라요"(yeol -i -olayo). 약이올라요 means the feeling of being upset by someone teasing or making fun of you usually. But 약(yak) could mean medicine too. So it could also mean the medicine is coming up. Which could make it double meaning as sunmi's specialty when she is writing lyrics.

the teasers say that she basically is so beautiful that any man who sees her falls in love and dies, and she's immortal. so that's what is happening here. she keeps killing those she loves.

i think Sunmi definitely wanted us to be wondering all these things, like is it on purpose or is she really sad about it & so on... i feel like there are very deliberately NO solid answers in the MV, we're just meant to have fun wondering! (and watching her destroy men UwU always delightful imo)

  • @ot7biasedmashups
    @ot7biasedmashups ปีที่แล้ว +38

I think Sunmi doesn’t do it voluntarily. She probably has to do it in order to survive but really hates it. And in the lyrics she talks about only letting her guard down once which is the first guy. She’s been doing this for ages but never fell in love. It of course ended like always and it broke her heart until she stopped crying and just looked empty inside. She accepted that no matter what, she’ll always have to live like this. I think it’s interesting that she sings formally and the entire choreography is very modest too. She basically barely does anything to seduce her victims but they always come to her anyway.
And when you watch it you get what I mean but at one point a dancer comes up to her acting as another victim basically and she immediately switches to seduction mode with a sweet smile but when he’s gone her face goes blank again. In the mv she’s also smiling a lot and it looks very genuine but I think she can’t really control it. It’s like when you’re starving you won’t be able to resist eating if somebody gives you food.

The double meanings in Heartburn’s lyrics that are reflected in the English translations are also reflected in Sunmi’s dance practice. Sunmi’s expressions throughout it are calm and innocent, but the moves range from calm to sexual. The creative layers to this summer song that is cool and breezy on the surface are impressive

I actually think this is a case where if you don’t speak Korean you just can’t grasp the full concept with all the play in language so, maybe for her it was better to write some original lyrics in English that could possibly tell a slightly different version if that makes sense?

i could sit here and watch you dissect the filmmaking all damn day (and i always learn SO much from you), but then it's elevated when you share all the cultural nuances to it, like how her using formal language is weird for a song and how that affects the rest of the presentation of the song/mv/album. i used to study history, so i thought it was simply an alternate history situation (esp since my first thought of her being in 1966 LA was general racism and uhh the vietnam war). but finding out the cultural context just adds so much and i understand it all better now. thank you, pd!!

if we interpret the story of some undying beautiful creature who continuously leads men to their deaths, it could represent an undying and everlasting craving for true love, yet this craving's host knows she can't achieve such love - maybe just this one time, as this song focuses on one experience yet alludes to sunmi having experienced something alike once before.
her past experiences are shown in the music video; short flings, less serious ones and longer, more serious ones - and of many different kinds. as things become serious, as the heat rises, her partners leave her - this is where their deaths could mean they don't physically leave this earth; they leave _her._ yet she still ventures on and looks for new love, the song centering her newest find. the many different men shown in the video, from different countries and ethnicities and time periods, may represent her trying every possible option to look for the one who'll stay.
the specific years she meets these partners could, and this may be a stretch, represent their mentalities. from the wild west cowboy representing a wild type, to the religious partner who seems cautious and nervous, to the one night stand in tokyo, and at last the guy she spends the most time with, the one who she seems to have found some peace with. they all leave a lasting impact on her, as she keeps memories in the form of photos of them.
i don't think this song completely centers around one of the men in the music video (representing a specific experience) - they're 'just' experiences, as she in the bridge part has the many photos of them, where she prays and wishes for something different. a wish for the new partner she sings to, one not shown here. she's made up her mind: she'll gamble and risk being abandoned in her search for true love. she expects it, actually.
that's why she sings she'll let herself be destroyed; she knows what could and will possibly happen, she expects something of the past in the new relationship, which is that she'll be left once again. the bridge (from the english translations) suggest that she knows the end is near, so let this moment, this burning night be meaningful, before it cools off and ends; thereby the newfound love leaving her.
this heat she's speaking of could be an infatuation, an interest from both her and her partner towards one another - one not meant to last, so she pleads they both make it worth it.

When I watched the mv it was inevitable to me not to remember about Icarus' story. He flew too close to the sun and his wings melt. I feel like she's the Sun (heart BURN u know) and she lured these men close to her, when she kissed them, they died from fever (it seems like it's fever, they're sweating tho). If she's the Sun, we can understand why she's present in every era.

I really love this song. Tbh SUNMI's songs hit me in a moment, like pporappipam did in 2020, it was my favorite song i that time, with Heroine too, make me feel nostalgic and remains me my good days that i spend in 2018 and 2019.
But with Heart Burn it's different, cause i found it more beautiful and artistic, the MV really tells u a story that you can understand what is she trying to give us in the MV, the instrumental, god, is amazing i love the vibe that SUNMI give us in this song.
The story is very ambiguous and we have very questions at the end and i love that, i really really love this work that SUNMI did with Heart Burn, i hope to see more and more from SUNMI's ideas for MV and storylines

In the first and last scenes she is looking right at us --- she's letting us in on what's happening --- but watch out, she's too hot to survive! She is a flame-haired love siren with the King Midas touch for love. Although she is remorseful in killing all these men through the ages, she keeps doing it because she's naturally passionate and can't help herself. She is, oh well too bad for them it can't be helped. Except for the first man we see in the mv where she is truly sad, and actually loved him. They were doing romantic things not just lustful.

I always love your reactions, but this was was especially interesting with all the notes about the translation differences and pointing out the polite register. While I’m familiar, I definitely wouldn’t have consciously noticed it. So interesting!

Love seeing you get excited and then side-swiped by an MV, PD, especially by someone as artistic as Sunmi! Interestingly, the lyrics site I use is using Sumi's English lyrics as the translation instead of making their own...
I might add that the beat is what I call a "falling forward" beat, which is why I love it. It just keeps going and wants to keep going.

Hi PD! Could you react to aespa’s other pre release single ‘illusion’? There is no mv but there is a lyric video, dance practice and live performance! It’s completely different than life’s too short :))

13:40 The official lyrics here read "약이 올라요" instead of "열이" which... makes slightly more sense?

약 as in… medicine? 🤔 as you say it slightly makes more sense but I also don’t know how

    • @DrJarryn

@@formoftherapy Naver English Dictionary, 약오르다 - get angry[mad], be offended, take offense, get irritated, be vexed[exasperated], be stung to the quick + [I'd add] be aggrevated
I think they're going for "things are getting heated" -- temperature-wise and emotionally ... I think.

The opening along with a majority of the song remind me HEAVILY of “Tell it to my heart” by Taylor Dayne and some of “Dream” by Fleetwood Mac. I honestly don’t know what parts exactly, but my brain unlocks those songs as being extremely familiar and I LOVE it.
