  • This video explains a Marxist view on crime and deviance. It will benefit A Level Sociology students and above.
The Marxist explanation for crime and deviance focuses on the way the capitalist system breeds (creates) crime and the way the ruling class use their power to avoid being caught or prosecuted for committing Corporate crimes.
This video covers the following Marxist explanations for crime.
    1. Laws/legal systems are made by the ruling class (bourgeoisie) to benefit them
    2. Crimes of the bourgeoisie costs more/cause more harm to society than street crime
    3. Law enforcement is selective i.e. the police target street crime and the working classes whilst ignoring white collar crime/crimes of the bourgeoisie
    4. Capitalism is crimogenic i.e. it causes crime

Cheers Wesley! I do aim for a bit of objectivity. You know how left wing sociology can be.

We have to look at the Marxist view on a crime, I picked the James Bulger case, does this relate?

    • @thesociologytutor2449

It might be hard to link to the Bulger case because it's not directly about social class and how the bourgeoisie benefit from the criminal justice system.

@@thesociologytutor2449 thanks so much for replying, could it be used if you were looking at the boys parents? Both single mothers? Or would it just be easier to pick another case? Sorry for all the questions I'm just not getting it 😂

I don't know the question, but it sounds like it might be tricky. A crime by a big corporation that did significant damage to society but wasn't punished heavily would be easy to connect to Marxism. Highlight how the ruling class make the laws themselves therefore the laws don't punish rich companies. An oil spill might be good.

I see what you mean by about the parent angle, the media blames the working class single mums for the crime, rather than acknowledging it's extremely rare and unrelated to class. That could work as well.
