The Partition of India 76yrs ago, ripped United India into 2 nations based on religious identity. What caused the partition? - Who's to blame? - Who fanned the fires? While there is a lot of debate over those questions - one thing is clear ... hate took a devastating toll in 1947 and more than seven decades later - similar mistakes are being made.
A day before Independence Day - on 14th of August - India has started commemorating #partitionhorrorsremembranceday .... On deshbhakt we take a deep drive into how India was split - how hate was fanned, who profited from it and why we must remember and learn from the mistakes made more than 7 decades ago.

My grandparents were from Gujranwala (currently in Pakistan). Their story of partition was eye-opening. My grandmother had dementia towards the end of her life, she would forget everyone's name. But, if you ask about her journey during the partition, she would tell you every single detail. She remembered what she cooked that day, how the events unfolded, every village they stopped and found refuge. What happened during partition was a nightmare and I do not wish that upon anyone or any nation. I hope that time proves us wrong and unity prevails.

As a Pakistani I truly believe that partition was completely avoidable if people of that time learn to live with peace with each other. So many innocent lives lost, million displaced just because they cannot live and accept each other with open heart. That hatred is still fueled for political gains on both sides of the border. That hate and "khatra" factor is still used to justify violence, and hide our own flaws.

I am proud of my ancestors who didn't travel to Pakistan and kept faith in their motherland and brotherin in pressing situations. Otherwise nobody thought about it before. Everyone was happy with congress. Khilafat movements by product was consolation of Muslim identity as they misunderstood it as Caliphate movement. It's disheartening to witness the resurgence of hate in India, as history has shown us the devastating consequences of such division. The diversity that has been India's strength is now being threatened by divisive narratives and animosity. Examples like the communal tensions that have flared up in various regions and the spread of hate speech through social media platforms underscore the urgency of addressing this issue. We must strive for unity, mutual respect, and open dialogue to ensure that hate does not tear apart the rich tapestry of our nation once again.

In analyzing the question of whether hate could potentially divide India once more, it's crucial to reflect on the nation's complex history, cultural diversity, and ongoing social dynamics. India's past has witnessed instances where communal tensions and divisive ideologies have led to tragic consequences. The scars of partition and communal violence still resonate, reminding us of the devastating impact of hatred. However, India's strength lies in its rich tapestry of languages, religions, and traditions, which have coexisted for centuries.
To address the concern of hate tearing India apart, it's paramount for individuals and society as a whole to prioritize unity, understanding, and tolerance. Meaningful dialogues, education that promotes inclusivity, and promoting cultural exchanges can all contribute to fostering a more harmonious society. By learning from history and acknowledging the mistakes of the past, India can strive towards a future where unity prevails over division.
Let's remember that hate can indeed be a destructive force, but with the collective efforts of its people, India has the potential to rise above it and continue its journey towards progress and prosperity.

@@shreeyanksinghvi7748 I am not going to contradict the argument that fanaticism is a significant issue for Islam. If you read the quotation from Mahatma Gandhi, it becomes evident that he was not unaware of these problems. But we will only end up creating an unending conflict by mimicking the errors of others. In all the riots you mentioned, even if a particular group of people had initiated them, innocents on both sides suffered terribly. Muslims such as Raskhan or Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan did not care about the sections of the Qur'an that asks for harming non-believers. If Christians can move away from the idea of stoning people (which is mentioned in the Old Testament) and Hindus can reject a dogmatic interpretation of the caste system, then we don't have to be too pessimistic about progress. Yes, let's not needlessly whitewash history, but we have to realise that Mahatma Gandhi was not living in a normal situation. He had the burden of challenging the world's greatest empire whilst also attempting to awaken the national consciousness and reinforcing (and forming) unity.
Also in the 1964 Calcutta riots, Muslims were the primary targets. You could say that it was in reaction to atrocities that had been committed elsewhere, but does that justify making those suffer who had nothing to do with what had been done by those people?

@@shreeyanksinghvi7748 The following article has some insightful statistics:
'The false propaganda about minority persecution in Bangladesh'
      -The Daily Star
We don't have to accept everything they are saying, but it is worth noting that the decline from 23% to 14% had occurred when Bangladesh was being ruled by Pakistan. The Pakistani state, as you would be aware, was biased against the Bengali population and was suspicious of the Hindus. To add to this, the migrations that had begun when the partition happened continued in the 50s, which is probably one of the reasons why a drop in the percentage can be seen. Another relevant point would be that many Muslims from Bihar and other areas had also begun shifting to Bangladesh. Finally, differences in fertility rates (which have now started to narrow) also came into the mix.
The article, by Ms Zyma Islam, does acknowledge the persecution faced by the minorities there:
"Having said this, discrimination against minority communities is a reality, and one would be accused of being in denial if one doesn't acknowledge that. The discrimination ranges from the kind of access members of this community get to power structures, to how they are religiously profiled in everyday circumstances like renting a house."
I think that we should not reduce everything to one aspect. Above all, the nuances that we can spot in some situations should not magically disappear in another.

Great episode as usual bro. Savarkar was not the first proponent of Two Nation Theory. It was first written by founder of AMU in his book in late 1880s. Savarkar and obviously Jinnah definitely encouraged it since 1920s though.
One poor aspect of teaching Indian history in schools though is that these factors leading to the partition, it's ill-conceived nature and the large scale violence are not given due importance. Teaching about partition in the right way can actually condition kids to think in the correct direction & preventing them from falling prey to communal forces (atleast some of them).
As for Muslims in India today, everyone who lived in India after 1947 are citizens of India and have equal rights as everyone else. If they commit crimes, punish them in due accordance with the law, and not bulldozer, which has unfortunately bulldozed the constitution itself (alongwith some other draconian policies) and turned India into a fascist country.

In recent times, there has been a concerning rise in hate-driven incidents within India, fueling fears of potential societal division. This surge in hatred is reminiscent of historical events, like the partition of India in 1947, which resulted in the tragic separation of India and Pakistan. This raises the alarming question of whether hate has the potential to tear India apart once again.
The growing hate in India is evident in various forms. Communal tensions, religious conflicts, and divisive political narratives have contributed to the polarization of society. Instances of hate speech, discrimination, and violence targeting minority communities highlight the deep-seated prejudices that persist. For example, the communal riots in Delhi in 2020, which resulted in loss of lives and property, underscored the dangerous consequences of unchecked hatred.
Social media, while providing a platform for expression, has also become a breeding ground for hate speech and misinformation. False narratives, sensationalized news, and derogatory content spread rapidly, exacerbating existing divisions and sowing discord. The spread of hate through digital channels was evident during the controversy surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), where misinformation fueled protests and counter-protests across the country.
Furthermore, economic disparities, caste-based discrimination, and regional tensions also contribute to the potential for societal rifts. The inequalities that persist in India, both in terms of wealth distribution and access to opportunities, can stoke resentment and mistrust among different segments of the population.
In order to prevent hate from tearing India apart, it is imperative for the government, civil society, and citizens to collectively address this issue. Implementing strict measures against hate speech, promoting interfaith dialogue, and fostering a culture of tolerance and inclusivity are crucial steps. Additionally, education that emphasizes the importance of diversity and understanding can help counter the divisive narratives that fuel hate.
In conclusion, the growing hate in India indeed raises concerns about the possibility of history repeating itself. The examples of communal tensions, divisive rhetoric, and the misuse of technology underscore the urgency of addressing this issue. By taking proactive measures to curb hate and promote unity, India can safeguard its social fabric and prevent the tragic consequences that can arise from division.
