    Hey I'm an American who has been living in Asia for two years now, South Korea and Vietnam. If you have any pointers on how to move or find a job in Australia I would love to know. It is my dream.

    • @CarsonMcRae
      @CarsonMcRae  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I'm sure you know this part but obviously the visa is the most important part (especially ones that give you a decent amount of work hours because employers like more flexibility). Australia can be strict on giving out working visas, so I know several of the people I worked with that were from other countries also enrolled themselves in school since you get to work on that visa. That is also what I was on (Subclass 500, but you can only work 40 hours a fortnight on it). You obviously don't have to do this though, there are others available it just makes it a little easier. In terms of finding a job... I worked for my company in America so they transferred me over, sp I didn't exactly have to job hunt. I know it's fairly easy to get jobs at hostels and bars, but if you are looking for something else I'm not sure how much more help I could be.

    • @AcousticDolph
      @AcousticDolph 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Carson McRae I appreciate the reply Carson. I’ll definitely look into it. If you dont mind me asking, what state did you come from? I’m from Arizona and I hear the weather in AU can be quite similar.

    • @CarsonMcRae
      @CarsonMcRae  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@AcousticDolph I'm from Tennessee. I've never personally been to Arizona, but from what I know about the weather there, I would tend to agree with you. When I got here in the winter it was not as cold as I am used to dealing with (Tennesse is usually around 30F or warmer during the winter). And during the summer it seems to be slightly warmer than Tennessee (Around 85-90F avg. in TN) as well, but it also depends on the day. It can get extremely hot here though, and I believe Arizona does as well?
      One slightly annoying thing that comes with the weather in AU is maintaining a comfortable temperature inside. Heating and air conditioning aren't as widespread as it is in the States. My apartment, for instance, did not have either and it was particularly annoying during the winter. A space heater and/or fan can solve this though... or just living somewhere that has them to begin with haha.
      Feel free to ask anything else if you need anything!

      After applying and getting your visa. finding work here is easy as, just go out and ask. be keen and just go in confident, being relaxed and friendly is what Australia is all about. if you want to travel as much as possible, I would recommend the seasonal fruit or veg picking. we make everything here from wine to scallops, there is so much to do here

    If you're still in Australia with the whole pandemic going on, there is a whole slew of international food that you really should try while you're there - if you're picky and eating McDonalds, it sounds like the bar to beat is more around familiarity as opposed to how good the food is. There are some amazing brunch places just to the east of Central.
    Also, try the coffee if you haven't already done so. Google to find the best places :)

    • @CarsonMcRae
      @CarsonMcRae  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the suggestions! And don’t worry, I had my fair share of new foods. Work days just happen to be a really bad day for food because I’m rushing around the whole day. I had planned on getting some actual food after work but I waited too late and everything was closed. For lunch that day I did have some Thai food but I don’t believe I ended up showing it in this video because I couldn’t find a good place to include it. But honestly cost was a slight factor because food in Australia tends to be a lot more expensive for less of it. And I wish I was a coffee drinker because everyone tells me Australian coffee is so good!

      We have a thing called portion control and nutrition. Not like America where you pay little for a lot of food that are usually unhealthy. Quality of food is also better here.

    • @CarsonMcRae
      @CarsonMcRae  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darlon Sadettan-Six while that may be partially true, even food from the store was more expensive for less of it. Bacon, for example, is something I’d buy and eat with breakfast almost every day in America. In Australia it wasn’t even worth it for me to buy because it was more expensive for less of it (and I personally eat Turkey bacon so there isn’t as much grease). I thought the food was good, but aside from less fast food options it really wasn’t miles healthier

      Peter Breis you realize an egg McMuffin is egg ham and bread right? It’s not exactly the best meal in the world but not unhealthy. Just because I was rushed to record and also get food does not mean I have “elementary life skills.”

      @@CarsonMcRae Hey Carson. Just saw your video and comment. I appreciate you sharing your experiences with Australia. I recently been working on immigration to the country and I'm from US.
      I want to find better opportunities with work and life balance + lifestyle and Australia exceeds my expectations a lot. Been in US my whole life and I'm Hispanic with family here.
      I can't take America anymore and the work life balance and just system in US isn't for me. Especially after the pandemic. I'm wasting time in America and I'm better off elsewhere.
      I have my Associates Degree and I was working before the pandemic and lost a job offer. I really want to try something new and better lifestyle. America just isn't it with all the bad things happening right after COVID.
      I spoke to someone from Department of Affairs with the process and I'm 28. Is it too late for me to still immigrate to Australia? I know friends that moved to Japan and other countries, they're better off.
      Your advice and insight would be greatly appreciated. Just need a new start and opportunity. Gave America too many chances.

Do y’all have any recommendations? Genuinely asking. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. I’ve between Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. • @CarsonMcRae
      @CarsonMcRae  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Universe Cranberry I personally prefer Sydney over Melbourne but I can’t speak to Brisbane. Rent is going to be the most expensive thing you have to deal with and it’s pretty steep in most places. I’m not sure what food is like where you live, but comparing it to American prices it’s slightly more expensive. However, even though it’s only slightly more expensive there is less of it. It’s good for staying healthy but I never felt super full unless I ate more than their typical servings in some cases. While it sounds cheap (only a few AUD) per ride, I ended up spending about 400 AUD a month on public transportation. Which is a lot more than I was expecting. However, I think if you are a resident you can get a different card that lets you pay less, and there may have been bundles to make it a little less, but I paid per ride. My phone bill is something I found to be a lot less expensive though, but the service there is not as good

      His typical work day has two bus trips and two train trips. On Sundays there is a cap of $2.80 (or was then) so you can take as many trips on any form of public transport as you like (rail, bus, ferry, tram) and it will not exceed that amount. For example he took the train to Bondi and back and it would have been effectively free because he had already paid the capped amount getting to work.

    $80 for transit fares!? Per month? It wasn’t clear. I think there’s a reduced student fare.
    Sydney is famous for incredible food so eating at MacDonalds is just ...... sad! Egg McMuffin is the same as eating a couple of spoonfuls of fat with a dose of salt and sugar. Plus all the food additives for free! So many other healthier, tastier choices! And surely eating at home can’t be all that difficult especially for breakfast. You might consider muesli - totally different from the “muesli” in the US which resembles chaff even a horse wouldn’t eat. And no cooking required and so healthful! I know you’re on a tight budget but pizza isn’t exactly economical. And again, all the fat and salt (and probably MSG) you don’t need. You shoulda/coulda have had incredible Chinese food for the same price or less in Chatswood before getting on the train! There’s so much in Chatswood, it’s really a whole other city.
    And Bondi Beach! Yeah, it’s on the east coast mate, so no sunset. But still, depending on the weather it can be pretty stunning during sunsets, even on stormy days. The colors of the sea and cloud formations can be quite dramatic.
    Restaurants are more pricey at Bondi Beach. You have more economic choices at Bondi Junction on your way home. Walk around, there are tons of restaurants to choose from.
    I live in both the US and Australia and know that there’s a lot in common but the differences are still pretty striking. One of the most obvious difference is our attitude towards food. Americans have the unfortunate problem of being sold on a lot of processed cheap food. The consequence being that it’s become a health crisis and the loss of an educated palate. Australia has an abundance of really great food. But admittedly it’s not cheap. However it’s the price of staying healthy. Woefully many Australians have become Americanized in their food habits with the prevalence of fast food restaurants and processed foods at the supermarkets.
    Well, I hope you’ll have a fuller and richer experience with food while you’re in Australia. Leave the pizzas and Big Macs for when you get home.
    BTW, University of NSW was my alma mater. The food at the Students Union wasn’t too bad nor too expensive when I was there. But I usually ate at the cheap restaurants in Randwick, Kingsford or Kensington. They cater to students.
    Hope you’re not offended by my comments. You’re in one of the greatest food cities in the world and I didn’t want you to miss out while on your adventure in Australia. Try the fruits, especially the seasonal stuff. You’ll be amazed! You’ll never look at fruits the same again! Check out the outer suburbs for food as well, not just Sydney. Honestly, it’s really hard to have a bad meal in Sydney. Good luck. And good eating!

      Super cool hearing you mention all the places I’m familiar with! And if it makes you feel any better, I had Thai food for lunch I just didn’t show it. It’s actually surprised me quite a bit how much of a takeaway what I ate was in this video (everyone’s mentioned it lol) and I’ve addressed it a few times. But one thing I haven’t mentioned is that food isn’t that important to me. A lot of people seem to be a huge food enthusiast and that just isn’t me. I’m someone who could, if it were possible, never have to eat or taste a thing again and I’d be content. I literally only showed what I was eating because it was part of my day but if I had known people cared so much I would have made an effort to eat at some of my favorite places and show it (but again it’s just not something important to me). This was my first time doing an actual vlog and I had to record stuff like 5 times each because I was nervous so the last thing on my mind while trying to make it everywhere on time was the food.

      I completely agree. My lunch wasn't pictured but I did have Thai chicken and fried rice with broccoli if that makes up for the crap I had in the video. I was too busy focusing on making sure I had every shot to actually plan out food, and the original plan was to cook when I got home but I was just too tired.

      @@CarsonMcRae I'm 1/2 Norwegian and started speaking Norske before English living there. Today Norwegians will say about the same thing. With me, I have a significant hearing loss from serving in the US Navy. Americans don't like me but in Australia, their accent and my not being an Australian will probably help me. Some parts of Australia are similar to Florida because it's tropical. Other parts (the Outback) are like the southwest, they live and breath at 45 degrees Celsius. But what I've heard is that the best part of dating an Australian woman is her Australian accent. That could be a game changer, eh mate? ;)
