Thanks for all great video's. I made a similar job on a type 1 1964 with roof window for over 30 year's ago. Transform it to a "California looker" a fun project but I hate to change the rusty vent channels. Regards Mike 👍

I loved all the videos and have learned a lot about restoring my VW which is a 1972 Marathon Super Beetle. Since the 71 and 72 are identical it has made life a lot easier for me. I have my engine complete sitting in my garage ready to install. The body is rust-free now and ready to go to the painter within the next week or so once he gets finished with a current project. Then it comes back to me to be finished, wiring, disc brakes, front end upgraded, interior installed, etc and engine reinstalled!

Like the air scoop a lot, probably helps with stability, along with the bonnet internal cross braces. Would have enjoyed a little chrome to break up the overall blue look and kept wheels vintage, but other than that I love it. Have been watching the '71 series while I restore my '72 super. Thanks a bunch, glad it turned out so well.

Thanks Nathriel, my wife agrees with you, except for the air damn. We went for a more modern (Eiro or German Look) with the car. Before I even brought the car home, I bought the front air dam which kind of takes any bit of vintage out of the car in my opinion.

I have a 71 Super beetle that I am finishing up restoring and I am thinking about changing the stock wheel to something more modern(since that was the last year of that horn ring VW wheel and it looks more 60's than 70's.) I found a wheel I like and the black Volante Boss but I didn't know if I needed any other parts before I pull off the old wheel. Thanks for your time.

Sam, the first set of rims you show, what size where they and what size tire? I'm struggling on deciding on a tire to buy and if I'm going to lower mine or not. I have stock rims now but I need tires. I don't like the look of the 165/80/r15 size tire. They are to talk and skinny for my taste but from all my researching the widest a stock rim will only take up to 185's on 4.5 rims. Do you know if 185 will work on stock rims lowered and or not lowered? Looking at gearing ratios and tire sizes too, how much does a shorter/wider tire effect the stock power. Another problem i have, is I can't find a 42 group size battery around me, do you know what other sizes might work?

The first set of wheels were 914 or 2.0 Liter wheels - www.jbugs.com/product/9681-4.html. A tire shop is your best bet when it comes to tire fitment advice. Shorter tires will raise your gear ratio meaning the car will accelerate a bit quicker but have a slower top speed. Additionally your speedometer (which probably doesn't read correctly due to age) will read differently as well. Don't worry about the "group size" of the battery. Head to your local auto parts store and tell them you want a battery for your (whatever year) Beetle. Most any auto parts store worth going to will be able to grab one for you.

    • @Sam_Mebane

It is a 1971 Super Beetle which has the same windshield and tail lights as the 71 Standard Beetle. The 1971 US only tail lights were only offered in red/red/white originally. Super Beetles didn't have a curved windshield and a "gauge pod" until 1973.
