The U.S. Freestyle Wrestling Team was evaluated while in preparation for the 1997 World Championships.
Athletes were tested on 6 physiological parameters:
1. upper-body muscular power and endurance (5.6-m rope climb, RC,
2. and 5-stage modified Wingate);
3. body composition (BF%, skinfold measures);
4. lower-body muscular power (vertical jump, VJ);
5. upper-body power and anaerobic capacity (5-stage modified Wingate protocol);
6. peak aerobic power (peak Vo2) using the treadmill or cycle ergometer;
7. and lower back/hamstring flexibility (sit and reach).
8. Blood lactate (HLa) measures were taken 2 minutes after the Wingate and peak Vo2 tests.
Major results (mean +/- SD) are as follows:
RC (seconds) 9.3 +/- 4.4;
VJ (cm) 60 +/- 10;
BF% 7.6 +/- 3.4;
flexibility (cm) 3.8 +/- 5.8.
Mean peak Vo2, HLa, and heart rate results from the treadmill test were 54.6 +/- 2.0 ml[middle dot]kg-1[middle dot]min-1, 15.1 +/- 3.5 mmol[middle dot]L-1, and 186 +/- 7.0 b[middle dot]min-1, respectively.
Mean peak Vo2, HLa, and heart rate results from the cycle ergometer test were 41.2 +/- 6.1 ml[middle dot]kg-1[middle dot]min-1, 10.6 +/- 0.2 mmol[middle dot]L-1, and 176 +/- 1.0 b[middle dot]min-1, respectively.
For repetitions 1-5 of the upper-body Wingate test, peak power averaged 6.3, 4.7, 3.8, 3.5, and 3.5 W[middle dot]kg body weight-1, respectively.
The fatigue indices for efforts 1-5 were 35.0, 33.2, 30.9, 29.4, and 31.6%, respectively.
These results may provide a profile of elite freestyle wrestlers that can be used as training targets for developing athletes. The results may also provide information for training and tactical emphases. (C) 2000 National Strength and Conditioning Association

Predictor Variables for success in college wrestling
Results showed only one independent variable correlated significantly with dependent variable (wins). Additionally 70.2% of the influence in changed body mass predicated success in wrestling.
Researchers suggest that Wingate power is a strong determinant of wrestlers’ success and that lean body mass may contribute to the wrestling success (García- Pallarés et al., 2011).

Lots of work put in this vid, dope asf
thanks, best of luck to you in wrestling
I wrestle 125 in D3 college and i will say wrestlers lift technique from my school is very sloppy so their true max for things like squat would be lower. Also our team was top 15 in the nation last year so we are not some sucky team that does this it just goes to show that wrestlers max lifts may be slightly exaggerated but they are ofc very very fit 😂
Also not trying to hate on the vid it was awesome just trying to give some foresight into my experience as an example 🫡
If the weight goes up and down through the appropriate range of motion, that’s a lift that counts. VERY often in a max lift attempt, form breaks down.
I'm sure you can make up for strength or V02 max with amazing technical ability or intelligence or just straight up tough, but I think generally good wrestlers will have high strength and V02 max.
Cool video! I was honestly quite underwhelmed by some of the numbers but that would just go to show how good their technique is
Maybe that’s why there was only 1 gold in 97
Awesome video thank you
It’s crazy I somehow can’t go above 7 pull ups
Super interesting. Thanks
My pleasure
Great video
Thanks!
