During the 70's I had a few "Go To" albums with my big honkin' stereo that all had black covers. And they were "Dark Side of the Moon" "Crime of the Century" "Aja" and "Gist of the Gemini" by Gino Vannelli. All simply brilliant. Superb.

"GONE HOLLYWOOD", the opening song from Breakfast In America i think is their most brilliant moment ever... Both musically and lyrically... that blissful echo spreading piano start, along with the haunting saxophone parts are so emotionally strong. They've been stuck in my head since 1982 when i first heard them and always giving me chills...Great band for sure!

Hey man, here's my list--like yours, I haven't got a couple of the later ones, so I'll just rank the titles I own:
    1. Crime of the Century
    2. Even in the Quietest Moments
    3. Breakfast in America
    4. Brother Where You Bound
    5. Crisis? What Crisis?
    6. Famous Last Words
    7. Indelibly Stamped
    8. Supertramp s/t
    9. Free as a Bird
*I don't own 'Some Things Never Change' and 'Slow Motion'.
I recently picked up Free as a Bird second hand on cassette, and when I listened to it front to back, I actually found it was better than I was expecting. That said, I agree about the direction on this being too synth-heavy--Roger's solo albums of the time were more akin to Supertramp, although I didn't much care for those either.
Crime of the Century as an album is one of my top twenty or so of all time. No wasted motion here, all killer. The title track remains my favourite Supertramp song, followed closely by Fool's Overture. Fantastic band! Great list, Pete--I ranked it lower but I'm glad you gave Indelibly Stamped some love. It really is a good record.

I've studied Supertramp pretty extensively and in my mind they more than any other group took over where the Beatles left off. The diversity if their sound, the themes of their songs, the stories their songs told about the society in which grew up, and about the inner working of the mind and the conscience of the individual. Someday I'll write a book on it.
    As for my ranking..
    1. Crime of the Century

“Crime of the Century” was a huge album here in Canada, when first released in late ‘74/early ‘75. I remember noticing it in the record stores, and reading about it at the time. Then after hearing “Bloody Well Right” and “Dreamer” played on the radio, I thought it was a pretty impressive work. At their best, Supertramp created thinking-man’s rock, similar lyrically to mid/late 1970s Pink Floyd... “DSOTM”, “Wish You Were Here”, and “Animals”. By the time of “The Wall”, I felt Supertramp may have influenced the Floyd, with “Another Brick in the Wall” (“School”) and the evolving new narrative style of Roger Waters. “Crisis, What Crisis?” was another strong album, and the impressive “Even in the Quietest Moments”, to my ears, had some hints of Phil Collins-era Genesis.

I pretty much agree with your rankings here. I do believe Breakfast In America is a great album but would only make it as far as #3 on my list too. My top 2 would flip flop though as I like Even in The Quietest Moments just a tad bit better than Crime of the Century. I find it a little bit more proggy than Crime and that's where I tend to levitate. Great job though!!! Keep up the great work. Much appreciated.

Loved Supertramp but never the same when Roger left. Brother Where You Bound quite good. Had enough by Free As A Bird. Quietest Moments is my favourite and once you get Paris you really don't need anything else.

Loved your video, we've got the same Top 3 but I'd put Even In Quitest Moments in the first place, but as you say that's pretty irrelevant since we are talking about 3 A++ albums from a A++ band

I dont have all of Supertramps albums but Breakfast In America to me is one of the best albums of all time. While I would agree that it is very poppy there just isnt a bad song on the album and "Child Of Vision" is such a classic song.
    1. Breakfast In America
    2. Crisis What Crisis
    3. Crime Of The Century

Pete, your top 3 are my top 3! Nothing will ever top Crime. Not a bad song on there ('worst' song for me on there is Dreamer, and even then, it's not a bad tune). Even In The Quietest..., if it were just for Fool's Overture, it would make my #2, but there's just so much other amazing songs there too! And indeed, Breakfast, again, not a bad track on there. That was my first exposure to the Tramp (my sister had the album), but a friend I met in high school absolutely adored Supertramp, and so it went with the other albums - Crime took me one listen, and it was tops!

I'm glad you did reviews of the earlier and later album releases. I host radio shows, hoping to do a Supertramp one, and it was helpful to know that there are a few songs on the 'off' albums that are worth adding to my playlist. I'll be listening to the ones you mentioned. Thanks a lot. 'Crime of the Century' is my number one favorite and 'Breakfast in America' is my second choice. I adore 'Even in the Quietest Moments' and 'Crisis, what Crisis', as well, so I'm not crazy about ranking them actually. I would say why, but I'd need to formulate my thoughts on that. It might take a while.

It gets overshadowed by all the hits on the Breakfast In America album, but check out Child Of Vision for pure musical bliss-hypnotic keyboard riff throughout song that makes me want to live forever and a day! Yeah, Crime Of Century and Even In The Quietest Moments are as essential as oxygen.

OK that fact that you put Even in the Quietist Moments ahead of Breakfast in America surprised me and gained a lot of (what do care?) respect from me. Your top 3 would be the top 3 for me. Great memory of seeing Supertramp on their Crime of the Century tour with Procul Harum as the opening act. Supertramp were amazing and there was a great drum solo by BJ Wilson from Procul, what a great drummer.

My top 3,not separated by much, and on most days a virtual dead heat:
1-Crime Of the Century ("School" is their absolute all time masterpeice!)
2-Even In the Quietest Moments (the title track is one of most beautiful & achingly poetic depictions of longing for (un requited) love ever recorded!)
3-Breakfast In America ("Hollywood" is perhaps one of their most underrated songs!)

Totally Agree with Crime of the Century as Number One. I remember hearing it in 1975 as an 18 year old in My last year of School and being blown away that every song struck a chord with Me and got He through some tough times.

"Eye of the Storm" sound more Supertramp than much of later Supertramp. "Open that door" also is great. "Crisis, what crisis " is the second best. I sincerelly just can't undestrand the problem with it. It´s great from start to end.
