If you're learning electronics off TH-cam videos there's a good chance you're not aware of how to safely handle mains voltages... and what's worse, the way it's built in the video shows a complete disregard for even the most basic safety precautions. Secondly, the version of this circuit shown is a downright dangerous design: there is no fuse, no isolation, no earthing, no enclosure and if that 1/4W carbon film resistor fails it will pass mains voltage to the output.

great video, you have earned a subscriber, I am trying to build a capacitor discharger to discharge a maximum 400v cap but i want 5 red led's to be lit when the voltage is above 200v, then, as the voltage decreases the leds go out, so the 5th goes out at 200v, the 4th at 150v, the 3rd at 100v, the 2nd at 50v and the final one to stay on until it fades out through lack of voltage. would this cct, or something similar do this? at the moment I'm looking at a divider circuit and zener diodes.

ALWAYS fully enclose all the components inside an insulated case and use great care when modifying, servicing or otherwise having direct access. Use with external LED strings is HIGHLY inadvisable ... Use a fully isolated supply instead ... A switched mode constant current supply found inside mains LED bulbs is a FAR safer option. 🤔🙄

If the 220 ohm resistor is connected to the "live" side of the electrical outlet, this circuit is going to give you a nasty shock. Please don't spread false information which can be dangerous for experimenters.
Learning purpose is ok if you use it on a regular basis, then not useful. After some time, the capacitor and resistor both lose value of current, then the first resistor defuse, then the capacitor blasts. Many times I try this type of circuit for LED series lights, and every time the same issue comes out. Not useful for long 1 or 2 hours

And you should never drop high voltage across a single carbon 1/4 watt resistor. Use at least one in series per hundres volts.

Xc=1/(2*pi*50*1*10^-6) = 3.184 ohm
Max current: (220-0.7*2)/(3184+220+330)= 58 mA rms

This circuit supplied with 120vac is only outputting 8vdc while I need close to 36-38vdc to properly illuminate my 4' led shop light. Any ideas?
