As someone who doesn't know much about DIY car maintenance, this video is straight forward and easy for anyone to understand. Thanks for helping me save money!
Thank you for making this. Just hit 25,200 miles on my first ever owned 2015 Subaru Impreza. I left the dealership for just an oil change and tire rotation - they called to tell me I needed to replace the Engine Air Filter and Cabin Air Filter for a total of $90. I declined the service and am excited to do this myself. I've changed the air filter in other vehicles I've owned so it can't be that difficult in my Subaru. Can't wait to see the $$$ I'll save by doing it myself.
My dealership quoted me $90 just for the cabin filter itself, who knows how much it'll be with labor. Glad to see this video to save myself some money!!!
Simple trick for tyre rotation is just to drive the car, it saves the rubber spindles getting flat spots by varying the location on the tyre that the weight of the car is sitting
Just did this myself after the dealership recommended changing it. Save $30 and was extremely easy. My Impreza is eight years old and the filter was filthy. Thanks.
I just discovered this so thank you from a dusty dry Australia. I was just repetitive in changing the air filter but not the cabin filter. So 11 year old cabin filter just changed. It was filthy. Thanks again.
What do you mean? What might one find? I plan on putting one in mine. It's an 01 and there is a place for the filter, but they did not come stock with one in it.
Oh boy! Can't wait to see what I'll find on my 22+ year old Impreza with 206000 miles on it lol. The last time it had dealer service was when the car was 7 years old, I might make a video to show you guys what it looks like lolol.
In Albany (near San Francisco) they charge $70. Thanks to this video, I bought the genuine Subaru air filter for $22 and changed it myself. Subaru dealership was going to charge about $50 for 5 min work.
Thank you! Subaru told me my Impreza needs Engine filter being changed and Cabin filter for $39 and $87 respectively. Now I can do it by myself and save $100.
Mine doesn't have the black plastic thing around it... the set up is also slightly different from what is shown here. I have a 2017 Impreza. The filter that I just pulled out was filthy! Full of leaves and crap so I'm glad I did this. Saved myself $90 with literally 2 minutes work.
I love videos like this. This is why I really like EngineeringExplained. Always learning new things with this awesome guy!! Still so sad you sold your STI!!! Lol
I will never pay the $100+ to have this done by the mechanic ever again. I thought it was a sting and it is! I just removed mine and replaced it easily exactly as per this vid. Great directions!
I'm so glad I didn't have them change my cabin filter today when I got my oil changed. I thought $50 was kind of high and hoped I could just come to TH-cam and learn how to do it myself. I used to fuss with the choke on my first car ( when they used carburetors ), so figured if I could do that, then I can definitely change a simple filter. Thank you for this video!
I would recommend using a vacuum to clean these out 2-3 times before replacing the filter. If you start to get a musty smell some baking soda will help. Save you a couple hundred bucks. These should be from factory a washable filter but they are not.
I've been using your advice for at least 3-4 years for our cars. You have saved me a few hundred dollars and I really appreciate it. Thank you from me & my family! Be well & stay healthy my friend! -Al
Would love to see more videos on "How to change/repair/service x on your car". Doesn't have to be model spesific obviously, just give some tips on the way. Give people a general idea of what things look like, work etc.
thank you, i was trying to force the filter in without unscrewing the one screw. so, that part helped a lot with making sure i had the bottom flush in. i wasn't clear if i was having an air leak, but now i can see for sure that it's sealed. this plastic casing is super flimsy.
My honda fit and wife's corolla filters is basically the same procedure. There's difference, like there's a filter container to remove, not just slide in. but pretty easy.
a lot of newer cars especially subarus, toyotas, hondas and other japanese cars have cabin filters, some are behind the glovebox, some you have to get to from under the hood.. markup at service centers on these things can get insane considering how easy they are too replace usually
It's so wonderful to see that Beto O'Rourke found something useful to do after that catastrophic comment about taking guns away. Thanks for the informative video!
if you can see a good amount of light going through them theyre good enough but i actually wash mine anyway after a few months. they're not made of paper pulp so they dont fall apart or anything when you wet them. it works well. this way, you dont have to buy anything lol just keep an extra one on hand to put in while the other dries. same for engine air filter. perhaps eventually you wont able to get it clean enough but that will be a while. theyre not 100% pristine white like a fresh new one is even after a wash but a good 90% like new.
I bought my forester second hand and I don't think the filter was change once in 5 years. After I tried vacuuming it several times I tried washing it in a bucket with a bit of laundry detergent then rinsing with a hose and it came up as good as new.
thanks for the vid... i read up on how to change the filter and it sound complicated.... this vid made it so easy that a dumbass like me can even do it....
Does changing my Subaru’s cabin air filter and engine air filter void my warranty? I can save over half the money by doing it myself, and from the looks of this video it is pretty simple.
Literally watching this at jiffy lube while I get suckered out of 50 bucks. I'll do it next time. Females definitely should learn how to fix things on their own cars, but I'm going for convenience right now as I have enough to deal with
I have always cleaned paper filters. Dish soapy water and swoosh it around after blowing, or brushing off excess dirt. I actually buy one so I have two. One to replace the dirty one, then clean the other and leave it dry 1/2 a year until I switch.
changing the air filter on my wrx 04 was a lot harder and required tools. the filter was pretty nasty and im sure i saw some mold too. quess the previous owner didnt care about fresh air.
When you "compress" the sides of the glove box.....do it when the cabin is warm. Why do you think this is? Answer: It allows easier manipulation of the glove box...and will hinder "breaking it", due to cold plastic...that's why!
Does the filter in your hot air furnace at home get dirty? It recirculates air all the time when your furnace is running. It usually needs to be replaced once or twice a year.
I'm at a dealership and they tried to charge me $110 for the cabin filter, ALONE hahahaha no thank you. Save that price for the guys and gals that don't know what a wrench is 🔧
My question would be - How to seal up cabin air filter better to reduce the amount of time needed to change such a filter. The 2009 Forester filter is a pain to change for the engine. It doesn't seal tightly at all. to me all these gapes are bad for the engine air intake and the engine itself in my humble opinion.
Why only Subaru? Because their cars are the best and only Subarus have air filters lol... Well when I get home I'll be changing the filter on my 22+ year old Impreza for the first time and maybe make a video of it.
I'm getting ready to do this on my 2012 Impreza, but I'm pretty sure the shop changed it at 65,000 miles (currently over 140,000). I just replaced the cabin air filter on my 2013 Camaro with 130,000 miles and was mildly horrified at the state of that filter and what I had been breathing.
The manufacture recommends replacing it every 15K miles, some are 30K. Replacing it 1 to 2 times a year will insure you are getting clean air into the cab of the vehicle.
I just changed my wife's filter so I tried a couple different ones on Amazon. turns out the cheapest one had double the amount of filter than the most expensive. I think it was like $7.
I'm the only one failing at this. I needed a pliers to get my damper off, then after struggling for 5 minutes, I tried to just shut it and the damper had fallen off into the bottom of the hinged part and now I can't close my glove box or get it off. Doing this in below freezing temps is not recommended.
I'm literally sitting in the subaru dealership watching this video in front of the subaru mechanic. Thank you because you just saved me $30
It's $60 at my dealership 🙄
I absolutely refuse to bring my carsto dealerships for work unless its thelast resort. Such a ripoff
@@merritboibeaux1320 big time, had to get a recall fixed.
$30? Lol it's $151 in Australia.
$350 for a battery replacement that I bought at the costco next door for $83 :/
As someone who doesn't know much about DIY car maintenance, this video is straight forward and easy for anyone to understand. Thanks for helping me save money!
I didn't manage still, I had to take it to the dealer who charged me $93 plus taxes
Thank you for making this. Just hit 25,200 miles on my first ever owned 2015 Subaru Impreza. I left the dealership for just an oil change and tire rotation - they called to tell me I needed to replace the Engine Air Filter and Cabin Air Filter for a total of $90. yikes where was this? Jiffy Lube?
My dealership quoted me $90 just for the cabin filter itself, who knows how much it'll be with labor. Glad to see this video to save myself some money!!!
Simple trick for tyre rotation is just to drive the car, it saves the rubber spindles getting flat spots by varying the location on the tyre that the weight of the car is sitting
6 years later, and the exact same thing is happening to me! Though, they quoted me $70, but still! Crazy how they try to grift people
Subaru dealer quoted me over $100 to replace this. 5 minutes and $20 later I'm good to go. Appreciate the content.
Warning to those who are doing this for the first time on high mileage cars - You may be disturbed by what you find on that filter.
Thanks for the advanced notice. I wonder what I'm going to find later today...
Looks like my car is too old for an in cabin filter. Doh!
What do you mean? What might one find?
I plan on putting one in mine. It's an 01 and there is a place for the filter, but they did not come stock with one in it.
I've found dead baby mice
Oh boy! Can't wait to see what I'll find on my 22+ year old Impreza with 206000 miles on it lol.

Damn I just paid $40. Wish I watched this first. Won’t happen again I’ll tell ya that!
My Subaru dealership's service center wanted around $100 to replace the cabin air filter. Thank you for the video.
Thank you! Subaru told me my Impreza needs Engine filter being changed and Cabin filter for $39 and $87 respectively. Now I can do it by myself and save $100.

Took subi in for inspection - quoted 59$ to change filter - 19$ atm thru your link. Thanks a bunch for this video.
Come to Australia and feel $200 for a cabin filter change. Even allowing for exchange rates, we pay through both nostrils.
Very helpful - it gave me the extra confidence I needed to squeeze the side stops in far enough to hinge the compartment lid down! Thank you
I would recommend using a vacuum to clean these out 2-3 times before replacing the filter. If you start to get a musty smell some baking soda will help. Save you a couple hundred bucks.
These should be from factory a washable filter but they are not.
Man like bro!!! Thanks so much, props to my Canadian bros.
Thanks for the video! You saved me alot of money on my air filter! Super easy instructions to follow. I am grateful.
I've been using your advice for at least 3-4 years for our cars. You have saved me a few hundred dollars and I really appreciate it.
Thank you from me & my family!
Be well & stay healthy my friend!

Thanks, my soon-to-be ex-mechanic quoted $180 to replace the filter. I've done it many times myself. Alot for a $20 part and 3 min of work.
They quoted me 80 for the filter on my 2023 WRX. I was like, yeah, I'll do it myself, lol
Thanks for showing these practical steps for something our dealers like to charge a fortune for. (over $100 in AUD)
Damn, I didn't realize it was this simple. I've had mine for 3 years now, each time going to the dealership for maintenance on stuff like this.
I'd get a K&N Washable Cabin Air Filter. A bit expensive at first, but definitely worth it in the long run.
Would love to see more videos on "How to change/repair/service x on your car". Doesn't have to be model spesific obviously, just give some tips on the way. Give people a general idea of what things look like, work etc.
If you haven't all ready you should check out Chrisfix. He does more maintenance/repair type videos
***** Checked him out. Now subscribed. Thanks alot :)
+1 for ChrisFix, he is awesome. Eric The Car Guy is awesome too, and of course, Mighty Car Mods, but they get into more so modification type stuff.
thank you, i was trying to force the filter in without unscrewing the one screw. so, that part helped a lot with making sure i had the bottom flush in. i wasn't clear if i was having an air leak, but now i can see for sure that it's sealed. this plastic casing is super flimsy.

Thank you very much for the demonstration. 100% success with your help 🖤
It's so wonderful to see that Beto O'Rourke found something useful to do after that catastrophic comment about taking guns away. Thanks for the informative video!

Thank you for the concise instructions! Great job and I will subscribe!
Wow that was really simple. Why do places charge so much to replace them for you?
Jeez even though it's almost the same filter as my GC one, it is soooo much simpler :x
This advice is spot on - thank you.
My WRX will love u thanks
congrats with 800k
+tibo thank you!!
Wow so freaking easy on subaru
It's pretty easy on most cars that have one
This was a big help, thanks do much.
Excellent!! Quick and Easy! Thank you!
Good video. Short, informative, saved me $30.
LMAO my dealership was gonna charge me a ton of money for this. hilarious
thanks for the vid... i read up on how to change the filter and it sound complicated.... this vid made it so easy that a dumbass like me can even do it....
Super helpful. Thank you.
Does changing my Subaru’s cabin air filter and engine air filter void my warranty? I can save over half the money by doing it myself, and from the looks of this video it is pretty simple.
Easy peasy. Thanks for the video! Was able to follow along in real time and replace the filter with no issues. Great video!
Havent dome this in years. No wonder there's a dust issue!
Bonus points available for applicable models.
Huge help. Thanks a ton!
Literally watching this at jiffy lube while I get suckered out of 50 bucks. I'll do it next time. Females definitely should learn how to fix things on their own cars, but I'm going for convenience right now as I have enough to deal with
How do you feel about washable cabin air filters? Such as K&N's product?
Do you think the reusable cloth method works for allergens?
I have always cleaned paper filters. Dish soapy water and swoosh it around after blowing, or brushing off excess dirt. I actually buy one so I have two. One to replace the dirty one, then clean the other and leave it dry 1/2 a year until I switch.
followed the step. nailed it!!
+Peng Du nice!
Without checking the air filter, how do you know when to replace it? Doesn't the car begin to emit a weird smell when you have the air on?
They're generally pretty easy to check. Worth checking every couple of oil changes.
Engineering Explained awesome thanks!
this was very helpful
Thanks for the filter link
Right in time. I need to change my legacy cabin air filter which locates in the same place
Is it possible to replace the cabin blower right behind the cabin air filter without removing the whole dashboard in an 09 Subaru Legacy?
changing the air filter on my wrx 04 was a lot harder and required tools. the filter was pretty nasty and im sure i saw some mold too. quess the previous owner didnt care about fresh air.
a lot of cool info, really helps. thanks.
Have you fixed the centre console issue?
Most call recommend replace twice a year or 15k miles. I usually change every spring and winter.
did a cold air cabin filter , air is much cleaner and sounds louder now
This is exactly how it is in my Mitsubishi Outlander and most cars tbh
TheAymanhawk23 In my Fiesta it was behind a panel under the shifter
congrats 800k subs that came fast !!
your a clever man thank you
When you "compress" the sides of the glove box.....do it when the cabin is warm. Why do you think this is?
Answer: It allows easier manipulation of the glove box...and will hinder "breaking it", due to cold plastic...that's why!
Got my filter for $6 bucks and change. Got that Worldpac plug!
Nippon brand.
When I should change the filter?
Does the cabin air filter get dirty when i have my air recirculation always on?
Does the filter in your hot air furnace at home get dirty? It recirculates air all the time when your furnace is running. It usually needs to be replaced once or twice a year.
Chrisfix would be proud.
Is the process to the replace the filter different if the subaru is right hand drive?
It's similar on most cars
I have an impreza that is a 2011 model and is RHD.
It is the same.
mine is the newer cabin filter Denso unit off the Toyota Prius Highlander and Avalon..
my local dealership only charges $25 for it, but I install it myself to avoid any potential hourly labor fees.
I should have done this myself. I used to do that in my RSX. The dealership didn’t connect the glove box properly in my WRX 🙄
Thank you !
Thanks!
I'm at a dealership and they tried to charge me $110 for the cabin filter, ALONE hahahaha no thank you. Save that price for the guys and gals that don't know what a wrench is 🔧
you dont need a wrench

Great video!
k&n washable cabin filter
Why not get a K&N so you won't have to buying filters EE?
Thank you
Always wanted to ask, does the cabin filter filers Recycling AC air too, our only the fresh air form the out side?
Why only subaru? Like does every other car not have an cabin air filter?
Lots of older cars don't have a cabin air filter. My truck, for instance, does not.
Why only Subaru? Because their cars are the best and only Subarus have air filters lol...
Well when I get home I'll be changing the filter on my 22+ year old Impreza for the first time and maybe make a video of it.
Thanks for the video.
Subaru just tried to charge me $70 to replace rhe cabin air filter and $70 for the engine air filter. Right...
Done! Thank you!
PIECE OF CAKE. JUST LIKE YOU SAID. THANKS!
Thanks for the vid. ☺
Is it a high percentage of 2007-2009 subaru's that have leaky head gaskets in time? Whats the sccop on that.
Does this work on Subaru Legacy’s?
Will have to look it up by year because some models change the way the glove compartment is installed
After 12 years and 140K I guess I should change my filter.
I just changed my wife's filter so I tried a couple different ones on Amazon. turns out the cheapest one had double the amount of filter than the most expensive. I think it was like $7.
Probably made in China too.
Mine hasn’t been changed in about 40,000 miles. My car may smell better after this
My 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis LS was designed not to have a cabin air filter, why would that be?
Wheres the link? I have a 2013 wrx
wix at orielly's was $26. Still way cheaper than the subi shop.
In my moms Outback you just flip the glove box down and switch it out.
I'm the only one failing at this. I needed a pliers to get my damper off, then after struggling for 5 minutes, I tried to just shut it and the damper had fallen off into the bottom of the hinged part and now I can't close my glove box or get it off.
